stay with win7. with win 10 you are a beta tester.

"never change a running system"

Windows 7 is the best choice for now imho.

Win 7 is like the new version of xp given most users are on that os.

Windows 10 has a whole slew of privacy issues. Not suitable for using Bitcoin or other crypto coins.

If you want to stay with Windows 7 then it is ok,

You can try to install Windows 8.1 it is still good and is similar to Window 10

Windows 10 looks like a windows 7 and windows 8.1 hybrid using both good points from the two of them. I would say stick with windows 7 due to windows 10 having some issues with privacy like mentioned

Windows 7 and Windows 10 are mostly completely different, Windows 10 has it own store. I run it in virtual machine but seems that some function are buggy and sometimes doesn't work.

My biggest problem with upgrading our licenses on Windows 7 machines to Windows 10 is that while 10 is technically "free" right now, they will move it to a service-based subscription eventually, which means an additional annual charge.

This fee will likely be in the hundred dollars per year range, so plotting that out, some have had windows XP machines running for 10 years, up to $1000 savings by not switching.   That isn't to say that most users will be able to get away with 10 years on Windows 7, however for every machine we can run Windows 7 on effectively for the next few years that's $100 savings per machine per year.  We have also "upgraded" every machine that came with Windows 8 to Windows 7.  ;)

Disclaimer:  I have been running Windows 10 pre-releases on at least two machines since it became available to the development community.

I don't want to update but my laptop with win 8 is constantly trying to download windows 10.
Microsoft now forces people to use their new system which is ridiculous and a bit scary. I can't turn off the updates in win 8 as it locked out somehow once it detected win 10 update is available. I'll probably have to uninstall win 8 and go back to 7 as it for now allows me to skip updates.

Yeah its becoming more and more of a problem, they aren't being very honest about what they are doing which I think is the worst part.

Yes. I have Windows 8.1 on my laptop and it constantly tried downloading Windows 10 after I downgraded. I somehow managed to it off. However, I'm not aware of any controversial stuff being pushed to Windows 7. My main system has it with updates turned on (only notifications). Everything is fine for now.
I'd recommend everyone to downgrade if they upgraded to Windows 10.

Why do smart people still use windows?

I really mean it!

Most people here should know how insecure windows is compared to osx and linux distros.

Sure osx is more expensive but don't you think it's well worth it?

We are talking about privacy not security. This is different. Linux is great security and privacy wise. However, OSX is on par with Windows when it comes to privacy. If you think that Apple isn't harvesting information think again.

Windows has barely changed since XP. They just tinker with the UI and break a few things.

You should look into free (as in freedom) operating systems.

I think you meant privacy there. And I don't think they're on par.

OSX allows full disk encryption and you get to keep the keys if you want.

Is there some sort of leak that proves that apple can see your hd and hand it to authorities?

I'm not an apple fanboy but I have to use windows in my workplace and company computers and I can see the difference.

Windows has more software available to it. I can give you an example: NI Labview is only available for Windows (AFAIN), for more average users, mmm... games (wider range), office (there are clones, but nothing is easier to use nor has the same functionality), etc.

Maybe you could run software through PlayOnLinux or using VMs, but the performance is not even close to running them natively.

Buying a Mac is simply not affordable in some countries (I think mine is one of those), unless you get a huge paycheck every month.

Software is a valid point. You need to buy parallels too to run everything.

The price of hardware I think it's not a valid point because if you compare macs with windows top hardware (it's the only fair comparison) you'll see the price will match.

You should look into free (as in freedom) operating systems.

Someone should look into this and make an user-friendly package and of course charge a fair price for it.

I meant that the OP should look at distributions of Linux or other FOSS operating systems like FreeBSD.

LOL!  As someone who routinely updates his Microsoft certifications, I can tell you a LOT changes between versions, esp on the server side.

The GUI tends to stay the same because most everyone likes it.

Windows 10 introduces a lot of features you won't have any use for. Cortana and other glossy apps are by default spying on you. If you fully trust microsoft's intentions then feel free to get windows 10, but I don't think their data mining is benign.

Unless you want to spend a significant amount of time to disable OS functions that take advantage of your bandwidth and send your info to Microsoft then stick with what you're used to.

Windows 8 seems okay (I only used it for a few months).

But I rather stick with windows 7 given it has been pretty stable for me.

I use it for VMs and such is all just to get stuff done when it needs getting done or when I need to play in a sandbox.  :D

From what I read somewhere even if you disable all of the visible services that have privacy issues attached to it there are some in the background that you can't disable.

I say be safe and stay away from windows 10 until a more viable option that has been tested for a few years without any hiccups comes to market (if ever).

I've recently updgraded to windows 10, so far no issues. You can change what you send to microsoft in the settings. I don't see what the big deal of it all is.
You can choose when to install the updates in windows 10. Even though I haven't had any issues with it so far, I still prefer windows 7 over 10.

I did mean privacy. Is that a built in feature? Then keep living in the dreamland where Apple doesn't have the keys. Here are two links related to privacy problems:

I expect things to improve as they push out more updates and other software is updated for improved compatibility. Looking forward to seeing some DX12 games though.

