Title: What plans do you have for your BTC stash?
Post by: gentlemand on November 04, 2015, 01:26:29 AM
I was toying with emptying a crappy paying savings account and buying a handful coins a few months ago with the intention of offloading them after a short term rise without touching my original amount.

Now it's here, and this rise would've done me fine but of course I failed to get around to it, I'm wondering what everyone else's strategies are.

Do people have set price levels that they'll divest some or all either up or down from here, hold all of them until the concept of selling them becomes ludicrous or somewhere in the middle?

I see quite a few posts where people are waiting to offload the lot for what seem like very low amounts considering the future potential. Have your plans changed the more time you've spent learning about it? Have they become shorter or longer term?

As for myself, if it really does rise like a total bastard I'm not sure I'd be able to bring myself to sell at set limits. The initial outlay has already been written off in my mind but I know it's the sensible option just in case.

I'm interested to hear everyone's thoughts.

I'm planning to sell some items in my house that I don't use anymore and proceeds will be converted to BTC and I think like 30% of my pay this payday will be converted to BTC, looks like this climb will not stop till end of this year and I want to take advantage of this.

For now, hold. I see this one as a new bubble starting. It could still stop before it gets crazy but if it does, I'll sell maybe 10% of my stack around the 1000-1200$ mark and than see how I feel the rest.

Next bubble could climb around 4-5k. Stabilize down to 1000$ after. I'm guessing this looking at how the first bubbles happened

my target was always 10k at first so this mini pump&dump ain't touch me, but then i said  to myself, why i can't simply wait until i can use bitcoin directly for everything?

and so it begins the greatest holding of our time, now i'm holding until the time is right to use them for what i really need

I mine, hold and use some bitcoins. When the price is higher than $5k, I will increase my spending, spend most of the mined coins and hold the rest.

I technically have to hold until 11th December or I would be taxed on any capital gains, so I guess I will see out the short term price changes.
After that I will be making decisions based on how much Gold I get per bitcoin, or if things really go crazy, if I can get property.

Hopefully new ways to spend bitcoin follow the price rise, otherwise it isn't too easy to profit from the increase without selling for fiat, which I would rather not do.

I can't even remember what my average buy-in is and how much fiat I have invested in Bitcoin in total.
I don't even know if I'm in the positive right now.

Frankly I don't even care, I'm holding until Bitcoin is at the level I feel it should be. And I'm prepared to go down with the ship if it doesn't happen.

I'm more worried about our fiat system collapsing any time soon than I am worried about Bitcoin crashing.

Hold until the top of the bubble, then sell all, and buy back as much as I can during the correction... then rinse repeat :).

Some part of me wants to take up Sir Richard on his offer to visit space. It would be a crazy expensive and short vacation, but absurdly cool!

Quite a few Bitcoiners took the plunge during the last peak. I think we'll be able to buy a space station with one Satoshi before Virgin Galactic is rolling.

I have had to raise my hand and solemnly swear that I will not interfere with BitChicks Husband's plan of following the SSS plan this time.  He is reminding me almost daily now about how many more coins we would have if only we would have sold, should have sold and so on.  So I have to just shut up and do it "his way."  ;)

Granted, we were noobs in 2013 and purchased right before the November bubble.  Not much time to learn some of the harder lessons that come along.  Now that we have experienced the long and painful extended season of no movement, we can play that game wiser.  I am all for selling some at intervals but I just want to set our rake higher than he does.  Oh well.

But the plans are to pay for our daughter's college education when the price bubbles first and foremost (with the cost of college lately we need quite a bit for that).  There are charities we will be donating 10% to when we cash out as well.  It will be great to do that.

Beyond that we will have to see.  Maybe some better vacations will be an option in the future?

Holding until it hits high four digit numbers or the promised land of the five digit 10k range. At that point I'll probably just sell off all my coins and invest it into more conservative instruments. I'll use a chunk of it to travel and then probably put the rest of it away for retirement.

