If no one has responded to a thread in over a month, theres no need to but into it and bring it back to the first few announce pages. Its hard enough to keep track of whats happening here without the noise of checking out some low post count thread only to realize its from June.
If I notice a necro'd thread I'll be reminding people to leave it alone.

When you post to remind people, the topic gets bumped again and the chances of a real conversation starting grow even higher.   Shocked

Necros aren't against the rules.

Necro should only be reported if there's no valuable or relevant information in them and are clearly a pointless or useless post. They are allowed if it's contributing to the discussion and following the rest of the forums rules. If you believe it's not, report them.

Posting on the thread reminding people that it's a necro would be contributing to the forums noise, so you might be trying to solve one problem but, adding to it. Just report any post you consider not constructive and a useless post. Don't get me wrong there are plenty of people doing it just to pad their post count, and I always report those and they get dealt with within a few hours at the most.

That is the irony of responding to a necro thread, however not all of the necros are evil
(all the revived threads of scams people were involved in etc)
If they were not revived periodically might just fall to the wayside if some important news comes along as Welsh said if it does not seem important report it.

If they're just clearly posting irrelevant crap to make their post count go up then report them, I do it all the time, very, very rarely some necro's are legitimate so I've left them alone but often they're just being spammed.

There are sometimes legit reasons to narco a thread, for example the reused r value thread was narcoed when it was noticed that BCI was using weak RNG in creating new private keys

I necro'd this post that was over two years old in order to confirm that a user had lied to me and had not paid me by 2015 as he had originally promised:
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=78386.msg10017907#msg10017907

Previously I have necro'd this post regarding "predict the next two years":
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=82990.msg6843193#msg6843193

Necros are almost always bad, but it is nice to revisit old threads with relevant new information and discussion from time to time. I wouldn't recommend ALWAYS reporting them.

I get really nervous when people complain about necros.  I wish they'd just let it go.  So many times I'm scanning google for various bits of information and hope to rekindle a discussion that may advance my learning.  And then someone comes in and is all up in my discussion with off-base complaints about "necro".  Give me a brick so I can break their computer.

If you're having a legit conversation it's fine, but if you're just posting one liner generic crap without even trying to talk to people that's when I'll post a report.

The problem is that other people (sometimes even me) don't realize that the thread was necro'd. I rarely read the date/time of any post actually.
A few people post without noticing, and the conversation starts.

If it's a discussion which is related to the topic, then I don't see why this is a problem. Unless, you see people posting to pad their post count, but then they are breaking a rule anyway and will be reported. There's genuine reasons to necro a thread and it doesn't matter if others contribute to it without realising the date as long as it's contributing to the thread and isn't breaching any other rules.

I've been caught out a couple of times myself I'll admit, but that's why I've taught myself to always check the damn post date first, now that people do check you'll see that these necro spammers are targeting more recent ones because they think they'll get away with it.

So it would be okay if I start reviving threads that Satoshi made many years back? (not that I would do this)
Making a related post isn't that hard, just saying. Maybe there should be an unofficial "time limit" or something?

If it's bringing up a valid point which your not repeating I don't see a problem. If you are bringing up something which has already been discussed in that thread, then no it should be reported in my opinion. It's hard to judge in some cases there's no solid rule and that's why it's up to the moderators on a individual basis. I don't think we should make the rule that if x number of days have gone you can't post regardless what you are posting.

Well if the thread has tens of pages, one can't really know if it was already discussed. It takes time to check on an individual basis.
I was never suggesting a rule, that would be harsh.

Well, yeah that is true. But, that gives me the idea the user hasn't read the thread and doesn't have much interest in it anyway. Normally if someone has any interest in the thread they will read most of the replies. I know a lot of people don't do it and I would be guilty of that on multiple instances. But, yeah that is a problem in the larger threads and I don't have any answers for that one.

Is it not easy to open new thread , link the old and start a new conversation in it? Or maybe is it not allowed?

Not sure lol, you'd have to check with the mods on that one, it's usually pretty obvious though what is and isn't a necro post, you guys must see it, blatant "I agree" posts for example I've seen a lot of.

Some old threads could be useful to necro to put some things into perspective such as "Bitcoin is dead. We will never see $31 again."
