One thing that is missing from the crypto space, and could help weeding out the crap is a widely regarded rating service. There is coinwarz, but of course, it only purports to show instantaneous profitability of
mining different coins. In a lot of cases, there is a question mark on the network's hash-rate, and the methodology for ranking is not clear. (Is their formula published somewhere ?)
There are a few coin-catalog type sites, but no serious efforts to rate the different alts on some a standard, well-thought-out and clearly explained criteria. Most places list market cap, which is a good metric of worth, but not really enough.
Deeper analysis would have to be applied to rate coins and advise the general public as to whether an alt-coin was truly worthless (aka a "
shitcoin") or whether it was worthwhile and how it compares in specific criteria to its peers, or what makes it notable/ promising from among the sea of clones.
Criteria could include: Hash rate of the nework. Strength of the community. Exchanges: how many trade the coin, what are their recent volumes. Number of Transactions. Technology / Algortihms. Proof-of-Developper (PoD). Developper Support / Responsiveness. Number of Web Sites / pages talking about the coin, supporting it. Actual merchants/ online stores accepting the coin.
Is there anything like this in existence ?
CryptoCertify offers some of this for new coin launches, but is not a guide for average people wanting to know a particular alt-coin's worth / strengths-weaknesses vs. others. Other places have lists of coins, but none of these services have achieved widely-acknowledged recognition or trust yet
