$6 for the movie? I read that the director spent 2 years reasearching and filming it so I think it's a justified purchase.

Just wait a few days and it'll likely be all over warez and torrent sites. I'm interested in watching it but wont be paying for it either. I think the title of the doc is a bit ominous, though.

Finally another documentary that has something to do with bitcoin! The trailer is appealing, though I hope that the movie is also great. Bookmarked for future purposes.

Great trailer it was good enough for me to pay for it and help out this type of production and I know already what I'm going to be watching this weekend, I'm sure we are going to get to see a good amount of articles for this one.

Really, 6 bucks is fair. I don't come down where you work and ask for free big macs why should you get free movies?

Frankly I'm surprised the producers aren't using ascribe.io to distribute it. I guess at this point, as long as people see the movie it's all good. I'll watch this later tonight and tell y'all what I think

Me too, but I think $6 is just a fair amount to pay for a movie, If we want to support bitcoin, then we must also support the people who is continuously pushing bitcoin forward, spreading awareness to the public. Wait a few days and hopefully the documentary will be out on torrent sites.

If we do not support original content and bitcoin adoptation in a store, where does it leave the coins you are so dearly HODLing? If it were a big commercial produced movie from a big corp movie business only putting in remakes of boxoffice hits, then I would say, let them feel the hurt and do not pay, but this is a member of the Bitcoin community, support them please!

Pay up the  BTC 0.02 for this movie, how bad do you want to take BTCitcoin to the moon? Support it, spend it and make it work!

Wow, I am really amazed about all the people who are shouting for a free link. Not that I pay for everything I watch, but I at least don't make it that obvious.
With this film, I am not sure, if I should pay. I just don't like streaming things. Can I download it using Bitcoin?

$6 for the movie? I read that the director spent 2 years reasearching and filming it so I think it's a justified purchase.

a lot more than that was put into Game of Thrones, and yet.....

I recently saw the documentary "IamSatoshi" and it was a good watch, but I usually enjoy more entire lectures without any edits than films. For example id rather watch 1 hour of AAntonopoulos talking about consensus mechanisms. Hope this film is good.

only the bitcoin truly believers(not those that want bitcoin to dump for fiat for sure) and some random delusional nerd

then the fact that you need to pay will make it even worse for someone outside of the niche world of bitcoin, interested to look at it

there is still this bad sentiment sorrounding bitcoin which is really tough to beat for "recall" the masses

True, but even many more millions didn't pay for a subscription to HBO and just download or stream the programs. I think TV or films are likely going to have to get their revenue from other sources eventually as over time people will stop paying for any media or going to the cinema or what not. I'll watch this documentary but with everything else I really can't afford to pay for every tv or movie or album I watch/listen/download.

if they were trying to capitalise on profit they should have done a documentary on something else
even before i heard about this i would have known that a community such as bitcoin  (geeks and hackers and programmers  and scammers etc )
are going to rape my work for free via torrent or any other means they can

i doubt theres a single bitcoin user who doesnt know how to download a movie with utorrent etc so if something is available free ,most will take it for free
and keep their $6 for something less easy to steal ( like a big mac etc )

i am glad its being distributed for free because it helps awareness and adoption which is the overall goal and i will donate some btc anyway simply because of that
but i a not a bit surprised they will make hardly any cash from it since people dont think twice about downloading hollywood blockbusters that cost tens of millions to make
and actually are popular with a mainstream audience,  bitcoin which cannot possibly expect any  more than the latest tarantino movie which is also going to get shared millions of times for free before its even out on dvd etc

It is strange that authors of that documentary did not put it on youtube for everyone. Instead they use pay-per-view sites. Which will undoubtedly make LESS profit for them than Youtube ads would bring.
I would understand this decision if topic was so interesting and mainstream but this is documentary! A Documentary about quite niche world of cryptocurrency, and you need to pay for it? Bad idea.

I don't think it's propaganda. Propaganda has always a negative connotation to it with half-truths, this is a pretty decent documentary.

I am sure they had costs of making this film they need to cover. And, I think, if it helps public adoption of bitcoin and the further understanding of money, they should earn back that at least. However they see fit, YouTube ads, pay-per-view, or otherwise.

Anyway, thanks everyone that has shared links!  :)

We all know you're not going to pay for it. I don't see the difference between asking for a free link and trying to cover up the fact that you may or may not pay for it. If people want it for free let them try watch it for free, for the others let them pay for it.

Good production quality, easy to understand for everyone.

Thanks for the information of the movie, I never heard of it and would have missed it. Now it's safely downloaded - and I will donate money to them if I find it being a quality product.

I don't think it's propaganda. Propaganda has always a negative connotation to it with half-truths, this is a pretty decent documentary.

which is not the same as saying it's untrue.

Hi folks, I'm Ben, production assistant on the doco.

It looks like there's a bit of debate going on about the price of the film and the style of the film. I'll try my best to answer your questions.

When we started this project 2 years ago we ran the initial funding through Kickstarter. We raised 20K and grew our support from the strength of the campaign's success. The rest of the funding came from the Director, Torsten Hoffmann, personally investing a far more than the crowdfunding provided. We understand that for some people, myself included (being a student), $6 can be costly. If this is the case, perhaps after 'acquiring' the film and watching it, based on your enjoyment, you could give us a BTC donation.

We tried to make this as affordable as possible. At the same time we do wish to make a return on the investment. 2 years spent producing a bitcoin doco is certainly enjoyable work, but it's also nice to get paid for it!

