Missing Mt Gox Bitcoins Likely an Inside Job, Say Japanese Police

Blame for 99% of the bitcoins missing from Mt Gox falls on internal system manipulation and not any external attack, a major Japanese newspaper has claimed.

The news is popping up all over the place, I reckon that Mark Karpeles has likely created a scapegoat using his insider knowledge of the system, shame the Japanese police haven't gone and asked anyone on the bitcointalk forum to go and take a look at his servers. Oh and no, I don't believe the fucker is innocent one bit, of course there needs to be a proper investigation but I'm convinced either he got someone else to do his dirty work or manipualated data to make it look like it was someone else.

There was always something very wrong with the way MT.GOX operated.

The 'Willy' bot appeared at certain times in late 2013 and seemingly under several different User IDs, all of which had irregularities in their records, such as "??" in place of a user location.

It would pop up under a new User ID, spend (for the most part) $2.5m buying bitcoins at the then-current market rate, and then cease trading. It is possible this helped push up bitcoin's price in November 2013.

That'd be a shame...

Missing Mt Gox Bitcoins Likely an Inside Job,
Yeah, no shit. I seemed to gather this was the general consensus here anyway.

I think Karpales was in on it. It's not that hard to steal the bitcoin and make them dissapear, especially when you're on the inside and as knowledgeable as him.

I'm very surprised that Mark is not in jail, the police seem way too slow.
Perhaps he is (temporarily) protected by "handlers" who are powerful and in the shadows? Wouldn't that be convenient if he was to suffer from a "heart attack"?
