I was flicking through some of the computer and electronics catalogs that came in my mailbox and what surprised me was that all the computers - even the budget $300 ones - came with large, high-end flat-screen displays. It used to be that high-end displays only came with high-end computers and even then it was usually an additional option so for example, a typical computer might come with a 17" screen but you could upgrade to 19" for an additional cost or 21" if you had lots of money and the lower-end computers usually had 15" screens.

Why is this so?

Also I can see that most desktops are now of the "all in one" type where the whole computer is integrated into the monitor which is what Apple has always done with their iMacs. Could the reasons for both be related?

EDIT: Here's an example of what I'm talking about. It's a $460 computer with a 21.5" flat-screen display:

Because technology is becoming better and cheaper? Also, I don't think the computers in the catalog you received are representative of all computers on the market today.

Windows 8 from what I can see, seems that simple, they want to show off the annoying touch screen and stupid interface off so the screens naturally cost a hell of a lot more, but that's precisely why we all build our own computers when we can be bothered isn't it?

All in one computers have been around since before apple began touting it as "innovative". Just like their Internet Communications Device. As long as humans have eyes and a brain, there will be ripoffs and copys.

So, years ago, high-end (or simply, BIG) screens served well those working at Design, and some Critical Mission kind of endeavors.

Now, the thing is to SELL you a computer where you can have a hell of a graphic experience, be it watch your photos taken with a Kalaboonga-Mega pixel camera, or, watch a bluray or a netflix movie at high resolution.

And those at engineering or after a very specific thing, can still ask for an even more expensive, but best suited kind of workstation.

Like, ten years ago, the world was rather moving slowly toward movie-like format as a standard. Now it's a given.

I started with 15" CRT and then was delighted when I got a 17" flat screen CRT. Now I cant do without a 1080p 24" IPS display. The companies clearly understand what the customer wants.

That screen is actually ordinary right now. There's much better dpi and angle/colour than that.

Mid-range monitors are 2560 x 1440 and similar resolutions (typically IPS).

High end monitors are 4K and some are already beyond 4K.

We slowly get used to bigger stuff, not that from one day to another we pass from Windows 98 to Windows 8 in 6 months. Same stuff, same theory.
We all had smaller TV and now we can almost everyone afford a nice 32" or more in our home to view movies, It's the natural progression of evolution.

In my country you can usually buy computers with or without monitors and it's usually better to buy them separate or just use an old one. What annoys me is computers are not coming with ssd drives and standard and an additional HDD for storage.

A large display doesn't equal high end. You can have a 24" for $100 nowadays.
I always build my PCs and don't care much for overpriced all in one models Apple is pushing as well as those supposedly "gaming" units from Alienware. They are aimed at people who have a lot of money and not enough knowledge and time to picks components.

Even cheap displays these days don't really damage your eyes, it's only the old box ones that you have to worry about from what I know.
