People on this forum in general have no idea what 'backing' means.  This word has been and continues to be used to mean anything and everything, rendering it completely meaningless.

So now there are two reasons to never speak of backing:
1. Endless, tired debates about whether bitcoin has backing or whether it should.  (This is a good reason)
2. Impossible to even discuss because the word 'backing' itself has become completely meaningless.  (somewhat unfortunate)

Once a transaction has 6 confirmations, it is extremely unlikely that an attacker without at least 50% of the network's computation power would be able to reverse it.

Perhaps, if as assets the gold being categorize in one of the precious metals by rarity and trust, found by technology in the past, witch was, perhaps, position can be change in the future, is it. With a lots of variety of currency transactions models plus with current technology it creates another models of currency currently. They compete each other, their pros and cons have. Vanish, the one who lost will.