...

I have actually changed my mind on this subject (HODL vs. spend BTC).  My original plans were to just not sell them at all (any or hardly any), and wait for the price to go WAY UP, then cash some in for gold.

I have thought that over since this latest spike.  I will now likely to buy gold as BTC prices go up, say, 30% quickly or reach $550 or so whichever comes first.  But, I will always hang on to enough BTC that should the price go to $5000 or more then it will meaningfully change my life.

Not a bad idea, im like you, i mean that i have some ítems here that i really dont need, maybe is time to convert them into btc if possible ofc.

Btw about the main question my plan is just to hold a Little bit more, because im pretty sure that the current price is nothing compared witch what is coming ;), the recent increased Price dont help me to get a Little bit more of cheap bitcoins.

My plan was always to recoup my investment capital and then only to invest the profits. I have done that and I am now setting my goals on eliminating all my debt with the investment profits, I make from Bitcoin. I want to free myself from any further involvement with debt, either from banks or other financial institutions. A debt free life, will be a joyfull life.  ;D

I have been the hamster running in the little debt wheel, it is time to open the cage! Time to live.  8)

We are so focus on paying debt and interest on debt, that we do not take opportunities to enjoy life. When you open your eyes and all debt are paid, you are left with a burnt out body and no energy to enjoy the fruits of your labor.  ::)

My plan is to increase the amount of coins I have each month. With a lower Bitcoin price it's much easier to convert fiat into Bitcoin. Glad I have started with it months before the price started to sky rocket. As long as it stays below $400 I will continue with buying Bitcoin.

I will just hold a decent amount of Bitcoins for the future, as I believe in it and think that its price will be higher by then. After that, I would take some of my Bitcoins from another wallet and buy a miner with it.  ;D

gentlemand

The severe price spike as well as lingering doubts that Bitcoin will be as permanent as I would like helped me realize that as I make some profit that some of that should be cashed in for gold.

I have no special insight into nor deep knowledge of Bitcoin to really know what will happen.  Uncertainty suggests to me that caution is not a bad idea.

I'm looking forward to selling quite a bit in 2016 when block rewards halve.
I think it's great that we're seeing these mini bubbles, it sets the tone for what's about to come I think.

Plan to keep what I have and grow it when possible for now. If the price does rise substantially (no hurry) I'd like to sell just enough to recoup my investment - at that point it's basically all profit, let's see where this goes.

For some reason, bitcoin maybe can help you a bit, but not for big money.

Many people loss a lot too on BTC. We need to see the fact, not only opinion or hope.

That is so wise and the best you can do! Get rid off those damn debts. The only one you're doing a favour with this are the stupid banks.
I guess when you've reached that goal you will feel like a completely new person. Debts make you a slave to banks. After that you will be free.
And for the future continue getting bitcoins of course.Never stop doing this! :)

This is a good strategy. At least you get your original investment back. It works well when you sell at a very high price so the left over investment is still worth a lot.

From your post, i see you really believes in bitcoin until you give many of your money to invest in BTC (from your daughter collage and charities).

IMHO, after the BTC losing streak from Nov 2013 until now. That's quite possible BTC can going up back or maybe more than Nov 2013 price.
But in term of "Best Wise Decision", invest it with good amount of money that not give too much effect if something bad happen is good for me.

Hope it good for you too.

For sure I will hold. Or to tell better. I will hold mines. Everyone has its strategies about bitcoin and no one can give mind in what to do. Because bitcoin price is unpredictable. Everyone can tell only what he will do with him's bitcoins. And to explain him's why. I will hold my bitcoins because I hope to a much more higher price than the actual one. This mean hold those maybe for long time. But i will wait.

