We hear a lot valid criticism about bitcoin. But, often, the people speaking simply have no clue and the more stupid it sounds, the more they are convinced.

Let's keep those memorable quotes in this thread.

Here's my favorites from the OCN thread (which happened to be allowed to remain in the bitcoin discussion section):

Quote
There's really no incentive considering they are likely just going to jack all of your data and/or add your PC to a botnet. Any client you have to run with a BAT is obviously not refined to any sort of acceptable programming standard.

Quote
Even more that you don't even know what they are actually doing on your GPU.
If they have access to your GPU and your internet, what tells you that they aren't playing in your computer ?

Quote
Can we PLEASE stop talking about the motives behind bitcoin. Whatever it is, WE DON'T KNOW.

And from psy's sig:

Quote
So in other words this is a strange currency generated out of thin air by wasting electricity...

That one is true, in a relative sense.  Can a quote be stupid if it's also accurate?

"The powers of financial capitalism had another far-reaching aim, nothing less than to create a world system of financial control in private hands able to dominate the political system of each country and the economy of the world as a whole. This system was to be controlled in a feudalist fashion by the central banks of the world acting in concert, by secret agreements arrived at in frequent meetings and conferences. The apex of the systems was to be the Bank for International Settlements in Basel, Switzerland, a private bank owned and controlled by the world's central banks which were themselves private corporations. Each central bank...sought to dominate its government by its ability to control Treasury loans, to manipulate foreign exchanges, to influence the level of economic activity in the country, and to influence cooperative politicians by subsequent economic rewards in the business world."

Has anyone infos on how environmentally "friendly" it is to mint money, transport it, the whole industry around it, etc.?

Would be interessting to know when the crossover point will be between energy cost of ordinary money and bitcoin (if there is any).

The awesome thing is that bitcoins can probably always become more environmentally friendly, if need be. At our most efficient/"environmentally friendly" we would all be running noiseless machines plugged into solar panels.

Space exploration could pay for itself. At least until all bitcoins have been mined.

Still around.

Yes and no. I did forget about the possibility of providing that service, but I think its practicality will wane as its distance from us increases. Even at light speed, it will eventually be out of range. Unless you can solve the FTL problem.

Still around.

“[Bitcoin] is a remarkable cryptographic achievement… The ability to create something which is not duplicable in the digital world has enormous value…Lot’s of people will build businesses on top of that.”

E. Schmidt

This wasnt so miserable, if it was not said by Executive Chairman of Google, but a cleaning staff at airport for instance.
