blockchain.info is the best online/hot wallet imo. It's noob friendly & fine for storing small amounts. Make sure you use a complex password & use 2 factor authentication. There are others but blockchain.info is the most popular for a reason. Just make sure your computer is clean. Store large amounts of bitcoin on Bitcoin Core or in cold storage but you know this anyway if you do your research.

https://bitcoin.org/en/choose-your-wallet here you can choose from a lot of web wallets, however thats pretty strange that there is no blockchain wallet provided there, any information why?

blockchain.info is actually the best in my opinion , it was the first I started with when I was getting my bitcoins since Bitcoin Core was taking too much time to Sync and I didn't knew about the other wallets .
but blockchain.info have their problems now , maybe try something like Coinbase . it could do the job too

Personally I like Coinbase, I've been using them for a long time and I've never had any problems. I'm happy with their level of protection. They will normally let you know the minute there is a login attempt from a device they don't recognize (I think this is a standard feature these days though and blockchain probably does the same thing). They also have a feature called the Vault where you can store large amounts of Bitcoin offline for added security. On top of this they are insured. Also worth mentioning, (although I've heard people say otherwise) I've personally never been charged transaction fees when moving BTC out of my Coinbase account which I think is pretty cool  :)

EDIT - Any device that is being used for the first time to access your account needs to be authorized (using secondary email and 2FA) before it can used.

if you will actually use it only for hot wallet funds then i think blockchain or greenaddress really fits you, it doesnt require any skills and its really easy to use it

They service is often have a bug with some people who lost coins or suddenly the coins moved to another wallet, and recently their block explorer have a bug come from satoshi address. That's why bitcoin.org has been removed from their list. I've been skeptic too use bc.i

i use the blockchain.info wallet for nearly 6 months now, and i have to say it's much better than the other wallets i have tried. blockchain.info wallet gives me a good secure feeling which i didn't had with other wallets. but never keep all your coins online. just keep small amounts in it like you would with your physical wallet.

Yeah, with BC's issues as of late, I'd use something else. Its API is even a little wonky now, giving errors even when things were successfully sent.

As to OP, I personally prefer Coinbase (storage) or Xapo, and HaoBTC for growth (savings).

If you have to use an online wallet the best is the myTREZOR Web Wallet (https://mytrezor.com/#/) used with the Trezor (http://www.bitcointrezor.com/) device to hold your private keys and sign transactions.

Blockchain is ok and has many features but there has been a few problems on the past that concerned me enough that i changed my online wallet.

I now have 7 different wallet apps on my phone and find Wallet32 good for a HD wallet but it doesn't have a option to sign a BTC address so that sux.
I have also used greenaddress and that is ok, maybe a bit slow sometimes.,Coinbase and Coinjar are good too but because you dont hold the private keys to these wallets then i only use them to buy/sell and reload my Coinjar swipe card.

Any coins i have are alway kept offline on a paper wallet that i make with a Mycelium entropy, so easy to use.
Because of my cold storage i almost always use Mycelium wallet now as it has everything i need and pairs great with my cold storage and will also now pair with Trezor.
I would say the Mycelium is the best wallet, noob friendly and got everything you need.

Whatever wallet you go with never leave more thn you can afford to loose online because anyone can get hacked., and also use 2fa always!
Welcome to bitcoin, ask anything you need to know, there is a lot of helpful members here.  :)

Good question but there isn't one good answer, it really depends on you.

Here's a site to help you summarize the differences in features and in making a decision: https://bitcoin.org/en/choose-your-wallet

Good luck to you.

Yes, they give a sign up bonus for email verification, but the amount is depends on your country.
Coinbase is pretty good, but the money controlled by a third party, so don't store big amount and don't keep for long time.

For online wallets I would have to say Xapo is a pretty good wallet. You login with your email and password. You can also enable 2 step verification for additional security. It stores your bitcoins in "cold storage" which keeps your funds safe. check it out.

Why not just keep your bitcoins in your own paper wallet cold storage?
Thats what i do.
Do you even get access to the private keys for 'your' btc being stored?

