haven't gamed since my 5770 I started mining on, should crossfire up a couple of these babies oneday - just to check gaming performance

Well at lower resolutions it doesn't really mater because both will perform well above what is requires, but at higher resolution the 7970 catches up in perforce because it has more ram. Also since it overclocks so well it is able to beat a 680.

On a note with gaming, a 5770 was able to handle MW2, and Black Ops on all high settings except for AA off (I never play with AA, it presents a mouse lag). Take note that this with a AMD 965 and 3840x1024 resolution:

So anything a 5770 or higher is enough for gaming, unless you really want to get every frame of every second possible. I honestly don't notice a difference between the 5770, 5870, 5970, or currently CF 7970's in regards to fps and image quality on the latest games.

I could even go as low as a 7850 or 650. I want at least the same power my 6950 has. I know what cards are out there and their performance levels are and what I need. I want a new gpu card so I just am trying to decide if I want a gaming + mining for a higher price, or gaming + low tdp(quiet).

Actually I was hoping for the opposite. I am leaning 7970 as you could tell. I was hoping someone would be able to bring up an argument on why not to get the 7970 that I hadn't thought of. As this is the bitcoin forum I know the obvious answer from here is a 7970. On techpowerup, a forum I frequent, they say people should get the 670 because of price/performance. I asked here to in wondering if any bitcoiners would give me a similar argument. I have used profitability calculators too. I did ask if that 600 mhashes of it was worth it but that is an impossible question because if someone could tell me something beyond a profit calc... they would be stupid for sharing.

I almost didn't start this thread but decided to anyway just for the discussion, and that maybe just maybe someone will say that magic something that decides it for me. Wishful thinking... probably.

600MH/s is about ~$1.50 a day (after you minus electricity). That's something the 670 wont give you. To me, that alone is worth the "cost" of not going with Nvidia (Nvidia drivers are the shit).