The first good sign that make me happy and make me 'wonder" about my dreams connected with bitcoin is its behavior the last bubble. The price rose with about 100% and then drop for about 50%. It is the 4 or 5 days today that the price is stable. If bitcoin will continue with this price this is the first sign that the theory about bitcoin have sense and can be verified. Everyone of use predicted before that with the spread of bitcoin will be higher price and less volatility. As it was told the increase of price was as a consequence of the higher demand from China. Not a speculation. The actual price testify that the increase of the demand (which normally mean more spread of knowledge about it and need to have some or more) brought a higher price. And less volatility. It was only one bubble. So, what was hoped was verified. If it will continue in this way (go high 100% and drop 50 or in other figures but the second one always less than the first) everyone of us has reason to have more true hopes about it.

Those hopes are one more reason for me to hold those.

Did you just hold it?
or maybe you are also trading your BTC. When the btc price going up almost 100%, sell..
and buy again when the price becomes normal?

I believes bitcoin price will keep going up (in my opinion) but just hold it and not to sell it until few years, i think that way only for big investment and not for people who just hold under 10BTC.

Yours are only words. How do you know that it will go down after 100% of increase? How do you know that the 100% will be the final higher price? If it will go 300% and then drop 100%? Or go 400% and stay there? I have lost my bitcoins forever in every of cases mentioned by me in this post. No one know the behavior of bitcoin. If you try to speculate with it you can lose (or win). I don't prefer to risk. That's why i want and prefer only to hold.

Earlier this year I was full of doubt about holding bitcoin as price seems stagnant and unresponsive to any kind of good news.
But after last pump I am more optimistic that my holding pays of in the future. So until price won't reach $1000 I will hold 99% of my coins.

The way I see it, Bitcoin's price is being decreased slowly. Still, it is better than it was before ($235), but I think my excitement is over until the price ever goes back to $1000. As of now, I would just hold up my BTC stash until the price goes up a little bit more and then I would use some of it to buy something cool.  ;D

With my current BTC stash, I would just use only 75% of my Bitcoins and the rest would be used for savings and storing them safely on paper wallets for the future. I have a great feeling that the price would be double or even triple than the current price right now in the future.  :D

Im going to buy 2,100 BTC, so in the future, i have the knowledge that I own 0.1% of all the bitcoin in existence.

After that, I'm going to hodl until bitcoin hits $2100 and sell 21 BTC every 21 days at exactly $2100. :D

That is a lot of money to invest at, if you can afford 2100 BTC you are already rich.

BTC will be way higher than $2100 in the future, 4 figures are nothing at all, once we break 1K again, we will not stop at 2K for long.

Well, gotta have some patience too.

You might regret selling too quickly when the price goes down

If you can't invest into bitcoin a lot right now, you can start out small, forget about it and look back in a couple of years

I'm going to keep staking my Bitcoins, until I reach a desirable amount to invest it on cloud mining with Hashnest, as I would certainly love to buy Antminer S7 hashrate. 500Gh/s or more would be good enough for me. Then, I would sell the hashrate at a later time for profit (at a higher price).  ;D

I will hold BTC until it reaches 2000USD to sell 25% and invest it in Real Estate. I had plans for real estate investment, but due to the potential I saw in BTC I invested the whole in BTC. I would like to hold the remaining BTC for my retirement.

I'm going to just hold.  I don't have a lot of bitcoin and I've made the mistake in the past of selling investments waaaay too soon and I don't want to make it again.  My feelings about bitcoin go back and forth between optimism and extreme skepticism.  Never really pessimistic because the community is so strong and ardent, but I do question its utility a lot.  So I'm just going to hold.  Actually, to state it more precisely, I'm going to accumulate it slowly and not sell.

Yaah, I hear that!  Selling an investment way too soon...  Optimism and extreme skepticism, hear that too (maybe when they get the blocksize debate over with things will improve).

I just bought platinum today with some BTC, other than Au and Pt, I will HODL my Bitcoin.  Platinum is hard to get.

And refill my stash when I can at the two BTMs in my city, even though they charge a 9% premium and require ID.