Im sure Xapo say they are keeping your cold storage in safety deposit boxes or a vault/safe but how do you know that? Coinbase says they keep your "vault" funds on paper in a bank vault but who's to know that dont just say that and to save money they really just have all them paper wallets in the CEO's desk draw, im pretty sure that dosen't happen but you never really know.

I admit these companies are great for buying coins and also for anyone starting off and still learning but it's not really what bitcoin is about.
These companies are almost like bitcoin banks, they say they will keep your funds safe so you dont have to worry, who knows they may even offer some type of insurance against hacks in the future if they don't already.

I'm not sure blockchain.info is a safe wallet anymore. There were a lot of threads this year about people losing their btc and other problems.

Coinbase seems decent for small amounts. They have a cold storage type of feature and they do insure amounts over $500.

Always use 2FA.

Blockchain.info has been having almost the same problem for awhile now. Check the date on this thread:
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=271486.msg2907468#msg2907468

And then look into the problem johoe advised us to not so long back:
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=581411.0

This should have all been fixed now but by memory it wasn't just blockchain, electrum and another also had a simular problem.
I understand this can be easily fixed at the users end by always using a different address per transaction.

Still nothing beats a paper wallet if created correctly. Keep about 0.2btc on one leave it in your wallet like cash and if you ever need it just wip it out, scan that private key and you got ya bitcoin.

Definitely stay away from blockchain.info. The wallet worked fine years ago, but the software has not been updated and it has been revealed that the site has a ton of security issues. Web wallets are never too secure, but if you must use one, still stay away from blockchain.info.

You can start with Blockchain.info wallet but when you learn basics about Bitcoin setup Bitcoin Core in your pc. You need to keep your private keys safe, you can't trust a 3rd party site with all your money.

but if you want to have an online wallet, you can try blockchain.info or Coinbase but all of them will have different sorts of problems associated with them.

circle, coinbase, xapo, blockchain...you can use any online wallet you want.

anyway, honestly I never find out a reason why to use online wallet if you can use light wallet like mycelium on smartphone/tablet and light client like electrum on desktop. maybe I;m just conservative or something, but what leads people to use web-based online services for handling bitcoin? they are lazy or something?

Instead of using an online wallet, download a lightweight local wallet, like electrum.  That way, your bitcoins would not be lost if an online wallet site were to go down.

Yes Coinbase is primarily an exchange but their wallet can pretty much be considered a stand-alone service. If I'm not mistaken there are currently less than 30 countries that can access the exchange itself. Rather than alienating the rest of the world while they work to enable trading in more places, they encourage people from all over the world to create wallet accounts with them by making the vault feature and insurance available to everyone.

I have been thinking about this and true anwser is no online wallet is the best.  All online ones have risks that cold wallets do not.

Some online wallets are needed for small spending, so I agree there is a need.  Keep with well known and tested online wallets is best advice.  Look for one with a long history, and a good history.

If the offer anything such as interest or something to good to be true then stay away it is a scam.  I have not seen a interest ponzi in a while on wallets, so I suppose that is good.

coinbase is not recommanded at all yes they have some features and fancy looks but sometime they put hold on your account and ask for documents to remove the hold you dont have to tell your name address etc to use bitcoins this is the purpose of the coin not anymore with the coinbase

yep coinbase doesnt support gambling that is why if they trace your coins that came from a gambling site specially those popular gambling sites, your account will be put on hold and there is a chance that you wont get your bitcoins back

You will not take much time to learn blockchain's feature since their interface are simple and user friendly
and how about all those tellings about the people who lost their coins because of their security holes? arent you afraid of holding your money there?

I found something interesting guys. A new wallet called Coinkite It is somewhat similar to Coinbase,
in that it provides plenty of Bitcoin-related services such as Bitcoin debit cards and payment terminals alongside an online wallet feature.
Coinkite uses BIP32 Hierarchical Deterministic (HD) wallets, which are stored in a custom Hardware Security Module (HSM) that is apparently isolated from the Internet.
You can even request audit reports from Coinkite. What is interesting in the case of closure or failure,
Coinkite has promised that it will publicize a symmetric key that contains all the extended private keys that have been distributed to Coinkite users.
This will allow users to reclaim their funds from Coinkite, if the service shuts down. On the paper Coinkite's features are top notch and very fashion forward.

