tld with 1 letter would never be reserved by icann.
Same for .p2p i guess, but without warranty.

Which one do you prefer ?

Does it matter? If Namecoin reaches critical mass, most people will stick with the system that came first and simply ignore ICANN's conflicting .bit or .web assignments.

Remember, ICANN can't force anybody to use their root nameserves.  Even for a non-geek user all it takes to circumvent ICANN is a browser plugin, and I assume that this type of plugin would be turned on by default on a Firefox download, if Namecoin were ever to become mainstream.

".web" is pronounceable and has mainstream appeal. For example, the general public would find it natural for the CIA website to be at cia.web, and for the main Bitcoin website to be at bitcoin.web.

".bit" is too nerdy-sounding to catch on.

This is one of the reasons why ".com" has been so successful. It's easy to pronounce without sounding stupid.

Anyway, after ".web" achieves dominance, the suffix can just be dropped. To get to the CIA website, you type CIA into your browser. To get to the main Bitcoin website, type bitcoin into your browser.

word of advise: take over ALL TLDs except those which are already taken including any length from 1 to 12 symbols. (Maybe leave ICANN to play in 2 letter TLD sandbox). Think Big! Treat existing DNS infrastructure as legacy stuff.

Added:
Break all the rules. Discard stupid DNS artefacts, wherever possible, in the name of simplicity. Shock the world.

How would you design the whole thing ?
I guess it wound't be compatible with existing DNS ?
(An advantage of remaining compatible is you don't need to run the namecoin software if you don't want)

Is it you who links to some (long) paper of an old ICANN guy no satified of the current functionning ?

Do we even need to respect names taken on icanns names list?

They're not the boss of us, our system is separate, we can probably do .com, .net, .org and everything. Ours is a competing domain name system, that's superior.

I say everything is up for grabs, this is our internet, and we're taking it all back. Fuck what anyone else says.

Can we finally kill off 'www.' while we're at it? Sorry I haven't looked into Namecoins yet, so I don't know the details.

khal, there are no big technical difficulties with that. If you are the man behind namecoin, talk to me in private I'll do what I can to help.

nefario, give the enemy a retreat route to weaken his resolve to fight to death. let ICANN play in 2 symbol reservation plus whatever is taken .com .org .net etc..., take everything else.

OK, but as soon as they're too weak to fight back we go for the kill.

I just don't understand the attraction of "bit".

The name of the system, "namecoin", doesn't allude to "bit". The general public don't have a clue about "bit".

And yet, in this poll ".bit" is overwhelmingly preferred to ".web". Anyone like to venture an opinion why?

Because a sample of people from a forum such as this one looks nothing like the general public.

I too chose '.web'; It just makes more sense to me.

.p2p makes sense too, however it's annoying and inconvenient to say out loud.

OK, I'm not an expert, but do we really need something like TLD? Just allow any names you want and let the market decide. It may be that in the beginning DNS servers will simply not respect Namecon names with .com.

It would be annoying that the DNS servers do not respect existing names.

The poll has been closed. Vince's poll has the same result.

So, first TLD will be .bit Smiley
