Title: Vote SaltySpitoon for Alt Currency Moderator!
Post by: SaltySpitoon on November 05, 2012, 05:52:25 PM
Hey guys, I have been in communication with Theymos about becoming the new Alt Currency section moderator. In order to do so, I must receive feedback from the community first to see how you like the idea, or whether we would prefer to keep it anarchy. So let me introduce myself, and then you can all vote no.

I am SaltySpitoon, and have been an avid BTC Talk user since August 17, 2011, and have been on the Alt Currency scene for a while. I am a BTC and LTC user, but I don't discriminate against any coins, feel free to search my post history for any negative bias towards any coins (perhaps I have been a bit less than neutral about Solidcoins, but I hope that you will forgive me there)

I believe I have been fairly neutral on subject matters that haven't warranted unreasonable behavior, and probably most important to this section, I have a sense of humor and am pretty laid back. I have been in no serious disputes, and have even contributed in the form of an idea for a new cryptocurrency (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=82726.0)

To be clear, this would only be moderation of the Alt Currency section, no where else. And I thank you for your COINsideration!

Sounds good to me. I usually don't hang out in the Alt Currency board; but recalling your previous posts I've seen, I think you'd be a cool mod.

saltyspitoon gets my vote

he seems to have a level head and advocates many alts, has some things in the pipeline concerning litecoin and deals alot on BTC-E and the litecoin global. so his comments may be lacking but his mind is in the right place.

which is what a mod should be.

knowing what is best without having to start arguments or make comments.

Not really, its more a vote of whether you find me qualified (or if not qualified, I won't at least break things) or would you rather to keep the anarchy.

To be humble, I vote against myself!

If people don't think that SaltySpitoon will be a good, fair moderator, the global moderators can continue to moderate Alternate cryptocurrencies. I don't think that the global moderators read this section much, though, so it may be better to have a dedicated moderator here.

I have known him for a while and done several transactions with him and he follows thru with what he says. He seems quite level headed, reasonable, has a sense of humor, and is knowledgeable of the happenings in the major alt currencies. I think he would be an asset to the community as moderator in the alt forum.

What does being a moderator give you in terms of special powers?

* Can you see the IP address of posters and identify sock puppets?
* Can you delete threads?
* Can you ban users?
* Can you merge threads?
* Can you lock threads?
* Can you unlock threads that were locked by the original poster?

As a moderator, what would you most like to do the Alt concurrency forum? Since you are asking for the post I'm assuming there's something about it you'd like to see different.

* Can you see the IP address of posters and identify sock puppets?
No.
* Can you delete threads?
Yes.
* Can you ban users?
No, but you get access to the staff board where you can request a ban and theymos will review it.
* Can you merge threads?
No, unless you ask theymos nicely to enable it for you. This power is not usually given to new moderators, though.
* Can you lock threads?
Yes.
* Can you unlock threads that were locked by the original poster?
Yes.

You can also split threads, move threads, sticky threads, add polls, and edit posts/polls. There might be other powers I forgot, but those are the major ones.

Please note that the answers I gave above are just the defaults. They can be changed if people believe that SaltySpitoon shouldn't have certain powers.

To be honest, I really don't know what powers come with the job, as a moderator of just a single board, I don't think I have some of those powers, besides perhaps being able to move threads and lock/unlock, although Alt Currency doesn't have any other subforums, so I can't see moving much. I think if there are major issues, I would defer to a global mod.

The goal is to keep the peace for the most part although I don't mind people having a bit of fun at each other at each other's expense, as long as its mutual and in good fun.

You'd better check smoothie's past posts before calling him running mate, some of those are quite abusive.

If you claim to be neutral you also need to be able to stand to your principles.

Trolling PPC is still somewhat forgivable but certainly an indication of being unfit of a moderator role. But these remarks are certainly abusive:

Yeah! This sure is a good place to have a Smoothie vs PPC "conversation". The picking Smoothie as a running mate, and comparing him to Sarah Palin was the joke which someone seems to have missed (Because in the 2008 U.S Presidential Election, Sarah Palin being bat shit insane, and the thought that McCane might die, and then we would have Palin as president, is widely believed to be what lost McCane the presidency).
That being said, Smoothie knows I love him, but I think hes crazy.

It's not about smoothie vs PPC. Tomatocage does not even remotely support PPC. I hope you are truly neutral as you have claimed but the fact that you seem to be eager to cozy up to a well-known troll brings some shadow of doubts.

Still I think volunteer work should be appreciated so I will give you the benefit of the doubt.

Thank you. Just curious here though, where am I cozying up with Smoothie? I've had more than a fair share of decent conversations with the guy, but I don't really think I've supported what he does. I may have badly worded something meant to be sarcastic, and its coming across wrong.

And for the record my stance on PPC, since I'm sure you would like to know, is that I don't really intend on using them, but I don't see why I should have a say on what currencies other people use, if they have no effect on me whatsoever.

Banning would certainly not help as long as you easily can recreate an account. It's actually better to have them keep the account - this way there's a clear track record.