I trade roughly 30% of holdings, mostly to opportunistically hedge on the downside.

I plan to hold for at least 5 years, accumulating on pullbacks.

The US is fraught with political risk at the moment.

There is a small but significant risk that the next President could impose a Tobin tax and capital controls.

BTC is an excellent hedge against this contingency.

I think this is a rather unique setup. It's so young, fragile and unproven still so those swings of emotion are pretty inevitable. I can't imagine you'd witness the extremes of sentiment on an Apple share forum.

It will take some time but its worth the waiting time.

I think the only plan you should have is to accumulate bitcoin and nothing else. Otherwise, you can try trading sometimes, which can in turn earn you a decent amount of money.

I am now accumulating bitcoin from whatever sources I can and I have no plans to sell it in a near future. I trust, bitcoin price will go way higher than what it is standing now. Probably I will add some spices to my retired life using my bitcoin in future.

I'm interested to hear everyone's thoughts.

my plans with my bitcoins are pretty simple, i will keep them for some time and sell them when their price will be higher that 1000$

of course if i will need something really fast i will spend them but  i try to avoid that, and  of course i don't sell them if their price flals down

My plan?  Pretty much as it has always been:

"HODL and gold"

Both are likely to do well in likely upcoming economic turbulence.

Note that I am NOT recommending holding BTC and gold ONLY.  A well diversified set of assets is almost always safer, and yet can provide above average returns (above average because the "average investor" does rather poorly).

I mine, hold and use some bitcoins. When the price is higher than $5k, I will increase my spending, spend most of the mined coins and hold the rest.
I will also hold on to my coins until the price is nice and high, when the price reaches a price I am okay with I am going to sell them all and stop with Bitcoin for good.
Bitcoin was fun but it takes allot of waiting.

I have a very aggressive strategy.

I have put my life savings into bitcoin. Whenever it goes up 10 times, I will sell 10%. My buy in was $270, so I will sell my first coins when it's at $2700.

When bitcoin is $27,000 I will sell another 10%. This will be the first time I will make a penny of profit.

I don't even feel this is risky. I have holdings in all the major altcoins as well and will follow the same strategy with them. If bitcoin goes kaboom, I am confident another coin will pick up the slack.

With the price steadily on the upswing, I plan to hold, then I will buy when there are dips so my average cost would not be too big. I'll try to be patient with my strategy and not be tempted to sell right away. I'll also set targets for selling and buying price, sort of keeping my emotions intact.

Well, I don't think that bitcoin is ever going to crash from hereby on. I think we're going all bull from here. Hoarding is probably the best option available to you right now, because of the halving.

But yeah, if you really want to protect yourself, go for the fiat.

First and foremost when you are dealing with bitcoin trading pertaining to buy and sell you must have a target. You must target when to sell your bitcoins on what price on what increase. Do not target high target since that is risky to be safe small targets of btc increase is safe enough. But given the situation of btc today i suggest that you should hoard your bitcoins, the limited supply of bitcoins would mean another increase on btc monetary value.

I do not have really big plans for my Bitcoin stash I am just holding on to them for the future because I really want to sell right now but I cannot.
If I am going to sell right now then I am going to make less money, so I wait for the price to be higher.

I think you are speculating that bitcoin will at least reach one thousand US dollar, so you are hugging your Bitcoins that tight coz you are worried that selling them at this point will make you lose about 300USD if it hit 1k USD.  Why not roll it to investment?  If it is the legit one, it will at least multiply your holdings.

Why would your goal be to sell them in the end? That's really ass-backwards. If you just HODL your coins you wouldn't have to worry about the ups and downs.. just let it ride and someday you'll look back and think $1000/BTC was cheap.

Why would your goal be to sell them in the end? That's really ass-backwards. If you just HODL your coins you wouldn't have to worry about the ups and downs.. just let it ride and someday you'll look back and think $1000/BTC was cheap.
Yeah but getting it sold and bought back can make you bigger profit. If you do it smart,i would prefer it than just waiting
for BTC go to moon.Maybe it will happen maybe it will not.
For me its better to predict the price and get money on fluctuations.

