There are several different types of Bitcoin clients. The most secure are full nodes like Bitcoin Core, which will follow the rules of the network no matter what miners do. Even if every miner decided to create 1000 bitcoins per block, full nodes would stick to the rules and reject those blocks.

There are so many ideas that are just waiting for someone to pick up it is hard to know where to start.

Deterministic wallets will get added into bitcoind 0.7. It is likely this will become standard and hence all clients and libraries will want to implement it.

There is still no easy to use open source merchant catalog software using bitcoin (we are working on it - MultiBitMerchant but just do not have the manpower)

Custom bitcoin devices and bitcoin radio devices have been discussed in detail to the point where with work they could be made. I am talking hundreds of hours of work.

It was only last week that the first iPhone app that did not have to pull down the whole blockchain was released. It shows you can get something into iOS with perseverance.

Noone has released anything to do with multisig or contracts yet. Again, this is not something you can create in an evening. It is going to be a slog to iron out the problems - it has not been done yet !

Lots of projects know what they want to do but things are being down mostly in evenings and the weekends so it is slow.

Just have a look round the Development and Technical, Alternative Clients and Project Development fora until you spot something that takes your interest and matches your skillset and give it a go.

Broadcast buy Bitcoin offers and sell Bitcoin offers over the Bitcoin network/in the blockchain. Accepted becomes a contract and then BTC moves to an escrow service (or an escrow coin) while bank money transfer info is sent to the seller either encrypted directly or via the escrow service. The goal, decentralize trading or exchanging.

For Bitcoin to be a true global currency the value of BTC needs always to rise.
If BTC became the global currency & money supply = 100 Trillion then ⊅1.00 BTC = $4,761,904.76.

Are you looking to build a business, to help an open source project, or just apply bitcoin to solve a problem?

Also, what type of skills?  e.g., a C++ dev that can debug threading issues is different from a front-end web dev w/ UX skills that can crank out a great new site.  And interests?   Finance (e.g., trading bots), Mobile, Embedded, etc.?

Latest "killer" project.

This would be an app in the mobile gambling category.

Needed is a mobile app (native for Android) or mobile-enabled web app (which works on Android, iPhone, iPad, Windows mobiles, etc.) that acts as a front end to http://www.SatoshiDice.com  (that one, specifically, for now.  Eventually the app would be used against some other nearly identical instant-payout blockchain wagering).

Holds a wallet, preferably running transactions through Blockchain's host.

Probably would not ever get approved for App Store for U.S. as this is probably considered an gambling app, so maybe the web app would offer a higher user base potential.

How about a speculation app. Tell it what the current buy and sell prices are. Then it will ask you the pertinent questions about how you think those prices will change and your confidence in those predictions and it feeds back an optimized decision.

Here's half an idea:

OUTLINE:
Insure bitcoin transactions.
That way online shops can much easier adopt them, because they don't have to either wait for block confirmations or trust their customer blindly.

TECHNICAL BITS:
Basically, contribute to all mining pools. When (presumably within at most a few seconds) most or all work on finding blocks incorporating the transaction, you are almost sure it will be incorporated, and it's an easy exercise to model and calculate the small probability that it might not be. So you know quite well how much you need to charge for the insurance, and it will probably come out rather affordable.

LEGAL ASPECT:
How do you convince shops (your customers) to trust you to pay up on the promised insurance? [they might fear this is just a scam operation]

If that last question can somehow be answered...well, I think I can easily contribute the rest (or, preferably, create it in a team)!

What is necessary is a reputational network which works pseudonymously.
