they should send a sd card preflashed for your rasp-pi what a p.i.t.a. to flash an sd with a mac.  gave up purchased a reader/writer for my windows 7 and flashed an sd card in under 30 minutes.

 Roll Eyes

Not a "p.i.t.a." unless you're doing it wrong. For future reference: sudo dd if=/path/to/file of=/dev/rdiskX bs=2M

http://elinux.org/RPi_Easy_SD_Card_Setup#Using_command_line_tools_.281.29

thank you will check this out.  the link you gave I used.

I used 3 youtube  videos  none of them   used bs=2M at the end of the command most likely why I could not get it to flash .  most said use bs=1M or bs=1m

going to be busy today with a cable upgrade.  will have a few hours down time. I will try to burn an sdcard on one of my 3 macmini's today.

...

so far stock freq   and  a few  custom freq  this chart will be slow to develop maybe 3 days time

450:390:370 = 25.27  and 0.681 watts   per gh  volts get stable at 0.7775 volts

420:360:340 = 23.44  and  0.604 watts per gh   volts get stable at 0.7375 volts--------this seems to be best for now it is late will set this for the night

410:350:330 = 22.83  not stable with 0.72 volts will try again with 0.7300 volts

410:350:330 = 22.83  and  0.618 watts per gh   volts get stable at  0.7250 volts
400:340:320 = 22.22  and  0.631 watts per gh   volts get stable at  0.7125 volts

 370:310:290 = 20.39 0.568 watts per gh this is freq 20.39

this is doing 772 gh at 439 watts  silly quiet under 40db

dropped off to 762 gh at 439 watts  still that is 0.576 watts so  quiet I am really impressed.

If someone built a case you could house 2 of these and run them off a 1000 watt psu

cheap low cost no. well built really quiet yes .  you know people that say I want to support the network does not matter if I make lots of money.  this is your miner
the setting above is pretty efficient. the unit is really quiet with no mods. This allows you to balance the pool choice.

I can run kano's pool ck's pool and f2p pool. supports ck and kano gets steady money.  allows me a shot at a block. lastly the wife won't hear it make noise.

Found this

https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Avalon4

MM Ver   Chip Freq   Voltage   Hashrate   Power usage
4.0     420:390:360    8000   980G   594Watt
4.0     450:390:370    8125   1T           640Watt
4.0     450:400:390    8250   1.1T           655Watt
4.1     420:390:360    7625   980G   542Watt >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> set my avalon to this
4.1     450:390:370    8000   1T           600Watt
4.1     500:450:430    8125   1.14T   710Watt
4.1     550:500:450    8250   1.25T   900Watt
4.1     570:510:470    8375   1.3T       990Watt

now doing   964 gh
asic freg =  24.42
asic volts = 0.7625

watts at kwatt meter = 625
eff is                           0.648 watts per gh

needs more tweaking .  I did see something my firmware is

411501-08e45110

this is not the newest firmware.

I like using the rasp pi I can have 3 or 4 flashed firmwares and switch them up

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
also I have 2 devices  and that is wrong >>>>> fixed it only need 1 cable plugged into the a-4.1 and the rasp pi second is for 2nd a-4.1

Excellent review again Philipma! Your SP20 review is what sold me. I would sell my SP20s and convert to these new Avalons in a heart beat if the price was better. I currently move my SP20s in and out of different rooms via a mobile shelving unit to deal with the noise. Even with a large group buy the price is not competitive. Price needs to come down before I'd consider making the switch.

yeah the price point here  is high also add in a rasp pi.

when you figure this out it is viable for a 'free' power guy that absolutely needs quiet.

My home now has
1 Avalon-4.1
1 s-5
9 sp20's

I can't use  avalon-4.1  in bulk purchase my power costs are too high.

I can use the sp20 in bulk as I can manage  the noise.

I can use the 1 avalon-4.1 in my friends office as it will replace the pair of s-1's I have had running in his place since July.
Power is 2.4 cents a kwatt in his office.

I can run the  new gear for 9 months or more. Sell the s-3's at a cheap price on ebay. Making the a-4 a natural upgrade for me.  But it is a 1 unit upgrade not a 9 unit upgrade.
I look at this gear as a specialty item. Not right for everyone.

Biggest flaw is price.

I can get it to .61 watts at 830gh
I can run it at 500gh and do 244 watts that is really efficient really quiet. but costly.

Still like it a lot.

nice review...lets see how much better efficiency we can get...sorry for not responding sooner
For a better ECO mode use 340 with 6875 this gives me 431W according to APC Cool

okay read macgyver007 thread and reply to me here.

I decide to burn a second sdcd card.  set it checked it it works.  now I can really play with this machine and just pop in the second card to my rasp pi if I truly trash the settings.

I realize the custom settings are easy and I did this twist.