In order to increase my bitcoins, I will sell some when we have a price increase and then buy back when it drops again. It's not easy to catch the highs and lows and you never know if it will just go up and never come back down, so there are risks to doing this.

I do not have a real good plan for my bitcoin stash but what I'm doing now is holding it for a while and wait on a good price.
I really hope with the halving that is coming this year I can make some good money but of course we will see if this is possible.

I use some bitcoin to pay for some service. Otherwise, I have no use. So I will save them. The price will rise any way.

I strongly believe that if you are no a pro investor or speculator then the best option for you is just forget about your bitcoin stash for a moment.
You can occasional add coins to it, but don't sell. Wake up in - say - 4 or 5 years around 2020 and see what happened to the price.

Important part is NOT to believe in any FUD stories about supposed bitcoin collapse. It won't collapse even if superior coins will emerge in the future.

I think that long-term holding strategies could work, potentially speaking, but you should also check the value of Bitcoin at least once every week if you're doing that, to make sure your investment isn't losing more than you want in the event that it does go down.

Bitcoin will more than likely never be surpassed, even if superior coins emerge, because no-one will know about them or really care about them.

:( When I remember how much I sold  BTC at a price $ 4 ..... now I prefer to keep them.
I do not have any plans with my stash at the moment, I am just going to wait for the moment that I can sell some coins.
Spending them is not an option at the moment because I do not really need anything that I can buy with Bitcoin.

What I meant is that altcoins will never match Bitcoin because the distribution of bitcoin is considered to be perfect only because at some point Bitcoin had absolutely no value.
There can be technically advanced coins created with better properties that bitcoin, faster confirmation times, more anonymous or with anti scam safeguard.
But there will be no coin which manifest this particular characteristic of Bitcoin - near perfect initial distribution.

I plan on holding on to that until a price comes by that I want to sell my coins for, I think that I will sell when the price is $1000.
I will not sell them all because there is always a chance that the price is going to be higher after I sold.

You should then only hold on to them and sell them when you can make a profit.

my plan is hodling bitcoin until it becomes a global currency and reaches an stage when i can spend it everywhere just like fiat and then i will take it out of my cold storage and start spending and by then my stash would be worth a lot.

and until then i will only spend when i need to and try my best to add to my stash over time.

My plan is to use half of my BTC for now in trading and the other half I will hold for future use. My trading capital is still small that's why when I buy bitcoin I will use half as an addition to my trading capital and the other half I will hold.

You are not getting it and are still deeply infected by the fiat disease. Why would anyone in his/her right money exchange sound money (Bitcoin) into crappy money (fiat)? The point of owning Bitcoin is not speculating on the inevitable devaluation of fiat currency (leading to a corresponding price increase of Bitcoin), the point is ending the era of the fiat scam altogether. The correct anchor point for value comparisons is Bitcoin, not fiat, which is subject to interventionist policy and inflationary devaluation.

So my "strategy" for Bitcoin is pretty simple: Buy, hodl, and use it as money to buy goods and services. I'm glad that it's still possible to get something as valuable as Bitcoin for all the fiat junk - thanks to all the trader type speculators that are eager to sell it... :D

Mine is more like loose change, rather than stash, compared to those who own a lot of bitcoins. I really don't have any immediate plans for what I have. I will just continue holding for as long as I can see that it is still worth holding them. This is more like another form of speculative investment which could potentially give huge returns if I would just be patient.

I would not have expected to read such stuff from a legendary user. Are you truly just buying Bitcoin out of speculative reason to divest them and hold on to fiat scam money? For me it's pretty clear, that Bitcoin is superior money. Selling Bitcoin for fiat scam money feels like the most stupid idea ever - it's like offloading gold to receive a few buckets of slurry in return.

