Title: The Bitcoin Board Game
Post by: Mageant on October 12, 2012, 10:56:39 PM
Hello everyone,

I have developed a Bitcoin-themed board game. It's a "print-and-play" game meaning that you need print it out (PDF files), and then make and supply some of the parts for the game yourself. Copyright is free for personal use (for now).

The game "simulates" the growth of the Bitcoin economy in a slightly humorous way (please don't take it seriously). The twist of the game is that you can either player cooperatively or to win individually. To win cooperatively you need to bring the Bitcoin price over 60$, otherwise an individual winner is determined. There is also one player who plays "Satoshi" and whoever reveals him gets a big advantage.

The game can also be played by people who don't know anything about Bitcoin (although they will miss some of the jokes). I could imagine this game would also be a nice introduction to Bitcoin.

You can download the PDF files from here:
http://cjgames.com/downloads/Bitcoin_Board_Game.zip (3MB)

It still needs some testing so I would welcome anybody to play it and send me some feedback.

If anybody wants to improve the artwork you are welcome to do so. I just used a standard clipart collection. Please contact me for the original files.

You can also donate to support this project:

Have fun!!!

sent you some BTC too.

One critic though: you should use different pics for each of the notes. Bernank, Greenspan, etc. whatever the names of those criminals are. take one for each fun bux denomination! ;D

Small rules update.

This is cool!

My favourite line in the rules: "One player is 'Satoshi'. He can only win if everybody wins."

I have a first suggestion:
How about playing the game counter-clockwise?

Looks like fun to me!

It'd be neat to see professional artwork and printing on something like this...!

Yes it should be counterclockwise play...

Also - I sort of hate the game board. I get it, it's supposed to be printable. But wouldn't it be nicer as a pentagon or hexagon shaped board that more resembled an typical boardgame? Also I'd like to see some more outlandish events... and some additional players (lets leverage existing personallities and memes into the game) at least we should Put Gavin in it...

Newest version is now 1.0.1. Rules for two players have been added.
Also the download URL has been changed (see first post).

Would people be interested in a VASSAL module for the Bitcoin Board Game?

Vassal is a game engine which allows people to play board games online. You have to make a "module" for the board game to be simulated online.

Check it out here:

Just took a look at the game and it seems pretty awesome! I think vassal might be a good idea in this situation (so I don't have to print anything off :P)

Bump for reaching $40.

I would like to mention that I made this game about 6 months ago when prices like these were hardly imaginable.

When we hit $60, according to my game, then we win!

This would be a great project to put on Kickstarter or similar (there was a bitcoinstarter.com but it's down at the moment) and get crowdfunding to get it done properly and all the contributors get a copy of the boardgame :)

Nice idea. I think I will actually do that.
But it would be best to collect the funds in Bitcoin, too.

I would have three financing stages depending on amount of funds coming in.

1.) Up to about $500
Just have some minor changes and make the game available for purchase on thegamecrafter.com (http://thegamecrafter.com)

2.) up to about $2000
Have the graphics remade nicely by some professional graphical artists.
Publish on thegamecrafter.com (http://thegamecrafter.com) in higher volume.

3.) over $2000 (approx.)
Like 2.) but have a larger printing run (ie. not necessarily on thegamecrafter.com), so that an individual game would cost less.

Would you be interested in this?

Bitcoinstarter.com was a Bitcoin crowdfunding platform. But the site's been down for a while :(

I'd be interested but I think it's better to aim high - maybe look for a graphic designer to partner with?

I'd be interested if you partnered with a graphic designer and aimed for approx $2000 to make it awesome :)

I could even help with a website.

I just made and uploaded a version 2.0 which is less luck-dependent and should make a more interesting game.

Also the board now varies from game to game (similar to Settlers of Catan) so that each game is different.

Hello,

Bitcoinstarter.com is on its way back-up with much better features!  I think Mageant you've been in touch with someone regarding it but not entirely sure. We would like to list this project when we our official opening. We'll be using Bitcoin PR buzz in your signature so you can take advantage of some of the traffic to your project. Just PM me and we can discuss you getting up on it  thanks!

This game looks freaking awesome. Is there a direct link to the actual game board / better cards? [I don't have a stock card or anything fancy and there's no place to print them locally to make them nicer]

There is no actual board game. There is just a prototype that I have made.

You can also make one with the files I uploaded. You will have to print them out (it also works on normal paper) and then cut them up and glue cardboard backs on them if necessary.

With kickstarter its harder to market your venture/idea.

Its gotten crowded, but not impossible. I also suggest other crowd sourcing like indigogo the lets you receive the funds regardless if the goal has been reached or not.

With Kickstarter, its really a time sensitive thing, so if you dont have a effective marketing or some blog hype then look into that before. In this case, it`ll be this forum that drives your donation.

People fail because of lack of preparation, so prepare!

It's funny how outdated the prices are... I mean, it seemed reasonable at the time.   :D

I took a look and thought to myself that this game could be a little more realistic on the prices but then I saw the creation date  :D

It needs a "to da moon" revision.
