Title: Bitcoin: The End of Money as We Know It | Full Movie
Post by: GermanGiant on August 02, 2015, 11:09:08 PM
Just stumbled upon it. Watch now... before it is taken down.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-weYwiDOSeg

Hi folks, I'm Ben, production assistant on the doco.

It looks like there's a bit of debate going on about the price of the film and the style of the film. I'll try my best to answer your questions.

When we started this project 2 years ago we ran the initial funding through Kickstarter. We raised 20K and grew our support from the strength of the campaign's success. The rest of the funding came from the Director, Torsten Hoffmann, personally investing a far more than the crowdfunding provided. We understand that for some people, myself included (being a student), $6 can be costly. If this is the case, perhaps after 'acquiring' the film and watching it, based on your enjoyment, you could give us a BTC donation.

We tried to make this as affordable as possible. At the same time we do wish to make a return on the investment. 2 years spent producing a bitcoin doco is certainly enjoyable work, but it's also nice to get paid for it!

Now on the style and quality of the film. From the outset we knew we wanted to make a film for the uninitiated, the newbies, those without a firm grasp on money as it is often misunderstood (money is the root of all evil, money corrupts etc etc). We DID NOT want to make a bitcoin doco for the bitcoiners. If you have been following bitcoin for some time and are familiar with it there's likely nothing in this film about bitcoin that you'll learn. However, there are definitely lessons on money, banks, the Fed and other institutions and technologies that may surprise you. The film attempts to show why bitcoin matters in a historical, economic and political context. We could have approached it from a different angle, showing the potential of blockchain based tech and how it can transform the way we exchange, contract, vote etc. But this would tell the uninitiated little about why bitcoin matters to so many people (the unbanked/underbanked) and what the government (and banks) have done to our money. We think this perspective on bitcoin is due some attention.

Hopefully you all enjoy the film and can participate in wider bitcoin discussion with friends, family and colleagues. Please share the film!

Cheers

Ben

Yes, it is new.
The production quality is quite standard TV-level documentary IMO. Like something you would see on History Channel?
I personally thought the narration style was a bit too close to those of Conspiracy Theory documentaries, but it was not bad.
The content is good. Lots of history. No hiperbole about Bitcoin - quite level-headed.
Some funny / light-hearted moments towards the end.
A couple of the choices of interviewees are debatable.

Worth a watch, no doubt.

Sidenote: I would love to see it subtitled / dubbed in many languages.

It'll be taken down because it was just released (in July) and was available for viewing at the Producer's website for $5.99 (accepting bitcoin only of course). The YouTube version is pirated!

Official Link to the movie: https://video.popchest.com/videos/embedded/176

Link to the producer's website: http://theendofmoneyasweknowit.com/

Leave reviews here at IMDb: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt4654844/

If you plan to watch the YouTube link version, the pirated version, be a good sport and float these guys a decent tip equal to the value you gained from the education and entertainment. And then tell a friend about it and give them the Official Link above so they can pay the full, yet very fair price.

If you believe that the fiat currency system and banks have an unfair advantage, don't steal from the people who are trying to bring awareness to that unfair advantage.

Thank you for the legit links to the movie.  I will have to check it out, and the price is not too bad.  I hope that they take bitcoins?  It would be strange if they did not!

The production cost was +/- $80 000 and it was crowdfunded by the Bitcoin community. Let's not pirate stuff from our own community guys and gals.

I feel they concentrated a bit too much on the history of money and not enough on the difference Bitcoin can bring to solve some interresting problems currently in the financial world.

This documentary is screaming for a follow up.... Part 2 : Cash is trash, Bitcoin is King ......to be continued.  8)

so they released it for free, i remember it was available for $5 or 6, i think it's better for them if they can partner with youtube and gain on the viewers instead of charging money for it

cool movie nonetheless

No they did not. Have a look at the comments. The first one is from Torsten. He is not happy about that at all.
But what shall he do? It's already available on torrents. And the more often the video gets deleted at youtube, the more often it will be uploaded.
Furthermore I agree. His distribution model could have been better.

Worthwhile documentary. They have some good shots. It's a shame that they're charging for it particularly as a lot of the footage was donated to them by various people on youtube. So it's disappointing that in turn they charge and they could've instead opted for their own youtube channel for revenue.

Well worth a watch and consider donating for sure :)

Yeah, if the point is making Bitcoin more known the Documentary should be free and the money would come from advertisement revenue from Youtube adsense or whatever. By charging you just guarantee that few people see it compared to the ad alternative.

I don't think it is charging to watch it though is it? I just watched it for free. If you watch it to the end it asks for donations if you liked the film. Strangely though, it doesn't give a link or a QR code.

It is a pirated copy. Hence, if they are asking for donation at the end, it is not going to the actual producer/director.

What is the production quality like?
Thanks for the link I will have to check it out later.

i watched it the other night.. its definetly as described above.. teaching people all about how money works and how fiat has failed us, and does it in normal conversation form. (no geek speak).

so it wont baffle you with science but is a good intro to economics and bitcoin. even i would be willing to tell noobs i know to watch it. as its not a blatant bitcoin advert. it shows the principles of the whole economy and why bitcoin is a better economic system. without going into any of the profitability stuff.

But the problem is people or at least average joes don't perceive that "fiat has failed on them". As long as people keep their salaries so they can buy bullshit on malls i don't see the necessity of BTC for them. The true potential of BTC is in less obvious ways and in developing countries.

People with white collar job wont feel the need of bitcoin till they feel stressed by tax burden or locked by capital control.

honestly giving it more exposure on youtube might even increase sales. If it was really well made, anyway.

I think it's impossible to profit from digital content anymore beyond ad revenue and donations. People are always going to pirate your stuff, it just too easy nowadays and people are too poor in general to spend money in anything that isn't 100% necessary. Unfortunately this is a fact and it is what it is. Most musicians make all the money from live events because people are pirating their music except the real fans.

It is a complete joke trying to sell documentaries in the first place, and he raised the funds from what I understand.. So being upset about it being uploaded on youtube is just ridiculous, this helps the Bitcoin economy, but hurts it by trying to take the video down.

I guess some people really are just in it for the money/greed when it comes to Bitcoin, even when they were given free money to create this documentary.

Very sad.  ::)