So my plan for Bitcoin is crystal clear: HODL. :D I will never sell my Bitcoin for fiat. I will use it in future to buy goods and services directly. I will use it the way it is meant to be: As a free decentralized currency.

Edit: I just realized that I replied to OP's post twice. Sorry for that. But sometimes emotions take control over memory... :)

Because the rate of bitcoins right now is nothing compared to what it would be in the future, I'm planning to make as much bitcoins as I can right now. Bitcoin is just starting and we're basically the pioneers of bitcoins. Depending on how my personal life would go, I'm going to sell some of my coins every now and then but I would definitely leave 1BTC or more for the future.

Once I found a good day job, I would most probably be too busy to do bitcoins. All I can do at those times is to hold bitcoins and then enjoy the money that I'll get from holding it in the far future.

I will just keep on earning some bitcoin ang just keep it in my wallet.  I lack interest with joining investment sites because of the high possibility of being scammed.  Either way holding and keeping bitcoin in my wallet is sure to have gain a good amount of money in return.  Then I would sell some if the need arise and still continue to earn.

Somehow I don't have too much expanses at the moment, so every month there is a little money available I do not know what to do with.
That goes into my btc stash. And I'm not planing to sell somewhen in the near future.
Maybe it will be worth a fortune when I go in retirement.

Sounds like a smart plan. Doing that, you would definitely be able to grow your BTC stack in the long term. As for me, I take part of my stack and invest it into grams of Gold, as this asset has been proven to be a safe haven towards protecting your investments in the long term. I have a feeling that Gold price will increase even more in the future, thus increasing my chances of having more Bitcoin whenever I decide to sell it. Also, the rest of my stack goes into a paper wallet for future use when Bitcoin decides to hit $1000 and above.

That being said, it is best to use your BTC stack once in a while, instead of holding all your coins which limits its ability to grow as days go by. Just my opinion.  ;D

Are you really comfortable with this idea? I mean bitcoin is highly disruptive asset it showed out of nowhere and it might disappear like that too.
Do we really know for sure that bitcoin will be used in the future in the time to support your retirement plan? I mean it won't hurt to have BTC but trusting solely in it is not wise IMO.

While I believe that Bitcoin will remain active for years to come, there could be a possibility of its price to decline massively if another exchange hack occurs, among other factors. In order to protect your investments, try to diversify it among different altcoins instead of a single cryptocurrency like Bitcoin. That way, you can always minimize your risk of loss in case Bitcoin fails sometime in the future.

However, as days pass by Bitcoin becomes stronger in user acceptance and popularity. That is why, in my own opinion, if all goes well over the years (with no other event such as an exchange hack) then we could rest assured that the price will continue to rise from $1000 and beyond.

Nevertheless, to be safe, you can always spend a very little amount from your earnings into Bitcoin each month and save them on a paper wallet for future reference. By doing this, you can grow your stash of BTC, knowing that someday in the future it would be worth more than what it is right now. Just sharing my thoughts.  ;D

That actually is right, though we can see great potential in bitcoin but we should not forget that bitcoin is something that was made online and what if it disappears just like that? Who would be able to do something for it as it has never been known or controlled by anyone in real world? So there is always a doubt like that in the minds of people in bitcoin community, including me to be honest.

Honestly i am not still believe that bitcoin will be use for a long time since we are seen some weaknesses of bitcoin.. Satoshi nakamoto always warning us about retirement plan.. that you can found here https://bitcoin.org/en/alerts
So we can not know if bitcoin how long they will live since they are holding a large network and we are growing if the can handle the who network about the problem that will happen in the future we  will still continue using bitcoin if we are lucky. Since bitcoin still have a good value we are still using it and some good news like in paris that they are accepting bitcoin and i think they are motivating more people to use bitcoin..
I am just hoping that bitcoin will live long since this is part of our life and we do business with bitcoin..
