Title: Hardware wallet name
Post by: slush on November 05, 2012, 02:00:37 PM
Hi,

few moments ago I posted announcement of Bitcoin hardware wallet project, which we're working on (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=122438.msg1317706). At this stage, we have only internal codename for the project, but we're looking for business name for the final product.

We'll be very pleased if the community help us to find some catchy and unique name for the product. For that reason, I'm offering 1BTC bounty to whoever who post the name which we then use for our hardware wallet.

Unless it will have some hidden sense, please do *not* suggest names containing "bit", "coin", "key" or so. By participating in this bounty, you agree that you give up the copyright and any other rights related to the name. Also, to make this thread sane, please suggest maximum three names per post and up to three posts per user.

Hmm... "nanobank" - oops website taken - okay then "mubank" (website available - the "mu" is taken from G.E.B's meaning "to unask"). :)

[edit] Do the rules apply to edits? :D

Hm, as I see it, I should add additional rule:

Maximum three suggestions per post and maximum three posts per user.

1. SERF --> Secure Easy Reliable Fast

2. "Long Pocket" if that name is not protected. My Personal favourite

I can really good Imagine saying something like "I'm going to pay this from my long Pocket" while getting a small device with a slush logo on it from my (actual) pocket.

3. Bit-Shield - I now no Bit.

Will come up with more as the day passes.

Oaken 'oak' the wood, with 'en' added onto it to sound like Open
Leafer/Leaver/Leaves
Its fall and i thought of people using the hardware wallet for a "plug and go" style of mobile usable, For tablets, netbooks and the likes.

Zbrojnice or Zbrojnica or Zbrojovka.

or the same with more Anglicized spelling:

Zbroynice or Zbroynica or Zbroyovka.

Also, any Czech product that has "pilzner" in the name is almost guaranteed to sell well worldwide.

"bit", "coin", "key" or so

The point is that best product names are generally unrelated to the purpose.

I had similar bounty for overlay bitcoin network protocol known as Stratum today. There were proposals like "OverNet" or so, but Stratum was clean winner. It is unrelated to "protocol", "network", "bitcoin" or "client", but it still reminds some layer and sounds a bit esoteric. I believe that I'll also find some great name for the wallet as well as "I" found Stratum.

Well, all good names are already taken, eg. Česká zbrojovka.

So maybe: Plzeňská zbrojovka?

CZ has a good name recognition in the USA for their side-arms.

So just maybe "Zbroyovka"? This way the name will be pronounced reasonably correctly by Anglophones. Misspelling of "j" as "y" should give you a reasonable trademark defense in the Czech Republic, no?

"Zircons from Jack Hills in the Narryer Gneiss Terrane, Yilgarn Craton, Western Australia, have yielded U-Pb ages up to 4.404 billion years,[10] interpreted to be the age of crystallization, making them the oldest minerals so far dated on Earth"

Looking at the wiki for Greek mythological figures (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Greek_mythological_figures), how about:

Talos (Tάλως), a giant forged from bronze by Hephaestus, and gifted by Zeus to his lover Europa as her personal protector

Phrike (Φρίκη), spirit of horror and trembling fear. Perhaps better Anglicised as Frike FreeKey.
edit:I have changed the Anglicised version as the Greek word is pronounced "free-key" (http://www.forvo.com/word/phrike/), (which I guess is where we get the word "freaky").

Midas, a king of Phrygia granted the power to turn anything to gold with a touch

I guess I just liked the sound of the word - short and concrete.

The trembling fear is I hope what the central bankers feel when they hold one in their hand.

I suggest

Tesaurox,
Tesaubox,
Tesaunox.

They are all mixtures of the Greek 'Thesauros'=treasure house, the Spanish 'Tesoro'=treasure coming from the same source, and the English word 'Box'. The last one I created because it has a similar sound like 'Knox' from 'Fort Knox' for all those which are more familiar with modern than ancient history.

Have fun when picking your name!
Edit: Please also feel free to use it as a starting point for further modification, I am not interested in the bounty. This should be fun!

2) "IceTank" is the best suggestion so far, provided by Phelix.  Use icy or wintery visual branding, a white/blue/silver color scheme, with a very professional logo and you'll have a winner. This product deserves a slick brand... I'm happy to advise, just get in touch with me on Skype.

Pock-It (already taken, but I guess it depends on where you register it)
it's funny because it's kinda pronounced like "wallet" and you put it in your pocket, so it talks to you: "pocket it!"

Avare

Privet (private wallet, also "Hello!" in Russian language) In English it will probably be spelled like Private or Pivote (tank being able to turn in-place from WoT).

Hardcard (already used by ISA HDD controller/dumb harddrive hybrids in mid 80-ties, now obsolete)

Bitbox (already suggested by someone else before me, already used by some "hardened FireFox" project)

edit: added one more variant Hardlet. Sounds like hardware, wallet or applet.

