OP Last updated: 4th July International Bitcoin Usage Survey English Survey Complete - German, Spanish, Arabic & Finnish coming soonHi all, I'm running a local and international survey for bitcoin usage for http://www.BitcoinsinIreland.com. I have closed off the English language survey now, with the first interim report is at https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=1017295.msg11020556#msg11020556 . I will shortly go through the final data and present a second report. Once that is done, I will then be launching the same survey in the following languages: German, Spanish, Finnish & Arabic (pm if you can help with other languages) What's the survey about? This survey is aimed at people who do and don't use bitcoin across the world to get an understanding of the type of people who use, mine, trade or have a general interest in bitcoin, plus those who've never heard of it before! This survey covers a variety of things in the bitcoin space, and covers nearly 40 questions, but not all have to be answered. What will I get for participating?Optionally, you can put a bitcoin address in. For the English language survey which ran over 3 months, there was 1.00 bitcoin distributed across 3 sets of monthly prizes (0.05 bitcoin each), and a grand prize at the end of 0.25. Proof of payments - https://www.blocktrail.com/BTC/address/1LUD7xavJo1um3toduKCpKu1tcKM4RmgPD/transactionsI will be putting up another 0.25 bitcoin for each of these four languages (another 1.00 bitcoin), which will be split into 5x 0.05 bitcoin prizes, and will update this thread when these surveys go live. How is it internationalMost of the research I've seen has been North American focused. I'm European, from Ireland, and want to see what the case is everywhere else. The initial survey was in English. The same survey has been localised into German, Spanish, Finnish & Arabic, and these will launch when the final report from the English survey is released, to see the differences or similarities. Where can I do the surveyThe English version of the survey is currently closed. German, Spanish, Finnish & Arabic are coming soon. Where can I get more information on the survey and results?Information about the survey is on twitter at http://twitter.com/BTCinIreland under the hashtag #BitcoinSurvey ( https://twitter.com/search?q=%23BitcoinSurvey&src=typd) Want to write an article about #BitcoinSurveyWe've had a great response on twitter, and also across a number of cryptocurrency news sites. If you'd like to be added to our press list for our next announcement, please pm me your details or email jamie [at] bitcoins in ireland [dot] com What will they be? Who knows, have your say today! Questions are welcome, and I've done similar stuff in the video games space, so search "The Games Industry in Ireland 2012" to get an idea how it'll look at the end. Cheers Jamie ==English Survey Results== 267 responses from 64 countriesMap of Survey Participants Gender Distribution

Why the interest in faucets?
It would be more interesting if it had a section about entrepreneurship, many people in the bitcoin ecosystem run some kind of business, from blogs to forums, exchanges, faucet sites, games, it would be nice to have some stats on that.

Hi all, Thanks for the responses, we're up to ten responses already which is great I've put up an image at https://twitter.com/BTCinIreland/status/576744821781618688 to give an idea of the kind of way things will look. I'll need a lot more before it becomes more apparent what people like. And re: faucets, they are one of the main ways that people try to get bitcoin after finding out about it, and as I've come into bitcoin via them to go on to accept bitcoin in my business, invest in hardware (antminers), try cloud hashing etc, and they are unique to bitcoin, I'm very curious to see how prevalent they are! On the entrepreneurship one, there are questions (ie I got my company to use it, I use it in my own business) that can give some of the data, but I'm more interested in hearing how people use it day to day, before delving deeper into that rabbithole ;p

I don't think you should move this to games and rounds. The Bitcoin Discussion forum provides a more well rounded cross section of bitcointalk traffic. Games and rounds will just get you people interested in gambling, which will skew your population, you'll have population bias. Also, this survey has nothing to do with just gambling or games and rounds.

I'll update the OP every so often once I have some volume of data, but the images are certainly helping get some more people filling it in, aside from everyone here filling it in. I am making sure that I get a broad range of inputs, so you might see some advertising (i've only a couple of euro a day going though) with banners or text ads for it, and they're specifically to reach out to people not on talk, and also people who maybe haven't used bitcoin yet

This link is not working for me. Is it related that I am using adblock and it thinks that it is ad link? I do not want to disable my adblock so I will be using other link. I guess others here might get this problem as well, so I am just letting you know that your participants list may be inaccurate because of that.

Nice survey.
How can we get the prize though? Read the OP. Couldn't be easier. ... Because of this, and I really value your input, you can optionally put in a bitcoin wallet address in at the end of the survey. We have three monthly prizes of 0.25 bitcoin in March, April and May, which will be distributed in five prizes of 0.05 bitcoin after we randomly select a wallet address using a suitable web tool. We'll get these picked from the previous month's participants, put up a notice on the site, and send the bitcoin on their merry way across the blockchain, along with some notes on the progress, and any early findings we have. ...

