I was just wondering if you guys could register here at bitcoin and introduce yourselves and tell us why you are here.  No need to lurk.  We have a strong feeling you are reading these forums.

Moderators, please leave this thread up for a day or two.  I just want to see if this thread gets any bites.

I was going to post a witty reply involving pretending to be affiliated with one of those organizations, but then I realized that they probably ARE watching and I'd get v&.

Maybe Jimbobway is part of the FBI, CIA, NSA, or SEC, and is trying to get the trolls v& so that the forum will be a better place. I tip my tinfoil hat to you, good sir.

Instead, everybody who doesn't work for the FBI, CIA, NSA or SEC should say so.

On a forum in our country a reporter was lurking and did a story on one of the users about something. So it is possible.

There are already government employees with ties to the agencies you listed (but not employees) on the forums and they regularly post. You'll never get a confirmation directly from a federal agent that they are a federal agent because they aren't allowed to do so. FBI agents aren't allowed to have Facebook accounts and NSA agents are required to sign an agreement to let the government tap their phone as a condition of employment and have similar restrictions.

EDIT: Sorry, I should specify you won't get a confirmation from a federal agent in a public sphere, you might get one person-to-person.

I cannot confirm or deny, past employment due to NDA's.

Plus also your forgetting the most crypto-involved foreign government agency in your list. "The Institute"

Anyone currently holding a clearance cannot, or are strongly advised against revealing such in a public forum. Many will list it on their resume but they are told they should not do so.

Having a clearance means that you get to do what other companies have outsourced but get paid like people did before their jobs were outsourced.

As for what those agencies would likely be doing as far as Bitcoins go...they would likely be paying more attention to the actual code and checking for flaws or ways to use it to track what they need to track.

There was another thread which posted a job listing down here at MacDill AFB which was seeking an analyst with some financial background as well as knowledge of Bitcoin and Second Life currency. It also wanted someone who spoke some Arab language. This means that they would like to see how those in the middle east are moving money around. Or maybe they have already determined it and need to track it.

I do not work directly for any of the agencies you listed.

In the unlikely event that an employee of one of these agencies decided it was time to stop lurking, register, and post in this thread, they wouldn't be able to until after they got out of the newbie area.

If you are really serious, you'll want to move this thread to the newbie forum.

A SCIF is a "Sensitive Compartmented Information Facility", in my case it was an underground compound where military intelligence of all branches went to work alongside contractors.

TS = Top Secret

SCI = Secret Compartmented Information - Been awhile but basically I remember this being explained as an access control system where the information is compartmentalized so that fewer people have access to the big picture.  That way likely multiple sources would need to be compromised to get a full top down view of the project or whatever.

Here is a declassified description of my job title and duties: http://usmilitary.about.com/od/airforceenlistedjobs/a/afjob1n2x1.htm

I will say this... it wasn't as exciting as it sounded when I enlisted by a long shot.

Hello, you are correct. We are reading these forums, and many of us have already been registered for quite some time. Many of us are here just to play around with some BTC personally, and a few to monitor the situation. Just kidding, the U.S gov anyway has very little interest in Bitcoins or your play money scams. The people who are saying OH NO! The $10,000 drug market is going to ruin BTC! Eh, no. Why chase people back and forth and waste the energy and resources, when we could just sit at the U.S boarders, and snag over $60 Million in drugs per day? I will say, a lot of Gov employees use Bitcoins, not to launder or anything, just because a large majority of them are techy, and bitcoins are interesting and useful for techy stuff.

Not entirely kidding,

SaltySpitoon

The only thing i would expect in this area is some sort of provocation to members who are investigated for any reason to reveal more personal information which could lead to a real identity.
There is no reason for any autorithy to give a statements or comment on anything in here, the only comment id expect is another fbi report on the current state of bitcoin as the last report.

At least here in the U.S. cops are allowed to lie to you. That's pretty well known.

As far as "spot the fed", a few years ago at PorcFest there was a guy that just didn't seem to fit in and a few of the folks decided he must be a fed. He got followed around and it seemed to me to be blown out of proportion. The next year there were people walking around with t-shirts that said "I'm a fed" on the front and "Don't you wish it was that easy?" on the back.

One friend of mine suggested that if they really wanted to infiltrate a group like that (largely male and geeky) the best thing to do would be to send in a young female.

