I purchased bitcoins today and when I got home bitcoin said something about an update needed or nodes needing upgrading or something.

I closed bitcoin and now when I try to open it I get a runaway exception

EXCEPTION: NSt8ios_base7failurE
ReadCompactSize():Size too large
"my c drive address"\bitcoin\bitcoin-qt.exe in Runaway exception

I haven't tried anything because I'm new to this and don't want to jeopardise my bitcoins.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks guys

B

PS I am running Windows 7 if it is relevent

First thing, hit windows key + R
and paste:
%APPDATA%/Bitcoin

Back up the file called wallet.dat

Beyond that, I'll leave it to someone else -- my eyes are half shut Tongue

backup your wallet.dat (coins are there) and delete everything except wallet.dat from
C:\Users\[username]\AppData\Roaming\Bitcoin

try running bitcoin again, if it works it will have to redownload the blockchain, if not then try reinstalling

always have a backup of wallet.dat

Thanks guys,
I did that and now it re-downloading all the blocks. Any idea what caused this issue?
I don't want it to happen again.

My wallet.dat is on several flash media devices, encrypted. Soon it will be in several locations separated by hundreds and in one case thousands of kilometers.

Another thing to back up, either with hints or writing it down and locking the written copy in a safe, is the password for your wallet. If you forget that, you're boned.

I'm selling great Minion Games like The Manhattan Project, Kingdom of Solomon and Venture Forth at 4% off retail starting June 2012. PM me or go to my thread in the Marketplace if you're interested.

For Settlers/Dominion/Carcassone etc., I do email gift cards on Amazon for a 5% fee. PM if you're interested.