Now on the style and quality of the film. From the outset we knew we wanted to make a film for the uninitiated, the newbies, those without a firm grasp on money as it is often misunderstood (money is the root of all evil, money corrupts etc etc). We DID NOT want to make a bitcoin doco for the bitcoiners. If you have been following bitcoin for some time and are familiar with it there's likely nothing in this film about bitcoin that you'll learn. However, there are definitely lessons on money, banks, the Fed and other institutions and technologies that may surprise you. The film attempts to show why bitcoin matters in a historical, economic and political context. We could have approached it from a different angle, showing the potential of blockchain based tech and how it can transform the way we exchange, contract, vote etc. But this would tell the uninitiated little about why bitcoin matters to so many people (the unbanked/underbanked) and what the government (and banks) have done to our money. We think this perspective on bitcoin is due some attention.

Hopefully you all enjoy the film and can participate in wider bitcoin discussion with friends, family and colleagues. Please share the film!

Cheers

Ben

Hey, I appreciate the hard work that went into it, and I paid the $6 to see it, because I can afford it. I was just saying that it would have been better, if it was made availlable for FREE.

 {The community has shown in the past, that they support the people, who support them.... So donations and Tips would have been the better option}

I would have also included Bitcoin payment from the start... Even though this documentary is meant to target non-bitcoiners, most of us bitcoiners wants to download it, to convince other non-bitcoiners around us.

I am happy to pay $6 for this, because I appreciate the contribution this makes to our community.... I am just sad that a big part of poor people, who needs this most, could be excluded from this.

Anyone going to arrange a "group viewing" for this, to bring the poor people or the Greek people into our Bitcoin community?

Wow, we have to pay $5.99 to watch this video so i only watch the trailer.
Then, i searched this documentary and found their kickstarter link : https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/bitcointheendofmoney/bitcoin-the-end-of-money-as-we-know-it/description (https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/bitcointheendofmoney/bitcoin-the-end-of-money-as-we-know-it/description)

Looks promising, but i hope it could be cheaper :)

I feel the same way. If the goal of the video is spreading bitcoin awareness the price seems too high

Read somewhere else that the goal was to reach 100M views, in that case the price is indeed high unless they are considering non-paid views.

If this is the case, perhaps after 'acquiring' the film and watching it, based on your enjoyment, you could give us a BTC donation.

Ben's suggestion is very fair. If you got it through torrent and want to show some appreciation, just donate whatever amount you feel is right.

I figured it would make it's way to the torrents, but I hope the people downloading it, would show their appreciation, by donating to the cause.

Did I miss the info on how much of the budget for this was crowdfunded? $80 000 <-- Was that the production cost or the amount crowdfunded?

Very interesting point of view but I don't think that bitcoin will end the money we use everyday. First I must see the documentary to discuss more concretely but as it is presented seems to fatal. Bitcoin, I think, it will be a good substitute of all the other currencies and good one but not the substitute of any of those. Second there are e few lacks in bitcoin like the electronic form for example (to tell one) that don't allow it to be used like the normal money.

Anyhow I'm curious to see the documentary first.

Good hope. It will be a great thing if this it will be true. But I have my doubts. I can't tell nothing without seeing the documentary but to tell that bitcoin will sign the end of money as it is known it is a big deal and a big declaration. I don't believe this. maybe bitcoin is a revolution but it has its "defects" which cannot be repaired because are embedded on its nature. No one can buy an ice cream with bitcoin and it will be hard to do this in the future.  ;) There is not to many bitcoins to cover the needed money for all the world. And other things.

Anyhow bitcoin is a very big thing. And it is bigger the technology which is under it. This is a big force for him. And for sure it will have a brilliant future ahead of it.

Yeah, it's a pity that TheProtocol.TV only offers the on-demand view, I like to have it on my drive ... therefore I went and bought it on vimeo, used the DECENTRALIZE coupon for discount (unfortunately they don't accept Bitcoins...). Just watched it. It's professionally made and liked it. It's a bit hard to follow in the begging with all the facts about the history of money (would probably need like 10 separate documentaries to explain all about it). I really liked some interesting facts and quotes, some inspiring thoughts. It's also a nice add-on to other documentaries like "The Rise and Rise of Bitcoin" ... go ahead and watch it ;)

Thanks, but you really REALLY need to accept Bitcoin payments. Especially for a piece like this, but in general as well.

It's free, safe, fast, worldwide, instant -- basically there's nothing but benefits from accepting Bitcoin. And if you use a Bitcoin payment processor like coinbase or bitpay you can receive the amount directly in USD (although obviously I would recommend you to keep the BTC instead).

Sorry 'bout that, my bad  ;)

it can help in bitcoin if it will share for free for publicity purpose..
only those who know what bitcoin already is the one who will watch it..
i hoped it will be shared for free someday

I'm sure it will be shared for free someday by the authors. But first we (the ones that we are already aware of Bitcoin importance) have to support the authors of this documentary by aping the small fee for purchasing the video. Then it can be released for free for the masses ... nobody can't make such a professional documentary for free, and thus the authors have to be supported.

The background music is way too loud.  The Director may have spent a lot of time researching it, but the final production sets the quality.

The OP didn't mention if this documentary is aimed at us, or the unconverted?

It's aimed for the clueless public.

Looking at the trailer, I think it's going to be $6 well spent. Cool to see some new Bitcoin documentaries being produced!

Oops, missed that! I stand corrected. Thanks!

Do you know where I can download the movie using BTC?  I'd rather own than rent it, and I want to support the film maker.

This is a great documentary, not only in terms of explaining bitcoin but explaining the history of money which is where convos usually end up going anyway. There's a whole lot of backstory to arrive where we are today with cryptocurrencies and why their important. This movie makes that convo much easier.

Yes, it's a nice introduction to bitcoin and our current financial system, well produced.
Doesn't delve too deep in the technical aspects or ongoing developments

I'd also recommend the book "Digital Gold" by Nathaniel Popper if you want a more in-depth analysis and inside stories behind the rise of bitcoin.
