Ira (bearbones) and I were chatting today. We've come up with a new slogan which should be made the official slogan of Bitcoin:

Bitcoin
Magic Computer Money

So the new strategy is that whenever you're introducing Bitcoin to someone, don't try to explain how it works, or why it's so amazing. Just say, "it's magic computer money."

Also, when users open up the Satoshi desktop client software, there should be a new splash screen that flashes black and yellow real fast for about 5 seconds and it should say "MAGIC COMPUTER MONEY"

Thoughts?
"There should not be any signed int. If you've found a signed int somewhere, please tell me (within the next 25 years please) and I'll change it to unsigned int." -- Satoshi

I'm glad you are brainstorming, but... You expect people to have blind trust in something you introduce to them as "magic"?  And it involves money? I certainly hope you forget about this idea for a while, then reconsider.

Eh...

I think I like what you're trying to do.  I just really don't think I like the slogan.  It just sounds like an infomercial to me, something that Billy Mays would've been selling (though it is totally resistant to being run over by a car  Cheesy).

But, that's just my opinion.  I'd like to hear others' thoughts.

We're still in 'early adopter' phase and a high fraction of people who join now will be interested in the tech and details of bitcoin. But later on a vanishing fraction will be able or willing to understand that stuff. It will be known as magic internet money when it proliferates.

If it were Magic Computer Money, then wouldn't The Wizards just run the game?

i like this a lot.

it's common parlance to refer to cool stuff as "magic".

it works, and is even a good counter to the frequent criticism of what it is.

"well yeah it IS magic computer money."

Quote
Clarke's Three Laws are three "laws" of prediction formulated by the British writer and scientist Arthur C. Clarke. They are:
1. When a distinguished but elderly scientist states that something is possible, he is almost certainly right. When he states that something is impossible, he is very probably wrong.
2. The only way of discovering the limits of the possible is to venture a little way past them into the impossible.
3. Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic.

I'd say that Clarke's 3rd law applies here. Not sure if this would make sense as PR strategy, however. You can, perhaps, just say that it is "pure money". (only one component of "pure money" we are lacking: universal adoption).

Only if Derren Brown designs it like the Inside Your Mind Waking Dead game.

For Bitcoin to be a true global currency the value of BTC needs always to rise.
If BTC became the global currency & money supply = 100 Trillion then ⊅1.00 BTC = $4,761,904.76.

Money is already magical. It's not real, doesn't exist, but people behave as if it does. Like any other religion really.

Bitcoin combines money, the wrongest thing in the world, with software, the easiest thing in the world to get wrong.

It sounds like a feasible addition to ones explanation arsenal. If a very young kid or a very senior citizen asks, then what?
