My core client which I have had up and running for the past few months now which I've got the default 100 address + 16 generated by myself. My machine currently has 4GB ram which is more than enough I think?

I boot it up and it reaches the splash logo and then goes into not responding mode. I'm in a Linux Ubuntu environment.

I'm going to try and reinstall with backing everything up once again to my USB drive.

Does the bitcoin log show anything (e.g. where it is getting hung up)?  Did you give it much time to finish? (e.g. if it was a few minutes it could have been doing the block database verify).

(debug.log is in here https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Data_directory)