1 freq number only 340 which is 20.75ghs or should be about 800gh

it works but has lot of errors and needs more then 0.7000 volts

post above shows a simple way to set custom but i underpowered it so I set same freq 340 = 20.75gh per chip = 800 gh and gave more power

better results  with added power 7125 vs 7000

less errors higher hash

so on custom   340 for freq  7250 for volts and false for auto volts looks rock solid

this is easy but it appears that custom setup does not give the same watts per gh that eco does.

Choice of modes I picked custom

on custom I set freq 340 - 20.75 gh = 800gh  volts = 7250------- I used false for auto volts--- I go to see dh errors and decide if volts are good

this is getting really good error numbers

I like the form factor of these a lot more than the S5, but I just don't see how this can be competitive vs the S5 or the SP20. A three-pack of these is BTC6.39, or $1405.80 + shipping. Meanwhile three S5's are $1110 + shipping and three SP20s is $1195 with free shipping.
The only possible benefit I can see is lower noise vs the others, but then if you downclock the SP20 to Avalon4 levels you can run at 10% fan where noise isn't a big deal either, plus the SP20s are a good bit cheaper.

so custom and 340 at  7250 volts gives best dh rate

next is 330  = 20.15gh a chip at 7000 volts

I would have thought I would have a higher hashrate but dh is really low

This is truly quieter then the sp20  not really close.  I have sp20s at 6% fan speed  and it is quieter then the s-5 delta fan  mod at freq 312. It looks better then the s-5.

But it is costly and is more of a show piece item for your office. For me I  will use the one piece to replace 2 s-3's at my friends office.

I also believe  as a concept piece for space heating it is a winner.

A smart company that builds space heaters need to look into this tech and consider making a Delonghi miner/space heater.

http://www.delonghi.com/en-us/products/comfort/portable-heating

I will continue testing the custom part of miner config's

When you go under 340 for frequency strange things happen just try 339 and you will see....
I think the key here is auto volts and why we have a discrepancy with results...my pool results from 6875 are after 2 hours reporting the same hashrate on miner and pool 431W rock solid as originally the miner starts around 810 and drops to 793ish also after 24 hours roughly the same
when I edited the ECO mode, its still using auto volts which from what I see is the upper (max) voltage limit...give it a whirl by editing your eco file or change auto volts to true...and remember these units throttle power on a cycle

Right now Im using 400:370:340 with 7250 less errors more wattage...

Okay real fast on eco mode it gets .488 watts a gh very good but so far eco mode locks me into 244 watts and 500gh

they should send a sd card preflashed for your rasp-pi what a p.i.t.a. to flash an sd with a mac.  gave up purchased a reader/writer for my windows 7 and flashed an sd card in under 30 minutes.  works nice with a rasp pi. setup is very easy with a rasp pi and a good sd card.

back to efficiency this is a great office miner.  it is basically silent under 40db which is no noise at all.  so if you are a free power guy but must be quiet this seems better then the s-5 or sp20.

I am running 2 s-3's in my friends office at 2.4 cents a kwatt this is a good replacement for them.

more to quick seller   the s-5 is a tweakers delight .  there are 10 or more fan setups I did mounting setups and when sidehack comes out with a voltage controller (95% or so) the s-5 will be even more tweakable then now.

This is a set it and forget (at least I hope it is) .  Once I fuck with the custom setting and figure out the best numbers to use it will sit and mine quietly for a long time. It has a place for some of us.

It is not for a 10 miner in the garage setup.  Or any bigger farm. 100 in a barn 50 in a warehouse space.

But the guy that really needs peace and quiet this is the one. I will figure the best you can do in the next few days on the eco or custom end. Efficiency wise.

Is this quieter then the S3s?

they should send a sd card preflashed for your rasp-pi what a p.i.t.a. to flash an sd with a mac.  gave up purchased a reader/writer for my windows 7 and flashed an sd card in under 30 minutes.  works nice with a rasp pi. setup is very easy with a rasp pi and a good sd card.

back to efficiency this is a great office miner.  it is basically silent under 40db which is no noise at all.  so if you are a free power guy but must be quiet this seems better then the s-5 or sp20.

Is this quieter then the S3s?

yes unless you swap out one s-3 fan put in the silverstone 141 as the pull fan and downclock to freq 193

that  gives you about 380gh and the  s-3 uses around  300 watts.

the 2 in my friends office  are clocked to freq 212  have the stock fans and are a bit noisy.

I am getting 830-850 gh using 680 watts. that is .8 watts a gh for my current s-3's

So 1 of these will do more gh  use less watts and be quieter.

I will set it to do 900gh use 560 watts.  that will be .61 watts a gh for the a-4.1

I will sell off the 2 s-3's cheap on ebay.  It will work because he spends 2.4 cents a kwatt on power.

spent a long time doing customs as the settings

found a very good setting

849 gh  dh  errors  = 0.565%   I am using 492 watts = .58 watts per gh

I like this setting.  If I swap this with the pair of  s-3's at my buddies office.

I get the same hash rate and drop power from 680 to 492 watts.

 here are the settings