Either way, these are different types of products. As one of my friends who works in the advertising business explained to me once, since the products are different categories, in this case food and electronics, you are OK legally (not sure how valid this was). Either way, think it would be a safe name to use.

slush, stick: I think you got it exactly right ;)

After reading this, I just thought of the name Popsicle

1) its slush (ice) on a stick
2) its a tiny device that connects to USB sticks
3) you get the cold storage connotation from the name

that is pretty good. isn't that a brand name, though?

+1 "Slush" -  cold storage connotation from the name, and sounds good in every language. (apparently not)

In my language it sounds very much like the sound one can hear when dealing with consequences of toilet "jobs".  :D
In my language "slush" (шлюшкa) sounds similar to "slut" or "whore". Not good. The Hardlet is better ;)

I see lot of proposals is done just by joining two common words (like PocketBank). As I said, I don't think it is going to work as brand name.

The name I suggested was Popsicle though.
Icepop or something along those lines will be cool too.

Icicle or SicklePop will be good enough? The casing must be semi-transparent white to play on icicle brand. Do we need to try to find something that plays along with name Slush or something that relates to hardware wallet technology or completely unrelated name such as yellowpants?

if its this color I would buy 100000000

Also, the reasoning for the name is simple- Cold storage device that is created by slush and stick, the device will be similar to a usb stick

And I'm pretty sure the name can be anything, but I like popsicles a lot so...

Perakey - Pera + key, pera being Latin for wallet. Also sounds like "Parakeet" (which could make for a great logo!)

Keywi - Kiwi + Key. Can be spelled Keewi, Keewii, Keywii, Keewey, or Keywee.

Arctic - Another reference to cold storage.

Hi,

few moments ago I posted announcement of Bitcoin hardware wallet project, which we're working on (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=122438.msg1317706).

Also, it may have been suggested already.

Kryptos - from the Greek κρύπτω (http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/κρυπτός), meaning conceal.

Witt - named after Whitfield Diffie, a pioneer in public-key cryptography, and the word wit, meaning mental sharpness and inventiveness; keen intelligence.

Locket - Portmanteau of 'lock' (implying security & stability) and 'wallet'. The www.lock.et (http://www.lock.et) domain name is available.

Heh, that's funny. LockIt and Razr were both names I came up with too.

Although I'm pretty sure Razr is the name of a Motorola smartphone.

What about Locket (lock + wallet)?

If the "locket" hardware wallet can be Comfortable worn as a real Locket on a necklace, Than this name is really good, But it would need to be changed to a Productie name,

The appeal of locket is that it's a portmanteau (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Portmanteau). At least to me. Also, I updated my original entries.

Even I, the creator of the name "Oink", must concede defeat to piglet :3 Great name! But allow me to post this.

-everydayI'm snippin'-
1) A shield for Raspberry Pi (for DIY hackers)
2) Custom hardware based solution (for common consumers)
-snippitysnipsnip-

Since your name is specifically catered to the Raspberry Pi version, I'm gonna offer up Oink to slush for the custom hardware one for nothing more than the satisfaction of knowing I named a product. (If he should choose to want that). Something like this

-everydayI'm snippin'-
1) A shield for Raspberry Pi (for DIY hackers) - Piglet
2) Custom hardware based solution (for common consumers) - Oink
-snippitysnipsnip-

Just a suggestion, cause I'm enjoying this bounty ^_^. Of course, the final decision is up to slush :P There is no doubt in my mind that Mush has improved upon my idea :P I'm rambling probably considering I'm tired, but anyways, nice name :)

Well, a lot of names like that can lead to epic projects.

Because

2. one of the earliest authors deserves some credit. Shoulders of giants, and so on.

A slush fund, colloquially, is an auxiliary monetary account or a reserve fund. However, in the context of corrupt dealings, such as those by governments or large corporations, a slush fund can have particular connotations of illegality, illegitimacy, or secrecy in regard to the use of this money and the means by which the funds were acquired.[/b]

yeah, not.

Well, perhaps more famously, Oink was an app (now shut down (http://techcrunch.com/2012/03/14/kevin-roses-oink-shuts-down/)) created by Digg founder Kevin Rose. Cool name, but out of the picture.

If we'll choose "Piglet", I'm also going to pay for "Oink", because I'm quite sure I'll use such lovely name for something related :-D.

Here's mine, unsubmitted before because it seems more like a linux release name, but completely trademark-free, and you are able to build a brand without previous meaning associations (like how amazon.com has nothing to do with rivers, and few monsters are at monster.com):

"Brookesia"

btw: This is what a member of the genus brookesia looks like if you need the name to inspire iconography:

http://news.bbcimg.co.uk/media/images/58499000/jpg/_58499388_tiny_chameleons_photo2_brookesia_micra_juvenile_on_finger_frank_glaw.jpg

Specific species in this genus have names like "brookesia minima", "brookesia micra", "brookesia bonsi", if you want to borrow them for product names under a company name.