Just find it funny that smoothie brings me into the conversation when, unlike him, I haven't asked to be a moderator, and I prefer to be seen as just a normal forum user.
I don't think smoothie really understands what waits him around the corner if he ever is appointed moderator... not like that will happen, given the alternative lol

Haha love you too !

I'm just a mega troll. I can be good too.  :D

I would vote against smoothie at all costs. one of the most offensive people here, and would be an absolute shithead as a mod.
Don't worry, that much is obvious to us. According to my quick count, his posts have been reported at least 31 times. Looking back at it, I'm surprised that he hasn't been banned...

Maged, I've been good. You can't discount that. I'm honest and upfront. If people cry about what I have to say...at the very least I'm not a scammer.

Psy was/is a mod. How am I any different?  :D
Are you suggesting psy is unfit as a mod? :D

Why? Are you?
This was addressed to smoothie as a twist, since he associated himself with you. I haven't reviewed your activity on this forum, thus I am not qualified to suggest anything.

I know...

What might that be waiting around the corner? Perhaps a nice fat bitcoin wallet.dat? he he he  :D

He didn't do anything, you mean saltyspitoon right?

Does the Alt section need a moderator? Why is this voting up now?
Well, the fact that this thread can't even hold up without being derailed by trolls is a pretty good reason to have a moderator for this subforum.

We don't have any moderators for this board. Any mention of smoothie actually running was a joke, but I have a feeling that saltyspitoon is going to have to make it clear that there is no way smoothie would ever be a mod with him

In all seriousness I would change my act and appearance on this forum if I was a mod. No more trolling etc.

I mean seriously how much could it hurt? If I fail then the current mods can remove me as mod the same day.

It is quite funny how much trolling came about when I made my thread, which is a serious request to become a mod.

Being a mod is probably proof of being unfit to be one.

Psy is different in that he's using his intelligence to be offensive. There's a little more to him than being a self-serving troll.

Probably not much more than a regular troll.

Not sure how we are any different.

He reported a lot of posts accurately, which is why I asked him to moderate some sections. He's proven to be an extremely effective moderator. I certainly appreciate his help.

Not that it matters given you already told me "no" to my request...but while we are talking about "reporting posts accurately" and "being an effective moderator" I thought you might consider the following links and could help me determine if these posts were reported by Psy as well:

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=36218.msg447496#msg447496
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=37455.msg464210#msg464210
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=37503.msg465284#msg465284
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=37502.msg465008#msg465008
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=45420.msg541636#msg541636

And more recently...

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=122062.msg1313566#msg1313566
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=96781.0
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=105285.msg1242333#msg1242333
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=81605.msg1224217#msg1224217
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=114442.msg1283463#msg1283463

The last link there I kind of agree with Psy on, but it isn't something I would expect a moderator to be engaging in nor saying on this forum.

Quite a lot of excessive cursing and name calling as well don't you think coming from someone who is an "effective moderator"?

Just saying...

You're the boss around here and thought you might want to know.

See I can report posts too.

I was a forum mod for almost a year (not here). Listening to people whine was such a terrible job and took so much of my time that I started to forget why I came to that forum to begin with.

I think it has a lot to do with wanting to improve the quality of the forum. Most people here already listen to people whine, so why not be able to do something about it?

When I say whine I mean about what you’re doing as a mod. We needed to know HTML to understand how to move, merge, add, and delete text, graphics, and links. We were required to help with technical problems, site access problems and posting problems. We had to relocate discussions to appropriate sections, write ban recommendations for the admin, close or lock threads based on interest or lack of activity, read everything whether you were interested or not, edit post content, delete threads, constantly worry about someone reporting your decisions, defend your actions all the time and for NO pay. Oh, we were mostly invisible too. At least the mods here get to contribute in the discussion. Does that sound like a good job to you? I wouldn’t do it again for $20 an hour.

Very true, you have no idea what a breath of fresh air this forum is.

Many forums are started solely for profit and developed around a phenomena or product line. The forum gives customers an outlet to discuss the topic, product or range of products. Advertizing and donations from wealthy benefactors brings in the money and supports a few at the top (sometimes only the Owner & Administrator) and pays the bills. Our business development officer used to suggest deletion of threads at the request of a sponsor! Zest for the topic or product (guns, computer parts or whatever) tends to get volunteers to “help out” or the admin will sometimes recruit from the ranks. Pretty soon you begin to realize you're just working a part time job so someone else can eat - but I’m not bitter.  ;D

What does being a moderator give you in terms of special powers?

* Can you see the IP address of posters and identify sock puppets?
No.
Please note that the answers I gave above are just the defaults. They can be changed if people believe that SaltySpitoon shouldn't have certain powers.

I hope theymos has enough brains to never turn IP reading for this salty person, I don't care how many posts were reported by this person. I am still very skeptical about salty with past events he/she/shemale clearly stated.

Shemale, and no, I don't get to see IPs. I just deal with general alt currency disputes, and hand anything major over to the global mods. I'm basically just a donator with a Staff title, that sees reports filed in the Alt Currency section and fixes minor disputes.
