Why buy it when you can make it yourself? Germans are making Bitcoin payment terminals called PEY from… used Google Nexus 7 smartphones and 3D-printed housings.

it is a cheap and quick solution for the merchants who want to integrate bitcoin payment. It is a excellent business opportunity. If it will be applicable to the whole world, the business will be successful.

At least that is exactly what a group of Hannover-based Bitcoin devotees makes their custom terminals from. PEY is what these devices are called, and every Hannover retailer or shop owner can get one for free.

These type of payment terminals aren't new so there's nothing really special about this one, but how do retailers get them for free? It doesn't say.

What does the "PEY" mean?

It's probably just its name. Probably doesn't mean anything fancy.

They were giving out the first 50 for free as a proof of concept.

The terminals are a plastic housing holding a cell phone. The 3D printing of it is probably more expensive than if they would mass produce a plastic mold.

I think that is great! Who says a payment method has to be monopolized.

This is a major step indeed. What we need is a low cost, easy to use and setup system to drive retail adoption. Imagine what changes this is going to bring when it reaches mainstream