Btw I don't see "Bitcoin hardware wallets" in the list ;-).

^^^ Actually, I think if possible you should go with piglet, just to teach this *'%&## namestealing corporations a lesson. But you should consult a lawyer before doing so.

If you get the OK by one, than go with it. Legally Stealing a protected name from Disney could make some awesome press.

You would think "Phoenix" would be a word you could use, but it didn't fly, and neither did "Firebird", and then even "Firefox" took licensing agreements because a EU trademark turned up later. The Diamond "Viper" video card name had to be licensed from a car alarm company. An EU or US name has a trademark infringement if it can be put in a category (numbered above) where there is a previous trade use.

"Popsicle" is a nice name, but also happens to be a trademark of a large company http://www.unileverusa.com/brands-in-action/detail/Popsicle-/296139/ - they will likely defend it's use to prevent it from becoming generic like many people think it is. In the UK, this is an "ice lolly".

"Oink" sounds like a search engine.

Are trademarks valid also for categories which are out of business for trademark holder? I mean - can Disney really protect "piglet" for some electronic gadget?

Btw Honda Firebird is also motorbike and Dodge Viper is a car. I'm not affraid that Disney will go over us with USB gadget (as far as we won't misuse Disney's piglet images).

Disney does business in electronic gadgets, and they have a trademark in that business category.

Viper the car is in a different category than computer peripherals, but Viper the car alarm was found to be in the same electronics category as a video card. This is an example of how different products will be found to occupy the same trademark category.

Firebird the vehicle is a different product class than software, so using this name for something completely different would be fine if there was no trademark in the other area. Firebird also ended up being the same name as database software though, so the name was already taken in the same category. Thunderbird for an email reader doesn't infringe on Thunderbird the car.

Firefox FAQ:

Why did you choose Firebird in the first place?

With the assistance of attorneys we assessed other uses before selecting Firebird and did not consider these uses to be in the same domain as our web browser. It is very difficult to come up with a good name that is not also used by some other company or project, so choosing and verifying the availability of a name is a complicated process that involves many difficult judgment calls.

If you have a small project, likely a large monolithic corporation won't come after you. That is, unless they are part of a large copyright and trademark cartel that enforces the status quo of media consumption and international limitation of free commerce, with lots of lawyers, and they don't like what you are doing.

Bounty is still open, although we slowly inclines to the "Piglet". There's no hurry in closing the bounty, but as far as there won't be a better proposal, we'll choose this.

If we'll choose "Piglet", I'm also going to pay for "Oink", because I'm quite sure I'll use such lovely name for something related :-D.

I knew there was a reason I liked you ^_^

The characters and images are protected by copyright. The word and name is protected by trademark.

You'd probably be fine because they'd never notice. I could make a "Zune" FPGA miner and might not get cease-and-desisted or sued by Microsoft, but the possibility is there.

My suggestions (I don't like anything with pig in it)
S words are always catchy, so;

Squirrel

Scrimp

Stash

These can all have extras added, eg squirrel-away, squirrelNsave, squirrel-saver, squirrel-store, stash-box, scrimp-box etc etc.
Goes well with Slush too.

Ok so, piglet is funny and all, but am I the only one who has trouble thinking that I'd actually buy a product called a "piglet"?  It would be downright embarrassing to own just based on the name itself.  It reminds me too much of Disney, cartoons, and kid things.  I'm an adult male - I don't want to own something called a piglet...

Lockr is a way better name IMO.  I am serious when I say that calling it a piglet would make me reconsider the plan to purchase one.

I have another two proposals:

Tresor / Trezor

Do you like it? Which version do you like more? Do you have any association with the brand name? Please also write down what's your native language, because your associations may depend on it.

The brand name shoud associate security, reliability, something safe, not easy to break, strongness, power. It can also associate money, treasure, things of high value or lock, key, chain. It should feel strong, safe and reliable, heavy, secure. Not funny, not light, not portable. It should differentiate from other bitcoin related brand names (no “bit”).

Tresor makes me immediately think about http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/TRESOR - perhaps just because I'm a crypto freak though  ;D

Trezor is better, imho.

In all honesty, it does sound a bit like a cheap cell phone. Or an "As Seen On TV" product.

What about Bitcoin Savings and Trust? Oh wait... ::)

Why cell phone? Any association with Motorola Razr?

Yeah, anything with a Z like razr or trezr or whatever just seems cheap. It might just be the flood of american products spelled this way though, and Tresor sounds too close to tremor in my opinion.

Thank you all for your valuable inputs. We were thinking about all possibilities and we decided to close the contest and pick the name for our hardware wallet product: Trezor

Landing site trezor.bitcoin.cz (http://trezor.bitcoin.cz) currently points to bitcointalk forum, but there'll be product website quite soon.

If you want to follow development progress, please subscribe to https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=122438.0
