I'm guessing all of our systems get refined along the way. 

The second message was just signed with a private key that resides in my newer key architecture.

Anyone with access to your account can sign a message with a new address and say the old one is invalid. In order to prove that you are the same person as 10 years ago and not a new owner, you can sign a message with the old address saying that you are changing the signing address to the new address.

Yes, I thought about this very angle.

So I suppose what my signing has done is simply prove that whoever currently holds this Bitcointalk account controls the latter address. 

I am sure if I dig through my records, I would be able to find my way back to the one that I signed with ten years ago.  But I am not sure that I was organized enough back then to think we didn't even end up here.

But I don't really see how the trouble would benefit me enough to be worth it, I guess.

I still have the recording studio that I mentioned in my first post here and it's full of hard drives, archival, not just what I recorded but even some of the old OS drives in case I ever needed to go back. That address is on one of those.  lol.
