It is a common myth that Bitcoin is ruled by a majority of miners. This is not true. Bitcoin miners "vote" on the ordering of transactions, but that's all they do. They can't vote to change the network rules.

BOINC as in Berkeley Open Infrastructure for Network Computing, no.

No, but at least one altcoin (Curecoin) using BOINC as minig method.

Curecoin was a success at launch and become the fastest BOINC network for a while, not sure how it is doing nowadays, I ended up not investing.

Yes, I've remained happy to run BOINC and bitcoind simultaneous, and forget about all the fancy stuff.. integration with the alt-coins.  That keeps it simple and straightforward.  Easy to set up and leave running and know you're always doing what will last.

No it does not use BONIC to the best of my knowledge. I have used BONIC though before. I used to do SETI@HOME.
