The included chinese power supply went up in smoke after 2 days use. It had a 06/2015 sticker on it, lol.

If you use the stock power supply and anything other than default frequecy/voltage they will melt down.  It's been well documented in this thread. Smiley

Do you know what is the maximum power or current consumption of U3? The stock supply was marked 7.5A but it was either not enough or not true. What power supply should I get besides ATX for PC?

What happens if you cut the power wire in the USB cable? Would the reset then work without unplugging the USB?

I see a lot of negative comments about these miners...

Anybody wants to sell a used BUT WORKING one in the near future (don't sell me the one miner that always gives you troubles tough), only within the EU to avoid large shipping fees + custom fees...
ATM i don't have the BTC to buy one, but i'll have some more funds in 1-2 weeks  Grin

Also, can you just use an Arduino combined with two relays to reset both the USB and regular power every 24 hours or something like that?

Cutting power on a USB connection has the same effect as unplugging it on most USB hosts.  That's basically what this thing does: http://www.switchdoc.com/usb-powercontrol-board/
Some power delivery applications might get a little confused if they're using internal measuring between pins and don't take the power lines as overriding.

Also, can you just use an Arduino combined with two relays to reset both the USB and regular power every 24 hours or something like that?
Sure, see above for an example device for the USB side.  Toggling the 12V side of the wallwart is easy enough, or pick up a powerswitch tail type device so you can toggle the mains side (bit longer useful life if you ever get sick of the U3).

Tnx. From what I understood so far, both USB and power need to be restarted, right? Which means the power input from the USB is somehow connected to the power plug. So I was thinking cutting off USB power permanently, and have it supplied just through regular power plug. Or is it just USB power that needs to be restarted? Basically, the question is - do I need one relay or two?

Somebody who still has one laying around and knows their way around a PCB might be able to tell you with more certitude, but at least theoretically you could feed the USB end off of the wallwart completely, ground should already be shared so you'd just have to see if there's a 5V reg on the board somewhere already (I think there was only the 3.3V one) or add one in line - so just 1 if you went that route.  I still think it's more trouble than it's worth for this one, but if you like tinkering... Pretty much everyone uses ATX psu or a spare connector from their computer to power these.  I power mine with the same ATX psu that one of my S3+ uses.

Maybe, but probably not.  I think more than just USB power needs to be cut.  There's something with how the U3 is put together that it's power and usb circuitry overlap in a less than desirable way (sorry, I'm not a hardware tech, but one did explain it to me once) that lead to needing to plug/unplug to get the machine going again.

I've only ever unplugged the usb cable when they zombie. Only time I've unplugged the power, was when moving the cables and miners while tidying up some.

As for cutting the usb power in the cable permanently? Looks like a good experiment for the cheap cables that ship with them.

the CP2012 requires the 5V off the usb side, cutting the power will shutdown the chip, acting as if you pull the usb cable.
with mine that is OC'ed to 250MHz and pulling 0.8V, at the wall from my Platinum rated PSU, im pulling about 65-70W, right now i have the PSU connected to a atom based motherboard, running Spinrite on a laptop HDD, its pulling 90W.

i was wondering about the heatsink/stand for the base, has anyone modified these, strapped an extra fan to them? larger sink? im thinking of getting an old 100W videocards heatsink and bolting it to the board, i just need to drill mounting points into the heatsink..

none the less, pushing the power up (via cgminer) a little should stop it from be unstable, mine has been running non-stop for 9 days since i plugged  the PSU into a motherboard. if not, Cron job to reset cgminer? iirc cgminer has a reset usb option, so if something goes zombie it resets it..

Well, you posted that about the 5V after I went to do something else, and I figured what the hell, cut the red wire on 1 (not the good cable).

That 1 has been hashing away for about 1hr now, with the red wire cut.

I think that may be the problem with the U3's, they got the CP2012 trying to pull 5V off USB and pulling 5V from the board. Some kind of power overload of the CP2012??

Going to let it run till morning and see if it's still going. If it's still going and hashing happy, will let it go till it stops.

Ha, sorry! the CP2012's are finicky little things, i bought myself a few extras to replace blown ones (they don't like being in the middle of 2 earth levels.) so i would not be surprised that it is the 2 voltages making it spit the dummy.
oh well, if it works perfectly, i know what im doing Wink

Update: about 8 hours and still hashing with the red wire cut.  Huh

So going to let it run. Keeping fingers crossed that it keeps on without a reset from cgminer or zombie out. Seen to many posts that say try this it works, only for them to come back a day or 2 later to say it zombies out again.

Well, if it works even with the USB wire cut, that means the reset can be done programatically, without the need to unplug the USB cable, which should be some sort of an improvement, right?

As for the ground, as long as the USB uses the same ground as the rest of the device, I suppose it should work even with the black wire cut. Though if the PSU is different, it may be better to leave it to equalize the ground.

Well I've tried every other suggestion in messing around with mine, I might just have to try the "no USB power mod" and see what my results are. Seems like doing the same thing to different U3s can yield different results.

Yeah, I been trying most of them and not getting the results mentioned in posts.

That's why I'm kind of waiting for someone to say they cut the red wire and it wouldn't hash.

About 19 1/2 hrs and still going. So I think I'll cut another one of the cheap cables and see if another one will work.

How often did they get stuck before you cut the wire?

That's the problem with the U3's, no rhyme, no reason, no set time. Just when they decide to zombie they zombie.

Got 3 that I cut the red wire in the USB cable on (the cheap cables that they come with), 3 without cutting the wire (good cables), on the same PSU, and same USB hub.

Just to make it even, I rebooted the Pi around 8:30 this morning, and started over to see which ones stop first. Already had 1 of each loose connection, but they re-connected by their self (which is good).

So I'm not touching it any more until I get a zombie or the Pi stops.

The first one I cut went ~ 31 - 32 hours and hashed steady.

Anyone got this running on a mac? I installed the drivers and everything on my mac but cgminer wont pick up this miner.
