First of all, hello, and thank you in advance for putting up with me. If this thread is in the wrong place, I apologize, and I'm sure a mod will be happy to move it to the proper location.

Now, I need a little advice.
I just started (trying) to generate some bitcoins. My GPU is outdated, an ATI Radeon HD 3850. Ive heard that anything before a 4xxx model will do...poorly. I expected this, but i did not expect it to do as poorly as it did. I got a measly, pitiful, pathetic 2250 kHash/sec with this card. My CPU, a quad core Phenom, outperformed this card at 5000 kHash/sec. Im asking you, is there anything i'm doing wrong? Any way I can do better? I'm only trying to generate one, maybe two blocks of coins over several weeks, so i can upgrade my system and begin mining on a larger scale. Any help would be appreciated. Also, and your probably going to laugh at me for this  Roll Eyes I have a few more systems that i can set up as CPU Miners. A dual core Athlon 2.5 Ghz system, a 1.3 Ghz Pentium M system, and a dual 1.4 Ghz PIII System. Electricity is no issue, Im really willing to try whatever I can to get a higher hash rate. And buying a newer GPU, even a used one, is simply not an option at this time.

Once again, thank you very much.  Grin

Don't count on it if you're not going to buy new GPUs.

The fun cards come in the 58XX-series and afterwards. Anything older is total shit.
Example:
My 4850 - 72Mh/s
My 5850 - 345Mh/s

The difference is however not that big between 5850 and 6850.
The 5850 is the most cost-effective card out there today. But at today's rise in difficulty it is unsure whether it will pay for itself.