The only female here that ever got my attention was the one that showed her vagina to everyone willing enough to send her bitcoins. if government agents were to run tactics like that, I'd consider them part of the movement rather than infiltrators.

Not when it comes to three letter government agencies.  Anyone with the skill to pentest them wouldn't be risking the trouble it could bring when they could contact the organizations and get paid a lot of money to do it with permission.

You are wrong. If it's true that SilkRoad holds some half million in BTC and Bitcoin were to gain traction and take off publicly they'd be holding a significant portion of the global capital available. And that would eventually make them one of the most powerful entities in the world.
I think it's naive to believe the government has no real interest in Bitcoin, they are no stupider than me or some other folks who saw the true potential in the very beginning. My guess is they're either in high alert mode and have been for a long time (only you don't really see or hear any of it) or they are shitting bricks. Or both.

Or they're joining in on the business.

Being a government employee like you say doesn't mean you know what the government is really doing. After all, you're just an employee.

I have had to sign NDA's for secure work involving the military. I can't tell you what for, but I can say that not every secret is sexy. Whoever really buys toilet paper at Langley would get canned for saying what brand they use, even though no one cares.
It was put to me this way: The new paradigm is; "I could tell you, but I would have to sue you."

Not all companies will make you sign NDAs like the government, but most will have policies in place barring employee's from disclosing such information.  One big reason for this is social engineering.  Once you've gained enough information about an organization, even if it seems like it is insignificant, this can be used to gain more information from employees and managers.  Simply calling up and pretending to be a janitorial supply company verifying an "order" or other information, you can gather email address', usernames, staffing times, the possibilities are limitless, then you call later from another "company" if need be to gather further information.

Here's a fun one for ya. The CIA invites Gavin to speak, then within 4 months the Silk Road appears. I'm the original person to suggest that Bitcoin would be great for CIA agents to get money to agents (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=6652.msg97439#msg97439), but they'd need to "clean" their coin just as those who avoid the FBI, ATF, and DEA ire would need to. Intelligence agencies aren't exactly buddy-buddy, even after the Department of Homeland Security. Also, governments aren't necessarily the problem, it's always ultimately been the banking industry. Though I would argue that while the Drug War exists, a lot of good people are getting hurt for stupid reasons.

Though I would argue that while the Drug War exists, a lot of good people are getting hurt for stupid reasons.

Yeah, the CIA is so independent it's pretty much running a show of its own. Although they do control many state governments behind the scenes. Ask Jesse Ventura about his CIA interrogations as Governor.

A nice little song....  ;D

I moved out to Langley recently
With a plain and simple dream;
Wanna infiltrate some third-world place
And topple their regime.

Those men in black with their matching suitcases;
Where everything's on a need-to-know basis;
Agents got that swagger;
Everyone's so cloak and dagger.

I'm feelin' nervous but I'm really kinda wishing
For an undercover mission

That's when the red alert came on the radio
And I put my earpiece on!
Got my dark sunglasses on!
And I had my weapon drawn!

So I get my handcuffs,
My cyanide pills,
My classified dossier!

Tappin' the phones like yeah, shreddin' the files like yeah,
Memorized all the enemy spies I've got to neutralize today.

Yeeeaaahhh, it's a party in the CIA!
Yeeeaaahhh, it's a party in the CIA!

I've done a couple of crazy things that have almost gotten me dismissed,
Like terminate some head of state who wasn't even on my list.

Burn that microfilm buddy, will you,
I'd tell you why but then I'd have to kill you!

You need a quickie confession?
Well, start a waterboardin' session!

No hurry on this south American dictator
I'll assassinate him later
That's when he walked right in my laser sights,
And my silencer was on,
And my silencer was on,
And another target's gone!

Yeah, we've got our black ops all over the world, from Kazakhstan to Bombay;
Payin' the bribes like yeah, pluggin' the leaks like yeah;
Interrogating the scum of the earth, we'll break them by the break of day!

Yeeeaaahhh, it's a party in the CIA!
Yeeeaaahhh, it's a party in the CIA!

Need a country destabilized?
Look no further, we're your guys!
We've got snazzy suits and ties,
And a better dental plan than the FBI's!

Better put your hands up and get in the van,
Or else you'll get blown away!
Stagin' a coup like yeah,
Brainwashin' moles like yeah,
We only torture the folks we don't like,
You're probably gonna be OK!

Yeeeaaahhh, it's a party in the CIA!
Yeeeaaahhh, it's a party in the CIA!