Mobile App
2FA

This is nice features of online Bitcoin wallet, if they have an extention for Mozilla it will bring more people to use it, this time to use other online bitcoin wallet than blockchain :P :D

I still find that blockchain.info is preferable to a 3rd party wallet like Coinbase, where you don't actually control your private keys. Having said that, I still don't like using an online wallet that is vulnerable to JS script attacks, not to mention all of blockchain.info's bugs. For a quick and easy desktop solution that is very light, memory-wise, I use Electrum.

May I try and talk you out of the using online wallets for your bitcoins?
When using online wallets, you are pretty much using third party with your money, something like you are doing in the old financial system by taking your savings and puting it into a bank.

Bitcoin has finally let people worldwide to be its own bank so use it. There are many wallets in Bitcoin, try Multibit or Electrum, it is easy to use and to back up your funds!

I agree with the sentiment here. But there should be some distinction made between an online wallet like blockchain.info and a 3rd party wallet like Coinbase. On blockchain.info, you actually are the sole holder of your private keys -- you are simply vulnerable to other attacks that make desktop wallets much more secure.

I like coinbase. It was one of the best.
coinbase isnt a webwallet, its an exchange.

as long as you can store bitcoins there it is still considered a web wallet IMO
and if you don't control your own private keys, I don't consider it a wallet. the point of a wallet is to have control over your own money, using coinbase as a wallet means you're giving control of your money over to them and being completely dependant on them to send your coins for you.

Indeed.... unfortunately many, many people used Gox as a "wallet"..... and that is still the prime example in bitcoin's history of what it means to control your private keys. Incredible, really, the amount of value that people were willing to let an unregulated 3rd party control.

Having said that, Coinbase =/= Gox, but the point remains.

To tell what is the best wallet must have in consideration to many factors. But for me the best bitcoin wallet is coinbase. Even is a bitcoin wallet which is a web wallet and the bitcoins are not in your hands but in the hands of the third parts.

I heard that coinbase not allow trancsaction to the gambling site, isn't it?
please correct me if iam wrong
coinbase also tracks how you spend your coins, and im not exactly too welcome of unwelcome people investigating where i spend my money. coinbase isnt a wallet, its an exchange that you can have your money stored in.

Everybody should stay away from Coinbase. Coinbase is a cancer of Bitcoin ecosystem in my opinion. They are blocking the transactions, they are spying on you where you are sending and how you are spending your Bitcoins. They require huge amount of personal info, like no other exchange or wallet. I don't know what are they trying to do, are they trying to become closer to the US government and gain some advantage in this way, I don't know, but they are working in my opinion, against what Bitcoin stands to do, a privacy and decentralization.

If we don't allow licensed businesses, the U.S. will just block all U.S. exchanges, effectively limiting Bitcoin's usage within the country. People like to think it can be evaded, but it simply can't. They can easily force all banks to become Bitcoin-hostile, making it to where you either trade in person or not at all.

They could do that, sure, but would it make sense for them to do that? I'm not so sure. Just playing devil's advocate here, really, but I see this thrown around a lot, and I'm not sure it makes sense. It's pretty clear that bitcoin isn't primarily for drug dealing or money laundering -- although anything fungible and of value could serve those purposes. And it's pretty clear it isn't going away, either (Gemini, Nasdaq, Swedish ETN, GBTC, etc). The feds may already realize that to try at this point to squash out bitcoin will only drive a new and potentially booming industry offshore.

blockchain.info is the best online/hot wallet imo.

Thanks for the info mate )

Cash isn't primarily for illicit activities, either, but look at how they're locking that down. I can't deposit $1 into my bank anymore without letting them scan in an active driver's license (if it's expired, they will decline the deposit). You carry $1k in cash and get pulled over, even just for a routine stop, and you can have it confiscated and have every bank account/all your other assets frozen for years on end while you fight it in court. This isn't a theory -- this is happening every single day. To think that they would magically treat Bitcoin different, even when they're doing this to fiat, which has been around well over 100 years, is asinine.

