The changing of avatars was disabled due to a hack that exploited weaknesses in the security of avatars. Then when the uploading of avatars was reenabled the forum was DDoS'ed within hours of when the April fools joke regarding the avatars was suppose to expire, allowing avatars to work "properly".

It should be obvious as to what happened.

I would in any case expect the mods to make an official statement (apart from the short tweet)

But Avatars are still enabled. I don't think this was the issue else Theymos would have again disabled it after the attack.

Though I've read that there had been some issues to the avatars back then (and it was one of the reasons why the admin disabled adding one) I still can't figure out why users link the re-enabling of avatars to the recent attack that had happened earlier. Huh

Idk if they already found out who was responsible for the recent attack. Seems like the attack is kinda strong it lasted for several hours. Sad

No. But I wonder whether DD4BTC is behind this attack. Lately this entity is extorting from various bitcoin sites and there is a bounty on this DDOS attacker.

As DDos attacks usually happen when a virus has been downloaded or uploaded to the websites but it's not always the case. Earlier it happened because someone uploaded a virus as an avatar which led to the Ddos attack I read about Ddos attacks here: http://www10.org/cdrom/papers/409/

Theymos managed to recover the forum from this attack pretty soon as I have seen cases where it takes weeks to recover if the attack is a big one.

So it means that the cause of the recent DDoS attack came from an uploaded avatar injected with virus? Correct me if I'm wrong because I'm not knowledgeable with such topics. Can you please elaborate further as to how avatars harm the forum and cause a DDoS. i'll also do my own research regarding what you have just said. Smiley

I would in any case expect the mods to make an official statement (apart from the short tweet)

Why should mods make any kind of announcement? Please repeat with me:

MODS ARE NOT ADMINS!
MODS ARE NOT ADMINS!
MODS ARE NOT ADMINS!
MODS ARE NOT ADMINS!
MODS ARE NOT ADMINS!
MODS ARE NOT ADMINS!
MODS ARE NOT ADMINS!

Have you repeated with me? No? Please do.

You should consider reading this to know what's behind the forums being down.
