As a result, these lenders are no longer visible from the homepage, and many newbies will not find them.

What was the motivation for this decision?

I think that the list of long-term lenders is more important than what now remains in the lending forum. These "centralized" lenders and deposit takers offer a way for people to invest and lend with people that the community trusts.

The Bitcoin network protocol was designed to be extremely flexible. It can be used to create timed transactions, escrow transactions, multi-signature transactions, etc. The current features of the client only hint at what will be possible in the future.
