I noticed I had to cycle through around 6 different names before getting to this one because every single one before this was taken....most by inactive people or people who haven't even posted. When the new forum comes out will these people be deleted from db and usernames up for grabs?

It is a common myth that Bitcoin is ruled by a majority of miners. This is not true. Bitcoin miners "vote" on the ordering of transactions, but that's all they do. They can't vote to change the network rules.

Bagsy got satoshi  Grin. What/when would be the cut off of someone being inactive?  I think maybe those who never posted and have also been inactive for over a year maybe should be wiped, but not sure about just 'inactive' accounts over X amount of time.

Yeah, the "never posted" is a red line I'd say. If someone has a single post even it it's in 2010 their account should be kept. Accounts with no posts and last login >= 6 months ago could be deleted without remorse.

Would their feedback be removed as well?  There are a number of accounts that were created (no posts) just to leave me negative feedback.

I'd say so. We only have to wonder what's the point of a forum, and whether registering and not posting makes any sense. The trust system is an accesory to this forum, not its main purpose.

But you made posts and that's the crucial element. If it was just 6/12 months of inactivity then satoshi's account would be wiped plus many other once prominent members. People who have made at least 1 post should probably be kept.

All existing accounts with content will be saved. I'm not sure what should happen with accounts with no content yet.

Removing users (and their posts) who only post because of signature campaigns will also decrease the size of the database. Wink

Sure, but how do you easily determine that?  I'm sure the admins are looking for an automated solution, given the size of the user database.

Can you define "content"?

Do you mean that all accounts that have made at least one post will be saved? Would it include accounts that have sent/received at least one PM (or accounts that have sent at least one PM) will be saved? Would accounts that have done nothing but sent/received feedback (trust) be saved? What about accounts that have zero content but have been mentioned/linked to in threads?

If I am right, he meant everything such as activity, trust feedback, P. MSG, Signature etc... by "content". The account with no posts, just for PM spamming may be removed and it should be, IMO. Roll Eyes

Heh, compared to mining pools, the pruning policy here (nonexistent) is radically liberal. Slush prunes after 6 months of inactivity and gives a warning. Eclipse prunes after ? months without warning. -And they keep any coins in the account, so generally much more at stake.

Pruning no-post accounts after 6-12 months of inactivity with a warning seems pretty reasonable. It'd be a real shame if the forum started knocking off accounts like Hal's, though, but I'm sure it won't. I doubt the impact on the db is really that significant if it's not frequently being accessed, and if it is frequently being accessed, there's obviously reason to keep the account intact.

Size isn't an issue. However maybe usernames with 0 posts for a certain amount of time automatically gets deleted from the system. Big names like Twitter is guilty of not doing this. -_-

Accounts shouldn't and I'm very sure wouldn't be deleted just due to inactivity. If it did happen it would likely be inactive accounts with zero posts. I don't think getting rid of inactive accounts is such a big issue though either.

Perhaps, instead of deleting the user, we could just change the name.
For example, on another forum I am a part of, if an inactive user has a name that someone else wants, a 1 is added to the inactive person's name. This both preserves posts and allows people to have the username they want.

How long do they have to be inactive for? Makes sense for the new person to just put the 1 in front of their name. I don't like this as an idea.