A guy in Texas got arrested because he sold his car for cash (IIRC it was $13k). Why was he arrested? He didn't collect and submit AML/KYC documentation and do a background check on the buyer. Was he a business? No. He was an individual. But the simple fact that it dealt with more than $10k and he didn't force the buyer to submit documentation to him so he could send it to the IRS makes him a criminal.

Yeah, I get all that, and it's upsetting and all, but it doesn't really address what was said. The problem with cash is it isn't traceable. They'd prefer it be restricted to electronic means. This is only another reason why the federal government is less likely to become hostile to bitcoin -- it's easy to track, fully public.

They aren't really for mixing Bitcoins or even storing any coins in the first place for the following reasons.
1. They keep logs and they are a registered buisness and are obligated to give out any personal information when asked for by the government.
2. For storage, they aren't the best choice. Even though they may be quite safe if they store their coins in their cold storage, things can still happen if an exploit is found or someone does an inside job.

Could you clarify what are you talking about when saying that it has shared address? AFAIK, it does generate multisig addresses and allows users to set a limit thus reducing the impact if a hack is to happen. I can't say that they are reliable. I have lost Bitcoin due to a glitch that happened while enabling 2FA on my phone.

I love Coinbase: Unlimited addresses, vaults, receive payments in bitcoin using fiat as reference and, they are already integrated in many places (buy with only one click, literally). Also, if you live in a mainstream country you can probably buy btc directly from them (near to market price, unlike localbitcoins or other sites).

Unlimited addresses? You can get that with any wallet that you control, rather than some 3rd party. Blockchain.info and probably others allow you to send referencing in fiat amount as well. Being integrated doesn't matter per se; anywhere that accepts bitcoin through Coinbase accepts bitcoin.

So I'm thinking -- get a wallet that you control and maintain your own private keys, rather than leaving it to Coinbase.

in addition, coinbase monitors how you spend your coin, so i dont know whats so great about that. there are multiple accounts of coinbasae terminating accounts without warning for simply sending coins to a gambling website, and have called in LE when they traced coins to a DMN in the past as well.

technically it is the same thing, you have an account not a bitcoin wallet when using Coinbase or any similar service which means no control over bitcoin (private keys).

anyways online wallets should not be used or at least be used with minimal amounts.

But, blockchain.info isn't good either. There are more & more blockchain.info wallet hacked everyday
If you protect your wallet with 2FA there's low or no chance of you getting hacked. I always use 2FA on my BC and other account.
its not just getting hacked but also about being traced ..

Why do you use online wallets if you have privacy and security problems? Install Bitcoin Core to your PC, wait 2-3 days to synchronize then never turn it off.
The best wallet is the wallet which you control %100 and secure.

It's a wallet but not online wallet. This thread is about online wallets. So, it's another 3rd party lightweight Bitcoin client but we don't define it as "online wallet".

bitcoin core might be a problem for people that dont have the disk space to download the whole blockchain, but i do agree wholeheartedly with the latter part of your statement. in the case they either lack the disk space or patience to download the whole blockchain, a lite wallet such as multibit or electrum would be a great solution.

coinbase isnt a wallet, its an exchange. ive stated my points earlier in the thread as well. the argument: "i can put my coins there so its a wallet" is not valid; if you do not control your private keys, then its not a wallet. going by the logic "i can put my coins there," a ponzi/hyip site might as well be a wallet. coinbase requires your documents as you are dealing with reversible transactions (CC), with irreversible currency (bitcoin), and you much verify your identity to confirm that it is your money you are using to purchase bitcoin through that bank account. in addition, i have a xapo account, and have used it for minor things, but i have never been asked to provide any documentation whatsoever besides a phone verification for security/2fa.

Good -- this is a very important distinction. Always remember the cardinal rule: If you don't control the private keys, you don't control the bitcoin. Doesn't matter what your "account balance" says on a website. Gox users found that out the hard way.