I have 2 monitors and i hate the tiny little about 6px wide corner in the upper right corner of the left and in the upper left corner of the right monitor. I often swap a window from one to another screen and always get caught at this corner. Even if i disable the little corners are still there. Win 7 don't had this corners. Yes. Why the seperate features are not enableable each? Customization was never a strong point of windows @ stock with no mods.

Microsoft has been sneaking telemetry updates onto Windows 7 and 8, sometimes disguised as important rather than optional updates. This forum post lists all the updates you should uninstall and hide for privacy: http://www.sevenforums.com/general-discussion/367377-how-remove-windows-10-upgrade-updates-windows-7-8-a-30.html#post3127044

Also, if you have automatic updates turned on Windows 10 has probably already been downloaded to your computer. Microsoft is hoping the nag messages will get you to install, if not at some point in future they will most likely force it on you (no choice.) You need to visit the link and uninstall and hide the updates. Automatic updates is no longer safe to use, change to manual so you can pick and choose.

Wrong. DirectX 12 is a Windows 10 exclusive. They're doing this to push gamers towards the operating system. However, for AMD users Mantle should be sufficient if it gets popular as it offers good advantages over DirectX 11 and it is comparable to 12.

windows 10 fast and pratice more than older versions. i like it.
Of course it is fast(er) than the older operating systems. It is much faster at delivering more data to their servers.  ::)

Note: Anyone who is using Facebook (as a example) but is complaining about Windows 10 privacy issues is a hypocrite.

Update: You did not express yourself clearly.

I worked with win10 for a few days. Runs all my games from callofduty1 to waw. I find that my win7 install is a beast compared to win10. I did a few benchmarks, as ssd, crystaldiskmark, heaven and valley, my win7 install killed win10 in benchmarks. 10 didn't even come close.

I reimaged a win7 backup back to my raid 0, fuck win10 it's garbage.

If you only have one computer, choose to use Windows, and care about Microsoft's invasion of your privacy you should be running Windows 7 until end of life with automatic updates turned off. When update Tuesday rolls around wait a week and do a search to find out which updates you should avoid. Assume Microsoft is going to try to push Windows 10 on you any way they can. If your laptop is compatible with Linux consider ripping Windows off and installing Ubuntu instead.

Ubuntu still has some privacy issues (sending search data to Amazon). Why not take a dive and try something different like Gentoo or Arch?

Useless? What are you talking about? Windows 10 is better than all the versions so far but it is not worth it because of privacy issues. Only users who have used Windows 7, Windows 8 (or 8.1) and Windows 10 on a single system (even for just a short time period) should be talking about this. The difference is quite noticeable depending on feature. However, I reverted back to Windows 8.1 the second the news came out about the privacy issues. I doubt that they could force somebody to update from 7 or 8.

People should learn how to properly use Linux (at least a distribution such as Ubuntu) just in case.

Advantages over Windows 10

1.Really user friendly interface for an average windows user .
2. Manually modification of process threads is permitted .
3.All soft-wares and engines developed for windows earlier still works on windows 7.
4.Simple to use, very reliable.

Win 7 is like the new version of xp given most users are on that os.

Windows 10 has a whole slew of privacy issues. Not suitable for using Bitcoin or other crypto coins.

Yea definitely, win 7 is the best. But if you wanna store bitcoin, then better not use windows at all......

Wrong. You turn off the sending of data, data still keeps getting collected. It can easily be harvested via those automatic updates. Illegal windows copies don't contain anything, stop posting nonsense. No idea where such people get those version; maybe on www.notmalware.com/windows ? I have used quite a few illegal copies that are much better than the original Windows 7.

But still you are not able to disable all the features. And if there are some updates like the big november update all privacy settings are reset again to the default value without any notice from you. So you have to check your settings every day... I don't think this is a great user experience. I'm staying at Win7 i think it's more user friendly. And there are no driver issues or similar things.

If you want to stick to Win10 you might want to have a look at this:

I dont know how any of yous can prefer windows 10 over 7, I upgraded to it a while back and it was terrible. id rather use windows vista. Windows 7 as far as windows perating systems go has probably been the best yet. windows 8 was a disaster and windows 10 the improvements they made dont really make it any better. Just my opinion but i had to go back to windows 7.

Will probably stay on windows 7 for the foreseeable future as well unless the next windows version is an actual step forward instead of back.

Why do smart people still use windows?

I really mean it!

Most people here should know how insecure windows is compared to osx and linux distros.

Sure osx is more expensive but don't you think it's well worth it?

i use w10 in a VM (with pci passthrough for my gpu) for gaming only...
they can sniff as much as they want there as i dont care

i prefer linux over OSX though... if you want a simple nice looking gui just use elementary os... (i prefer gentoo and qubes though)

Reason to stick to Win 7:

Is stable
user-friendly
Free
Quick and easy update.

For now, i will not advice anyone having full licence of 7 to upgrade to win 10 because is unstable. Pls, save yourself from the stress, donot be tempted by microsoft upgrade notification if, your system is runing smoothly on win 7.

Regard's

Windows 10 has been a great upgrade for me. Have the start menu toolbar back and everything is back to a familiar location and feel. I haven't had much problems with instability but only used it for about 2-3 months so far.

I have tried both windows 10 and windows 7. I like windows 7 because its fast not faster than windows 10 but even then it has ability to stop updates and most important no one(microsoft) can spy on you/collect your personal data in windows 7.
