Georgia Tech and BitPay Announce Bitcoin Integration for Stadium and Student Buz

ATLANTA, GA – OCTOBER 1, 2014 -- Georgia Institute of Technology will be the first university in the world to integrate bitcoin payments into its stadium concession sales and student dining and shopping credit system, announced Wednesday by BitPay, the world’s leading bitcoin payment processor.
 
Bitcoin point of sale devices will be located in the student section of Bobby Dodd Stadium, and the Barnes & Noble store in Tech Square will be home to a bitcoin-enabled point purchase terminal for student credit BuzzCards. Students who use bitcoin will now be able to purchase food and goods at almost all locations on the Tech campus.
 
Georgia Tech was founded in 1885 and remains one of the most prestigious public universities in the United States. The university has contributed a great deal of research as well as many notable graduates to the field of applied technology over the years. It continues to engage itself with technological progress through its leading role in university adoption of bitcoin through an innovative deal brokered by IMG, the university’s multimedia rights partner.
 
As the “key to campus life” on Georgia Tech, the BuzzCard will be an important interface for student bitcoin use. Yellow Jackets fans will also be able to easily and quickly purchase snacks and drinks at Bobby Dodd Stadium with the world’s fastest payment method. These new bitcoin venues, along with bitcoin wallet provider Pheeva’s announcement of a unique “Jacketwallet" for Georgia Tech, hold promise for the role which digital currency may come to play in student life.

Georgia Tech Alum as well...with the number a retailers around midtown, it's only a matter of time of when a choice to accept bitcoin or not is made by bars and restaurants in the area! I wonder if this was a service provider agreement to the university or a statement by Georgia Tech. If the latter, integrating bitcoin payments for world class engineering course work is a valid projection. A game changer, even.

Also, you have to wonder if this will warrant national mention this weekend with prime time coverage @ GT on ESPN2..

It's also clever that it's being applied to the Buzz Card (Student ID); this could have a positive effect by not putting MC and Visa into students hands drumming up bad student debt and cutting into the transaction fees the local businesses if they began accepting BTC. Alas, if only GT had more bodies!

I've migrated to Maryland, but I think there's some attractive options to Tech Square businesses that have margin to take a little bit of risk.

This is cool, Georgia tech is a great school and this can really help drive adoption in and around Atlanta which has a young and diverse population

If I were to pick this happening or GA tech offering classes on bitcoin (either on the technology or the economics) I would pick the classes any day. It is cool that colleges are allowing students to buy food with bitcoin however IMO it is more important to teach them how good bitcoin is (on a balanced level). Generally speaking college students do not have a lot of financial resources and therefore will not get to appreciate how efficient using bitcoin is
