So they have their donation thing going on.

I did not feel like giving out my visa info but wanted to support the site as I use it a lot.

I e-mail their C.S. saying if they take BTC I will send them $15 USD worth. With in 30 seconds I get a response from the Sr. Manager of global fundrasing operations :O!!  With an e-mail outline that infact THEY do take bitcoin.  With a link on accpeting it.

So as I keep my word I donate $15 worth and respond with the Tx ID and the manager thanks me for the donation.

Just thought it was cool.

Ha yeah, I guess it was due to the fact that someone gave Jimmy Wales some BTC to play around with, and he finally decided that Wikipedia should also accept Bitcoin. It's awesome to see that people start to 'get' Bitcoin, as soon as they make some first-hand experiences with it.

I was happy to hear about it when I found that wikipedia accepts btc donations.  I haven't yet contributed, but the fact that they're taking btc makes it more likely that I will eventually.

They already were accepting Bitcoin if you haven't seen that on any Bitcoin related news site.

But still cool though that you got an answer within 30 seconds, not sure if it was automated or not.  Smiley

This is realy good news, hope others will follow soon, I tend to spend my BTC more easily on supporting good initiatives than I would with the conventional currencies.

100% not automated we exchanged several e-mails and she even thanked me when I sent in my Tx Id showing I sent them BTC.  I thought it was automated at first until I started reading and she was mentioning other people had asked...  Then started going back and forth with a few e-mails lol.  Friendly people those wiki people.

Thats why big ass BTC whales should be doing giveaways to random people instead of hoarding all the cash as the coin crashes. Only once you own some btc you keep being interested on it, otherwise you see it as something that doesnt go with you.

Very interesting....I am surprised they don't advertise that when they are trying to get donations?  Seems it would be good to put that on the page, at the very least it will generate some interest"What is bitcoin?"

I don't think they care to promote BTC.  IMO they should have an "other payments" button right beside visa and paypal.

Google the link to find out how to donate via BTC.

Before they decided to accept BTC donations, Jimmy Wales (co-funder) was discussing the issue on reddit. And if I remember correctly, they had some concerns that some people who would normally send say $10 will send much smaller amount in bitcoins. Also, people who donate regularly could make payments less often after switching to BTC etc.

It's not completely unreasonable, I've seen many very small BTC charity donations (ie 0.001 = ~$0.37), if you use paypal/cc you probably won't send anything below $1 or even $5.

That's why wikimedia (and others) opt to 'hide' the BTC donation option.

but it still gives others flexibility of paying and they are still getting money.
