Title: US Presidential Candidate Rick Perry Reveals Bitcoin Stance
Post by: OmegaStarScream on July 30, 2015, 10:54:15 AM
US presidential candidate Rick Perry has stated he supports "regulatory breathing room" for digital currencies such as bitcoin.

The comments came during a new interview with The New York Observer that found Perry elaborating on issues that could form the core of his fiscal policy.

In the interview, Perry roundly denounced perceived issues in the financial system, stating:

"“Wall Street should not be left off the hook for their bad behavior … instead of them being punished, it was the average American who paid the tremendous price. The fact of the matter is, to be quite frank: we got screwed."

It's always nice to see big and known people involved in politics speak about Bitcoin in public ;D we need trump to invest in BTC now  ::)

His stance should give him a few hardcore bitcoiner support, but I guess it will not give him a lot of extra support by this statement alone.

Maybe his general stance on wall street has a bigger impact though.

Very nice to have some support from higher up :)

Interesting...  I would not expect Gov Perry to take a stance such as this, perhaps perception/awareness of crypo-currencies is greater than I thought.

The Texas governor position is more of an ambassador role and has no real power so they just put up empty suits with a southern drawl and who can act like a cowboy.

Any success Texas had while he was governor had more to do with the price of oil going up to around $150 per barrel while he was governor than anything he did. His getting paid by Merk to force teenage girls to get vaccinated for a specific strain of STD (that they later discovered causes cancer) is about as much as he ever did as governor.

Not worried about him becoming president anyway. His mouth will make sure that doesn't happen (same with Trump).

It's nice to see us getting mentioned by the high ranks. We need every bit of help to get this beautiful technology mainstream!

Too bad Rick Perry won't have a chance to become a president. I really liked this statement. This guy is too straightforward (the same as Trump) and he is not necessarily king of the political correctness.
Candidates are looking supporters on every possible field, even couple thousands/millions of bitcoin enthusiasts can change something. I still think his opinion is more like publicity stunt.

The Texas governor has no real power?

Where do you get this from?  Please explain.

Um....that doesn't make sense given the history.  Bitcoin has been said by Perry and Abbot to not need any regulation, the complete reverse of places like New York.

I confess to not being able to specifically prove that this was advocated by Perry, Abbot, both, or perhaps just the general atmosphere in Texas.   But even so if Perry reflects that general atmosphere, that's different than assuming his opinion on bitcoin is the bullshit of a politician....

Now the Governor's powers are limited to appointments to over 200 boards and commissions in Texas (approximately 3000 positions), mobilization of the Texas National Guard and Texas Rangers, and the line item veto.  Just about every other office besides the board and commissions are elected by the People. The Governor has to be a very good persuader to get the Legislature (the law making and budgetary authority) to do what he wants, but he has no formal power over them.

http://kut.org/post/why-lieutenant-governor-most-powerful-office-texas-and-who-wants-power
Most power lies with the Lieutenant governor:
Quote
First up, the lieutenant governor gets to be governor if the governor dies and even if the governor just leaves the state for a few days.
"The lieutenant governor appoints all the committee chairs of the committees in the Senate, determines where the bills are going to be sent and to what committees and the timing. And so this is extremely powerful,"
every bill has to come through a Senate Committee before it gets a final vote. Getting passed by the Senate is tough enough. But it's impossible if your bill never gets out of committee. Which makes the Lt. Governor's power to pick where to send a bill very important.
he can always send it over here you know to [the] State Affairs [committee] where he's stacked it with his friends, instead of over to say, [the] Health and Human Services [committee], where maybe he doesn't have as many friends,
The lieutenant governor still has power over a bill even if it makes it out of committee. They decide when a bill comes up for a vote, and when to recognize a senator for any floor action.

Got it.  So it's not "no real power" but "less power than many states" give their Governors.

And you don't like stuff he with his  "no real power"...

Rick Perry has the same stance as Greg Abbot (current governor of texas) and Abbot is currently accepting bitcoin donations.
Rand Paul accepts bitcoins as well, and since he is always top 5, he will be our biggest chance as the "bitcoin" candidate

Well I do know that Perry would do about as well as president as the last Texas governor turned president.

And they are both about as intelligent.

But what I don't get is like, these guys and this state is bitcoin friendly, why not give them credit for that?

Even with a "yeah, BUT..."

Perry is only bitcoin friendly as long as his handlers tell him he is bitcoin friendly. I would not put too much faith in any words coming out of his mouth.

Well, you could equally say that of any politician.  Fact is, you've got one here that's bitcoin friendly.

Hate him all you want, that is what it is.  By the way I agree with you that we can't create a cause and effect model of the success of Texas using Perry as causation.  There are many factors at work and he may reflect them, more than being a single cause.

Regardless, here is a factoid for your liberalbrain.

Uhaul truck rental FROM Texas to LA - $500
Uhaul truck rental TO Texas from LA - $1500

This guy is to candid to have power.  He needs to learn the backhand doublespeak like Nancy Pelosi.  She opens her mouth and the intelligence in the room is sucked into a void.

Strange that you think I'm a liberal just because I know Perry is an empty shell/puppet.

I don't hate him, I know that he has no chance of becoming president so he really does not matter. That's why I don't see his stance on Bitcoin as that big of a deal. Other than the fact that him talking about Bitcoin would probably hugely misrepresent it to people who listen to him and hear about Bitcoin for the first time.

<<blah blah blah>>

It does seem you are incapable of making a single sentence without insulting oppositional politicals.  That's rather tedious and a waste of my time, when the subject is one endorsing bitcoin.  I do have an opinion that bitcoin needs diverse support and does not belong on one side of any political spectrum.

Oh, by the way, LBJ had exactly the same kinds of insults as you offer Perry, and Bush.  Meanwhile people from CA, NJ and NY keep coming to Texas.

Have a nice day!

That's supposed to be an endorsement? Some "breathing room"?

I like Texas, I lived there while Perry was governor. I was even a Republican delegate at the state convention in 2008. I would probably live in Texas if I came back to the US. But Perry is about as fake of a politician as you can get.

Okay.

Let's just note that I do believe Perry has had a hand in the current and projected favorable climate for bitcoin in Texas.  As does Abbot, and other individuals and entities.  Which is night and day compared to some other states, such as New York.  And I'm not even interested in the "Perry for President" thing, can't get serious about it.

Interesting...  I would not expect Gov Perry to take a stance such as this, perhaps perception/awareness of crypo-currencies is greater than I thought.

Let's be honest here, this is not a stance...he said "I'll support regulatory breathing room" which means he wouldn't actively pursue or make a priority (of his administration) writing regulations around bitcoin use. This isn't much. He's not saying he believes in bitcoin or even that he understands what it is. He's just saying "it's not a priority".

Let's not give him too much credit. He's a conservative, which means less regulation for business and industry. Hopefully bitcoin is allowed to mature and be used with minimal regulation...only time will tell.

Tell you what, lets turn that logic upside down.  Go ahead, vote in another bunch of Totalitarian Fascist Authoritarian Controllers from the Democrat side, which means more regulation.  But don't come bitching and complaining about the severe restrictions of then resulting strangulation-through-regulation-to-death of bitcoin.
