Pure Solo Mining

Hey all, can seem to find a topic where i can set up my own mining pool. e.g I take the entire block unlike P2P pool. I have a nice little collection of miners now and would like to take the risk?

Does anyone know a link?

I have doing this thing for 1 year.
I prefer P2Pool system ... more data, more interest of the system.

The main issue with running solo at home is the risk of losing the block.
Of course you should run a bitcoind/bitcoin-qt at home no matter what, but when you already have the high variance of solo mining, to then lose a block due to it being stale on the bitcoin network if your home bitcoin isn't well connected to the network, that makes it seem all rather risky indeed.

You can check how stale your bitcoin is at getting new block information.
You need to know when the blocks were actually found and compare that to your bitcoin debug.log when it sees them also.

Blockchain doesn't display the time the block was found - they show the block header timestamp - that is allowed to be anything up to 2 hrs after the block was found - so ignore their timestamps.

I will point out that my pool does show the exact time the block was found by the pool, and then sent out to the bitcoin network, on the blocks page.
So you could compare to that information to get a rough idea.

Second issue of running pure solo mine is you need to power a server with decent quality.  So if you run 1 antminer s-5 at 1150gh and use 600 watts.

A quality  server will be another 100 watts.  so your cost is 700 watts vs 600 watts if you point it to kano/ck's solo pool.


You also need to build a server which I think will be at least 500 usd to build.  Maybe more like  1000 usd.

The main issue with running solo at home is the risk of losing the block.

This.  You can mitigate it by having a very well connected bitcoind running and using Matt's relay as well, but why take the added risk on top of an already slim chance you're going to find a block anyway?

However, if you really do want to run something locally, ckpool is very easy to setup and run (assuming you've got a Linux box).

True but a guy can dream.. I found my only block 2 years ago on Slush using a USB miner.

Congrats!!!  Makes we want to point my ants at the solo pool and let them rip.  Not like they were earning anything on p2pool anyway

Yep as I said, back not long after I first found out about bitcoin, so I've actually not been around bitcoin for that long compared to some.
That was a few months after BTC first reached $30 and for the rest of the year it went down down down slowly to $2.
I tried to buy 100BTC at the end of the year when it was around $5 ... but SWIFT and banks and fees screwed that up ... heh funny
