Hi,

This request is pretty simple and I guess it would be very useful , now you tell me how we will know that someone got banned or not , we can't .
We want to know this while we visit his profile , I never knew about this because I never saw a Banned member but after My Post , SaltySpitoon (Global Moderator said) :

Quote
Banned, thanks to everyone who reported the mass spam pms and to the OP

but when I vist the user profile I don't see any changes and that what we would like to see . His name is normal , his Position also
So what you could do is that when a Staff member ban a user , his name become like this newminer7950 and Position changes to "Banned" and when he got Unbanned (if he got unbanned) his Position changes to what it was (Full member or whatever) and his name also .

The Bitcoin software, network, and concept is called "Bitcoin" with a capitalized "B". Bitcoin currency units are called "bitcoins" with a lowercase "b" -- this is often abbreviated BTC.

I think it would be useful, though not sure if it would be implemented or what the admin's stance on it is.

Yeah the developpers of the new forum told me that it depends if Theymos accepts or not , so I would to hear what theymos think about this idea Smiley

This would be useful. Currently, we will have to look at the ban log to know the users who have banned but I think very old users will be removed from the list after a specific time - I am not sure about this.

I've asked the same thing a few months ago , and this was the reply :

Modlog is two weeks.

Maybe when an user is banned I think it easy to theymos add under the "rank coins" a little word:  "Banned"  ,

What do you think ?

Why do you need to know when someone else is banned?

Well to answer BadBear , it's pretty simple , Sometimes we want to contact someone (a friend) on the forums and we see them banned ... we just don't bother our selfs , also to make deals , let's say someone is selling something and he got banned (he left his BTC adress on the thread and asked to send BTC then he send product) .. so we just don't send Bitcoin while he is banned etc ... a lot of things , it would be really useful to be honest
Both Banning date , Banning reason should be also available on the Profile if you ask me

PS : Note sure if we are able to use private message while we are banned or not . speaking Theoretically

No, when an user is banned he can't send/post anything here in the forum. He can only read...

It's not essential info to have but I'm sure there are a couple of valid uses. Say if you have loaned someone money out and they suddenly disappear it could look like they're trying to scam you if there's no other warning, though I don't think this will be implemented.

I don't think this needs to be implemented. If you've lent to someone and they've disappeared, then it doesn't matter if they are banned or not really. You can still send a message saying to contact you elsewhere if you have a suspicious that the person is banned.

It wouldn't hurt if it was implemented, but it isn't priority.

I wasn't saying there's never a valid reason to know when someone is banned, there are some. OTOH it could also be abused. For example, if you know someone is banned, then you could make a new account and impersonate them, or attempt to get them punished for ban evasion.

I'm inclined to think it's not really anyone else's business. If you were to get banned for posting granny porn would you want everyone to know that? People can usually still change their signatures and personal message (below the avatar area) if they want people to know they were banned, and why (though the why would probably be misleading).

I think that a banned usergroup would be a good idea, rather than the sort of shadow-bans currently in effect. Bitcointalk is actually one of the few sites I've seen that only shadowbans, rather than banning the user and placing them in the "banned" group.

But BadBear got a point here ... Bitcointalk do allow using Proxies, Vpn's , Tor and multiple accounts ... Other forums that show banned people don't allow such a thing so it's kinda make sense .

But doesn't Bitcointalk discourage using Tor, VPN's and creating multiple accounts by charging users who register accounts over a proxy/VPN/Tor? I thought I read somewhere that if an account is registered over one of these services, a fee needs to be paid before the account can be used.

No I don't think. The use of tor , and the various proxy/vpn is not forbidden. If someone register an account from tor they *must* pay a little fee or he cannot post or send pm.

Oh ok that makes sense.

Reading over that again that's maybe what I meant to say... considering I often use a VPN here and I haven't ever been asked to pay a fee or anything.  Roll Eyes

Only open proxies (Tor) and banned IPs have to pay the fee. VPNs are not open proxies, however some may have been banned due to prior abuse by other members so a fee may be required.

OK that makes sense. Thanks for the clarification.

So if a user has been banned on a certain IP, is that a permanent ban or temporary? Will all users on the same IP have to pay a fee if registering on that IP address forever, or will the ban fee be removed a few months, or a year for example, later?

Sorry for zombificating this thread but I think there are valid reasons allow a message in the profile page at least. I mean it is already possible to ask in the meta thread about why an account was banned. So a users is not completely speechless. He could ask to contact someone there too when he has taken loans or so.

So for the banned user it would not be a problem being banned. The problem is that account sales are allowed and accounts are taken as collateral often too. With collaterals it would not be a problem when trading without escrow but for normal trades without escrow the user would send the bitcoins first. The buyer would get a worthless account and that's it.

And I doubt the risk of being imporsonated is much higher then. There is a warning in every pm about newbies and even when an account is not banned it would be possible to impersonate practically the same way. Someone getting suspicious would not deal with such a person anyway so informing the real account owner would not serve much purpose.

I tried to compile a list of checks for users that want to trade an account without escrow or don't find an escrow for it. In order to lower the amount of scams. The info about a banned account would be a very important one and I was astonished to find out that I only could see if an account was banned because i logged in as an escrow to secure it. Normal buyers would not be able to.

Please ALWAYS contact me through bitcointalk pm before sending someone coins.
