Problems with Raspberry Pi and Antminer U2

For the past couple of weeks, I have been using an Antminer U2 device directly plugged in to one of the USB ports on my Raspberry Pi model B and running bfgminer to do my bitcoin mining (I usually overclock at 2.0 or 2.2 Gh/s). At least once a day, the mining randomly stops, and I need to ssh into my Pi to restart the mining. Most of the time, the internet connection has not been interrupted. Sometimes when I restart bfgminer, my Antminer is not found. When that happens, I try setting the clock to a lower value, but that still doesn't work. However, sometimes I can restart bfgminer and overclock the Antminer without any problems.

I believe that I am drawing too much power in the RPi's USB ports, and this is causing the Antminer to shut down randomly. However, I am able to overclock the Antminer for hours at a time. It seems that I might need a powered USB hub to connect the Antminer to. I would prefer to keep mining from the RPi's USB port, just to keep the size of my unit small.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to how I can fix this problem and keep my Antminer mining without any random stoppages?

Also, if I do need a powered USB hub, which ones do you recommend for the Pi that are low-cost? At that point I may purchase another Antminer.

I never heard of anyone mining a U2 directly with a Pi lol

A Pi is a memory control card, you use one for miners that don't have built in miner software; it's not meant to power a Bitcoin miner.

The best way to set those up is to get a regular USB hub and a fan, MinerSource.net has awesome ones

You'd use a Pi for miners like RockMiners, a USB miner can be set up with a program like EZMiner (or whatever the name is).

Miners that have their own power supply, require very little power from the Pi...

So try it with a good quality USB hub and see what happens!

USB ports on the Pi only really support 140mA each, just about enough to run a keyboard and mouse.  The fact you got any miner working at all is a total freak of science.  You've probably burnt out the USB ports.

The USB ports are actually still working just fine, possibly because I had a fan on it the entire time.

Anyway, thanks for the help! I'll look into getting a good usb hub for my Pi.

if you can afford it go for a dlink dhub 7 there about the best bang for buck out there and they come with 3A plugs so youll be able to run 3 or 4 overclocked miners on it pretty safely