I figured as much with such a technical crowd as is here, and especially a lot of people preferring the anonymity of it using tor, vpn's and all the other things people can use which is why I have the direct link too The survey is up to 26 responses now, and OP is updated with some pics

yep, I am reading them as they're coming in, you're number 55 And yep, I'm reading them all, but will give it a fortnight before I have enough things to start seeing some trends. I'm hoping to get 1000 people doing it by the end of May, and then there'll be a nice meaningful quota on which I can start to pull a lot of stats. And NeuroticFish, I went through the survey a few times before launching it and didn't run into problems. If you missed out putting in a wallet, send me a PM with it so I can note it against that response.

jammers, Try posting on some facebook bitcoin groups and make a reddit post to get more attention. Just one guy doing it! I'm trying to work my way through, got it up on the major linkedin ones, and getting around twitter. next up, facebook (i've found about 60 groups), and then I'll be putting together a PR aimed at the crypto media to try and get the word out a bit more. I just got myself unbanned after several weeks of asking for posting links to the bitcoin writing I'm doing, and don't want to get banned from reddit again :/ But if someone could post the thread link on reddit, it would be appreciated. well depending on this a follow up survey might fill in some blanks. gambling is touchy between cultures but people are usung the space to fill in gaps. ask questions, wait a while for data to come in and I'll cut the data the first week of april. theres a few pics being posted on twitter under #bitcoinsurvey . I get the idea lots of people are trying to figure out bitcoin like south parks underpants gnomes business model i have a gold plated bitcoin and im trying to work out how I could use a message to verify that who I'm talking to is the person who won. ie to post it to a winner. and been told many wallets don't let you sign messages. so if they won they couldnt sign it so that wont work the survey is nearly at 100 when I checked last - 10% of the way to my 1000 goal after about a week and getting a bit of momentum however getting a gender balance to this is probably going to mean paying for facebook ads later :/ cryptomoms posted a link to this thread, so thanks! I thought the gender balance in games was bad at 80/20 from my experience in 12 years in the industry. but so far only 7% are female respondents. so if people have an other half or housemate or family member or work/sport/drinking friend and especially if they dont use bitcoin, get them to fill it in. you'll have an excuse to give them their first wallet address.

well depending on this a follow up survey might fill in some blanks. gambling is touchy between cultures but people are usung the space to fill in gaps. ask questions, wait a while for data to come in and I'll cut the data the first week of april. theres a few pics being posted on twitter under #bitcoinsurvey . To verify, you could have them link to a BCT profile... Or maybe an email

Thanks for the responses, I've updated the OP with a new map and a list of the 44 countries. It's kind of like a reverse jigsaw! There's between 190-200 out there, so nearly a quarter of the way there. Anyone mining in Antarctica? ;p Some countries are getting several responses too now which is great. I'd probably get better responses if I could get it translated, but unfortunately I only speak English :/
Any volunteers to localise the questions? I know it's quite long, but I could probably set up another wallet with something like 0.5 bitcoin in it, and then divvy it up by the people who do translations. pm me if you can help with a particular language! - update, one bitcointalker has offered Dutch, and two of my games friends have offered Polish and German. Sweet ;p

Translation is a good idea. The survey population base will be concentrated in English speaking countries if it is only available in English. Spanish and French will greatly add to the audience because French and Spanish are spoken in many places other than France and Spain respectively.

Thanks for the offer, I have a friend here in Dublin from games who said he'd be able to localise it for me into Spanish, but having someone to proof read it for terminology would be a great idea. I've also a few friends who are French, so definitely, I want to get that language done to. I've also just received a German localisation from another games friend, so just trying to see if I can get different language versions of the same survey, or if I have to clone the survey and run a fresh localised version of it. I'll get a couple of languages together first, and then maybe launch them with the first interim report around Easter. I just checked there, we're up to 113 responses from 47 countries now

I'm going to do a second push now that I've put up https://twitter.com/BTCinIreland/status/581477422039752704 which if people could retweet would be great. The countries so far are in the image below I'm also hoping to have Spanish and German localisations of the survey finished over the weekend, which I can give the links to when I put out an initial report next week, as promised

0.25 bitcoin at https://www.blocktrail.com/BTC/address/1LUD7xavJo1um3toduKCpKu1tcKM4RmgPD gets split into 5x 0.05 prizes for #BitcoinSurvey tomorrow 121 people out of 134 respondants from 51 countries so far put in their bitcoin address, so everyone who participated so far has a 4% chance of getting 0.05 bitcoin worth about €11.38 euro. I know people will ask, so I will export all bitcoin addresses received before midnight GMT tonight in the morning. These will then be dumped into http://www.miniwebtool.com/random-name-picker/ and I'll pick an address. I'll take this out of the list, and repeat it four more times until I have five addresses. Then I'll do a transaction to the five addresses, and post proof of payment here. I have an extra 0.001 in the wallet to cover fees. I'm waiting for my next mining payment to come in, and then I'll transfer in another 0.251 bitcoin into the same wallet, which will set there for people who participate in April. But if you don't win, don't despair. People who didn't win in March will be eligible for the grand prize of 0.25 bitcoin which will be sent when I publish the report at the end of the survey. Thanks to everyone who's participated so far, and if you have friends who don't use bitcoin, i'm equally interested in getting them to participate. OP has also been updated with a new map Cheers Jamie