To the OP.... online wallets are pretty meh.... blockchain.info if you gotta, since at least you control the keys. But I'd stick to a good desktop wallet like Electrum.

i wouldnt recommend blockchain.info even as a last resort; ive stated my points on this earlier as well, but tl;dr, their explorer accepts spoofed transactions as valid. there was a whole debacle about satoshi's coins moving some time ago, and it was discovered that this issue only existed on blockchain.info because of this spoofed tx issue. now assuming their wallets work off the blockchain.info block explorer's data, their wallets are vulnerable to abuse.

havent heard too much on that service, I would recommend you download a wallet program such as multibit for a more user-friendly wallet or electrum if you want to have more control over what you can do with your coins.

Yes people, especially new users, since the older are well aware of this, please do not use online wallets, any! Multibit is a great little wallet (there are many more, but lets stick to this one) that will let you secure your bitcoins and they will be 10 times safer than on some web wallet where you don't even own your private keys.

Just try Multibit for example, run through the setup, make a backup and you will be happy to finally be your own bank!

I wouldnt recommend online wallets, unless youre using it to gamble or make a temp purchase.

Most of the known online wallets like blockchain had way too many incidents that are overlooked. I suggest to stick with desktop wallets and only migrate some portions of bitcoin if you feel like need to use it.

Its just really how its being used.

i really wish people would stop blindly referring to blockchain.info as "the best" without even remembering to consider their past problems. even recently, it was brought up that someone had spoofed transactions to make it appear that satoshi's coins had moved from his address, when no other block explorer showed it.

I agree, I am not a huge fan of online wallets at all. There have been too many bad experiences involved in using them so I no longer recommend them to new users, or anyone for that matter. In my opinion cell phone wallets are more secure and less likely to get hacked than desktop wallets if the user is not tech savvy. I recommend Breadwallet for iOS users and Mycelium for Android.

It's not always dangerous. If you don't do shady things with Bitcoin you don't need to scare. Get verified only in legit major sites though.

They are not online wallets. You can say stay away from online wallets until XT -Core fight is over.

But when blockchain problem occur, you can try install multibit and then import the private key to obtain your blockchain money back

DO NOT KEEP ANYTHING YOU'RE NOT WILLING TO LOSE ON AN EXCHANGE!!!  It's not a wallet.  Exchanges are hacked constantly. Only leave funds there that you are willing to "gamble"/trade with.

As noted before a wallet is someplace where ONLY YOU have access to the private keys. You wouldn't let anybody other than family or close friends have the key to your house so why would you give the keys to your money to somebody else?

Having said that, if you're trusting of US based companies then Coinbase (http://"https://www.coinbase.com/join/527cac113ce11bc79200000e") is probably your best bet for temporary storage of funds. It's more of an exchange than a wallet (again because you don't have the private keys). If you're going to store long term then it's worth reading up on cold storage and learning how to use alternative clients like Armoury.

It has been mentioned before but you need to stop using online wallets until the fork controvery is over. Why? If a fork occurs the online operator may be on the losing side of the fork.

The safest option is to use the official Bitcoin Core client. If a hard fork to Bitcoin XT occurs in January 2016 all you would need to do is download and start using Bitcoin XT at that time. Bitcoin XT uses the same data directories as Bitcoin Core so there is no need to move your wallet.dat from Core to XT. You also have control of your private keys. So bite the bullet and use Bitcoin Core. With old versions of Bitcoin QT it was faster to use the bootstrap.dat (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=145386.0) to download the blockchain but with the newest version of Bitcoin Core direct sync is faster.

better yet, dont keep anything on your gambling wallet, and make sure very little, if anything at all, makes it there. gambling usually will lead to losses, and its good to prevent yourself from gambling in the first place, or at least minimize the amount you gamble.

true, it is straightforward to use and incredibly popular thanks to the company's name, but remember, youre dealing with your money here. security and reliability should be your primary concern. would you keep your money in a bank that got robbed from every other month, but was just easy to use? hell no. if the wallet is not secure, its best not to even consider any other factors that might persuade one to use it.

I will recommend use blockchain.info as it is the most secured bitcoin network..it has all the fecilitys and milletry grade securty ..till now it is never ever being hacked and in future too it will not be hacked..better than any other bitcoin wapsite like coinbase or anything at least you will have access to your private key
