I don't care much how many people haven't had problems with them bursting into flames. I would never in good conscience recommend anyone buy any piece of hardware designed to draw 400W from a single PCIe 6-pin jack.

From the standard PCIe 6 pin connector how much can you run off it typically? I know that 150W is safe for sure because most of the PCIe are 6 pin + 2pin for the powerful GPUs. I also have some lower end power supplies where there is a single rail which splits 2 ends and both have 6 pin + 2 pin such as pictured, and that wire is only 18AWG, so I know that you can for sure pull at least 300W off a connection like that if it was designed like that from the factory to power an R9 290X.  |

You could try a second-hand KnCMiner Neptune, they are pretty quiet.
+1 No sound at all except the quiet crackling of the flames. I think one of the issues with using a single cable at way too high of power is not necessarily the wire diameter, but the pins. In my experience, depending on what quality of PCIE pins and ends you have the pins get really hot, melt the ends, and catch them on fire. If you know what parts you have in the cables and on the board you might (maybe) be ok, but if you don't then it's a fairly high statistical probability of a fire. -- novak |

How about an SP10. Whisper quiet at only 80db.
Joking.
Definitely SP20 or S5. I'd pick the S5 because although it is slightly slower it uses less than half the power of the SP20 meaning you can get more plugged in before blowing the electrics to bits.

While I can't comment on the SP10 sound, I think the SP20 and the S5 are quite similar in power consumption at the S5 rated speed of 1115 GH/s. The S5 doesn't have a decisive edge in terms of power in my opinion, unless you try and extract the last 100-200 GH/s out of the SP20. My little SP20 is chugging along at 920 GH/s, using about 430 watts (measured at the wall). My speed is currently set by what I am willing to spend on electricity, and endure in terms of noise. |

Yeah sp20's are rated to do this speed , but my KIA FORTE is rated to do 120 mph. 1200gh at 650 watts is realistic once you go over 1400gh it sucks power like mad. and most top end numbers are 1625 at 1200 watts So if you're upgrading from possibly S1 or S3 you might be able to get away with your existing power depending what you got. |