Hi all, We've gotten some great coverage in the bitcoin media about this, so a big thanks to all the journalists who are helping cover the story. I just wanted to say that I've updated the OP with a link to the wallet, today I send 0.25 bitcoin to cover the responses for April. This will be split five ways, but there's still a single prize of 0.25 bitcoin still up for grabs, so if you don't get a 0.05 prize this month, you're still in the running. Even with all the coverage, I've only gotten an extra 20 responses this month, and that's with doing an ad for a day on /r/bitcoin, some more twitter, and google ads :/ Could any faucet owners let me put an ad in their systems to help get the numbers up (pm me if you can)? But we're up to 56 countries at least! The #BitcoinSurvey is ongoing, and runs up until May 31st 2015. Survey participants in April have a chance of getting one of five 0.05 bitcoin prizes. The link is http://ads.bitcoinsinireland.com/click/0I7UVYDRUI?btcirl=btctalk-0804 if you don't mind us seeing that you came from bitcointalk, and http://bitcoinsinireland.polldaddy.com/s/bitcoins-in-ireland-worldwide-survey-2015 if you want to go directly or are using adblock.

Hi all, I've set up http://www.reddit.com/r/Bitcoin/comments/33prxf/any_german_or_spanish_speaking_bitcoin_fans_able/ and thought I'd post here too, looking for help. Hi all, I'm running #BitcoinSurvey, and last night put the first draft of the German version of the survey at https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=1036324.msg11177783#msg11177783I also have a Spanish translation. I was wondering if anyone can help me proof and edit the localised version so it matches the English version as closely as possible. The main thread is over at https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=987941.0;all , with responses from 60 countries now to the English version. Any help would be appreciated! I'd love to get this into French, Russian, Arabic, Indian, Filipino, and Chinese too as I've a goal of 1,000 responses between them, and think it's important to get as many main languages as possible. But willing to pay 0.05 bitcoin per language. Any one able to do this before the end of the weekend and help me out? Results of the report will be public on my site, bitcointalk and reddit either way. Cheers Jamie

Hi all, Made a big update to the OP. I got locked out somehow from my polldaddy account, but after three weeks and a very helpful developer (thanks Donncha), finally got access to the survey results today. I will now be able to prepare a second interim report based on this data. We also now have access to the Spanish and German localisations we did before, and have also gotten Finnish and Arabic localisations of the survey, to continue trying to reach our quota of 1000 So first up, is the important thing. 0.5 bitcoin for March and April entrants was already sent out, but the May prizes of 5x 0.05 bitcoin are outstanding, as is the 0.25 winner. The bitcoin for these have been sitting for a while at https://www.blocktrail.com/BTC/address/1LUD7xavJo1um3toduKCpKu1tcKM4RmgPDThere were only 15 responses in May, and 13 put in wallet addresses. Winners were picked using http://www.miniwebtool.com/random-name-picker/ removing the winner from the following draw. 1PTqL5M6EUSS6qauNvcBBh8Z8YtLiuQGd4 1MwRfqWgWSUFa4L8FYon3MoKm2EPQcNZqq 1KQtiRVB7x8h7R7aLbHTqAzN4YNv5d8GQf 1NyWsJBzzfDBpLEA4h1JAQtm3v9KQQM9Z 1HAhy2peNsN3wteF34ZEJ53ESpkkBhro71 And now for the grand prize 0.25, all 232 bitcoin addresses for responses to the survey were put in, and the following wins 0.25 bitcoin. Drumroll..... 1M6ELX8c1g95ApJzcYCsGGipsAeYf7RvWN These payments were sent and proof of payment is available for all to see at https://www.blocktrail.com/BTC/tx/cf0ae22ac318bdada6ec9757d4bb3bd724c8aa471bd0bca554a73b1a91ff8483 . One wallet address was invalid, but they put in an email address and I've emailed them so theirs went through https://www.blocktrail.com/BTC/tx/abb36150560fa7b85c574b04a4f0512d53c2a4e13f828ef3b3ce515f6778d079 . So this concludes our promise of distributing one bitcoin to participants in the English survey. Stay tuned for a writeup, and Spanish, German, Finnish & Arabic versions of the survey! Cheers Jamie Editor http://www.BitcoinsInIreland.com
