Damn, just missed the screenshot... For 3 times today I've seen the last price passing $5.25, yet it disappears and the High remains at $5.18 EDIT: Now I managed to take a screenshot If you go there now it's still $5.18 Too many glitches...

There are several different types of Bitcoin clients. The most secure are full nodes like Bitcoin Core, but full nodes are more resource-heavy, and they must do a lengthy initial syncing process. As a result, lightweight clients with somewhat less security are commonly used.

If the trade engine is making an error, they are able to reverse bad trades and delete them from the live graph, which may be what is happening.

What is considered a bad trade? And why happening so many times? At least 3 times in the last 3 or 4 hours. And I'm not looking there all the time, just once in a while. If I've spent 5 minutes in total looking at it and managed to see it 3 times I wonder how many times more it happened. Couldn't they be doing it on purpose to confuse bots and make them take unintended actions, like sell or buy just to fuck up traders that use bots?

Yes, I know it happened. And I quickly forgot about it for that same reson when I saw it the 1st time a few hours ago. But it's happening constantly, it seems.

Sorry guys, that was me. I tripped over a wire in my control console for the Bitcoin network and made the price fluctuate.

They won't acknowledge anything. And you thought PayPal was bad ... There is no transparency in Gox. Manipulation and front running is rampant.

In scrolling back at the live trade data on #bitcoin-market, I don't see any trades above the 24 hour high that shows on the site ($5.19).
So if there were any trades executed and reversed, they weren't seen by whatever method #bitcoin-market uses to get trade data. (not sure if that is using the streaming API or what.)

That "Last Price" number on the top of the home page is always very far from the Bid/Ask prices when you see when you log in. I used to think it was an error but now I think it is similar to the highs and lows on a candle stick graph.
If the last transaction executed was a market buy order then "last price" refers to the highest price paid in that batch of coins.
And if the last transaction executed was a market sell order then "last price" refers to the lowest price paid in that batch of coins.

Official reply : No manipulations and good lord we are still sane... (I'm not insane, my mother had me tested). Now for the record and as far as we are concerned, a nice stable price keeps volume and revenue low.

Here is a better reply I got directly responding to my support inquiry about this thread.
Thank you for your inquiry. Our PR manager has already responded to the thread in question. It appears that there was a glitch in our system, but the actual price did not go up that high. All the invalid trades will be cancelled. Our apologies for the inconvenience caused and thank you for your kind understanding in this matter. If you have any further questions, please feel free to contact us again.

Now for the record and as far as we are concerned, a nice stable price keeps volume and revenue low. But it didn't answer the question. Did a trade execute > $5.18? If so then why didn't the high update to reflect it? If not then why does "last" show $5.269? What EXACTLY is the "last"? Is it really the price the most recent trade executed?

Clark Moody shows value @$5.27+ on the 1st at 8PM. http://bitcoin.clarkmoody.com/widget/chart/It appears the feed is the only thing with a rising price. Don't worry, it's just a "glitch", we're sorry you noticed. They have all sorts of bugs and glitches. I converted $25 cash, in two transactions, to ⊅BTC @$5.115, I got ⊅7.25 total. Please don't reverse it or fix the glitches.
|
For Bitcoin to be a true global currency the value of BTC needs always to rise. If BTC became the global currency & money supply = 100 Trillion then ⊅1.00 BTC = $4,761,904.76. P2Pool Server List | How To's and Guides Mega List | 1 EndfedSryGUZK9sPrdvxHntYzv2EBexGA

My guess is that it's just some coding error, and not some manipulation.
I would assume that on the mtGox website, the price is updated by ajax (ie. making calls to the server in the background, which only updates the price in the browser), so there might be some kind of error in that code, if it's not coherent with API data.
A 3rd party code review and more transparency would be a good idea. A technical detailed explanation of these 'glitches' would be a good idea.
Not sure if there's anyone else but Mark actually having access to the codebase itself.
There's been too many stories lately about late payments for larger amounts when withdrawn from mtGox. This may lead us to think that mtGox has money flow problems.
A 3rd part audit in that regard may also be a good idea.
As a final thought, there's other exchanges as well, and keeping a lot of funds on mtGox, well, it will be for every individual to decide if that's a good idea.
