Quote
wallof (plural wallofs):

Thematic web picture composed of multiple sub-images.  Every sub-image has a link. Generally is formed by logos or diagrams with links to others webpages. And the image is usually dedicated to one thing or topic. These pics are interesting objects to learn or advertise about one thing or topic, because they provide access to information related with the thematic on their links. In most cases also they are a historical reference to the state of art at certain moment of time and they can show the evolution over time.

This concept is a powerfull advertising tool, because is based on a decentralized model. Somebody can create a "wallof" of anything. Conceptually is similar to a blog or a micro-blog, but without text, only with images... Now with new gTLDs the possibilities are infinite.

Why did you do that?

I think this is an interesting idea to create thematics websites...
For now the only sample that I have is http://www.nxt.cool, but I hope in the future there will be a lot of more...  The idea is to have decentralized and visual thematic webs.

The concept even has the posibility to use "include" to do bigger "wallofs" composed of other...

You are right, it is a new word (Protologism)...
But it was not spam, it has been an error on my side... Sorry.

I have included it on the Protologisms list:

Thanks!

Anillos2 in the spanish forums told to me this about the idea:

Quote
Is not this called "Pixel advertising"?
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Million_Dollar_Homepage

My answer was this:

Yep, it's a similar concept, in fact the initial idea of the http://www.nxt.cool site came to me from that page. But over time I have been seeing some differences, more than that, are generalizations of the concept. A "wallof" would not have to be for advertisement propose only, would be more a thematic image, and could be for ads per pixel or not. For example, I am thinking to create a "wallof" about Karatedo Shito-Ryu. That will not be to pay for pixel, my idea is make a large image with many small images about this style of martial art. So you can handle plenty of relevant links to that particular issue, in an interesting visual composition. The idea would not go about advertisement concept only, otherwise it is nearer the blog concept, but instead of using texts, it uses images... Logically also could be used for advertising, and charge for every pixel... That would be a particular case of "wallof", but not all wallofs would be on that way.

I can think on many "wallofs":

- A Diving wallof
- A Football wallof
- A Europe League wallof
- A Classical Music wallof
- A Science Fiction Film wallof
- A Film Noir wallof
- A Jurassic wallof
- A History wallof
- A DIY wallof
- A Star Wars wallof
- A Lord of the Rings wallof
- ...

They would be interesting handy webs, because on one page you would have access to a lot of information about an specific topic. Also could join several wallofs and form a larger one if people allow it, etc...

The wallofs be a kind of search engine, where searches would consist on surfing over logos or subimages. Perhaps they would be less targeted than google ones, but perhaps more enriching to learn about a particular topic, because you would go nav through different links, and after a few days of clicking on the image, you would have reviewed a lot of information about the topic, selected by an interested or expert human on the subject, and not by ice-cold search engine.

They are very easy to make: an html image map and ready. Someone can make one ... which promotes decentralization of thematic and varied "algorithms" of selection.

When I have advanced to the Shito-Ryu leave the link here...

Now with the new gTLDs would lead to creating sites with urls like these:

http://www.wallof.guitars
http://www.wallof.london

Really it is an idea that has not come to me suddenly, has been seeing http://www.nxt.cool site evolution. I have seen is very comfortable to have everything handy in one picture...

Another interesting thing is that it is an image that can grow down over time, and over the years it is becoming a kind of sediment about state of the art in relation to the subject, and one could see how it has gone qualitatively evolving in a glance... For example http://www.nxt.cool in a few years we will see that at the beginning had an attack over a site called BTER and 50,000,000 of NXT were stolen, or there was a site called NXTLegal.org, or that two music albums related to NXT were released, etc ...

I leave a sample of Shito Ryu Wallof just where I am working to illustrate the idea:

I have added new features to the NXT wallof (http://www.nxt.cool):

Now, it is possible order subimages up-down and right-left.

Here is the javascript sample to do it possible, perhaps it can be interesting for someone wants to do a wallof:

Code:
<html>
<head>
<title>Images Moving</title>
<script>
function moveY(){
  var maxY=400
  var images = document.getElementsByClassName("image");
  var i;
  for (i = 0; i < images.length; i++) {
      images[i].style.top = maxY-parseInt(images[i].style.height)-parseInt(images[i].style.top)+"px";
  }
}
</script>
</head>
<body>
  <input type="button" value="MoveY" onclick="moveY()"/> <br/>
  <div style="margin-left:auto;margin-right:auto;width:1000;height:300px;position:relative">
    Capa Principal
    <div class="image" style="position:absolute;left:0px;top:50px;height:50px;width:100px">
      Image1
    </div>
    <div class="image" style="position:absolute;left:100px;top:50px;height:50px;width:100px">
      Image2
    </div>
    <div class="image" style="position:absolute;left:0px;top:100px;height:50px;width:100px">
      Image3
    </div>
  </div>
</body>

And here a powershell script to create wallof.html from .csv file with this format in every line:

Left;Top;Width;Height;Link;Title;Imagefile

Code:
$inFile= "c:\temp\subImagesList.csv"
$OutputFile= "c:\temp\Wallof.html"

$data=Get-Content $inFile

$null | Out-file $OutputFile

foreach ($line in $data)
{
    $lineAux=$line.Split(";")
    write-output ('<a href="'+$lineAux[4]+'" target="_blank"><img class="image" style="position:absolute;left:'+$lineAux[0]+'px;top:'+$lineAux[1]+'px;height:'+$lineAux[3]+'px;width:'+$lineAux[2]+'px" src="'+$lineAux[6]+'" border=0 title="'+$lineAux[5]+'"></a>') | Out-file $OutputFile -append

}
