Title: What moves bitcoin price?
Post by: Huobi-USD on November 17, 2015, 08:59:25 AM
For stock exchanges, situations like what happened in Paris with the terrorism attack, means changes in the prices of the stocks, but due to bitcoin is kind of different, for you, what do you have to be in mind when you speculate about the price? I mean, what type of news or kind of doings, you have to keep in your mind to get winner in the bitcoin transactions?

One word - China. Since the day one, Chinese users move the price.
Also, I expect this upcoming block halving to move the price up, big time. However, we still have a few months until this kicks in.

While Chinese market has major impact on BTC price, it is not the only factor, and it is not like China has monopoly and owns bitcoin.
Bitcoin is influenced by overall economic situation of the markets, bad or good news, whales who tries to earn by pumping and dumping and god knows what else.

supply and demand is the most important aspect right now. at this point there are more sellers than buyers. that's why it is so hard to advance to higher price levels. after the block halving it will be completely different.

Bitcoin price depends on supply ad demand , that means when there are a lot of buyers the prices rises and vice versa

The supply of total number of bitcoin is limited to 21 million. But the daily supply of bitcoin is elastic. When the price is high, there are more people will to sell, so the supply is higer. Therefore the price is mainly dependent on bitcoin requirement. When there is more usage of bitcoin, ie higher demand, the price will be higher.

China plays a big part in it

but also supply and demand, it depends a bunch on how much is being mined and bought/traded

I think news about big demand in arrive. Like the last one from China. Were some days before that the price of bitcoin in Chinese exchanges were higher comparing to the others worldwide. One good speculator can find this a signal for probable increase of price because this demand can continue for several days. So try to speculate or to buy. I don't know if someone did this and for sure not me because I am not a trader. But wanted to tell with this example that the possible increase of the demand can affect primarily the price of bitcoin. i don't see any other kind of events which can move it. The flow at the market is stable. I don't think that can be someone who can have amounts of bitcoins which, if introduced in the market, can move the supply in such amount that can affect the price.

At the last bitcoin is out of the interest of various authorities and economies. It is to few to affect the last ones. Even some Governments/Central Banks have fear and have banned it.

at the moment the order of magnitude of real feasible movement, not the silly unrealistic and unexplainable spikes and drops.. is:
1) cost to create -mining costs due to difficulty rises and reward halving
2) exchanges becoming easier to get FIAT into them
3) population growth.

a few people might say the order is wrong. but when you look historically at things like the rise from $12-$200, the majority of that was due to last reward halving.
the spike of $200-$1000, was initially when mining difficulty shot up (first Terrahash miners hit the scene)(followed by china speculation which burst soon after).
and this years change from the $200+ rise, is helped by media and exchanges drumming up new users.

Trading is the same, whether it's stocks, commodities, currencies.. etc.  There's buyers and sellers, pumpers and dumpers, bulls and bears, etc, etc...  The rest is mostly market noise.

You of all people should know this.

Just like the stock market is moved by good and bad news, Bitcoin market gets moved as well by the good and bad news.

Stock market as well gets moved by the speculation just like Bitcoin market does. The only thing is that Bitcoin market is much smaller so we can sense this much faster. Stock market is bigger and this is harder to notice.

In a sense, Bitcoin market and stock market are very similar!

good news move it, china move it but only if there reason to move it, it could be because of the mining(the halving) or because of the good news about trading in china

The more bitcoin buyers there are the more it will increase (demand)

China has somewhat to do with it, not exactly sure how but if someone could explain this to me, that would be awesome and i'd learn another new thing today!

Though i don't know much about the trading stuff, but i strongly think that any good news and more buy orders than sell orders increases the demand of bitcoins on exchange , which pushes the bitcoin prices up.

A Bitcoin exchange getting hacked, or a dark market exit scam moves the price. If enough bitcoins have been stolen there is a huge crash after the bad news gets out. The bitstamp hack and evolution dark market exit scams both resulted in huge crashes after the bad news got out.

Bitcoin price is very volatile and has seen some large fluctuations Since its inception in 2011 when you could buy bitcoin few cents Since that bitcoin price raise every year and day. Now according to today's rate its 336.90$ as you said because demand also its going for price globally

I forgot about Gox and China. When Gox announced the hack and bankruptcy the bad news moved the price immediately down big time. Bad news of China's first bitcoin ban also crashed the price, but news of each successive ban is having less effect because we know they aren't serious bans now.

No serious players so far, mostly speculators and manipulators. If there are more people who understand why bitcoin is much more superior than fiat money, then situation will be totally different, but it takes lots of effort for anyone to understand that, maybe decades or never

The media exposure of bitcoin is not a lot. In 2000 and a few years later, there were many TV ads about internet companies such as Amazon or ebookers.com. They used traditional bill post. So many people saw the ads on road. There are not many bitcoin servicing company facing the general public. We should build the infrastructure around bitcoin so it can be accepted by most people.

We must establish trust and knowledge. These two things are essential when it comes to convincing new people to step into Bitcoin just to try and experience the benefits. There is already plenty of infrastructure available. We just need to convince the average joe's to make use of it.

One that hasn't been mentioned yet is capital controls by banks. When they start limiting how you can get at your own fiat in your own bank account bitcoin starts getting more notice. Wait until banks start trying to actually ban cash and impose negative interest rates on us. What do you do, leave your money in the bank or change it to something that avoids the negative interest rate ?

Capital controls was at least partially behind spike when Cyprus happened and recent spike due to Chinese.

This does not apply everyday. Nothing bad or necessarily good is happening right now.

I think what moves bitcoin price the most is when people are buying more bitcoins. The more demand there is for bitcoins, the higher the price will be.

It's easy to say so, but no one knows exactly what is making the price go up right now. People said in the previous rally that it was due to people who are buying before the block halving, and people were guessing the price would reach a minimum of $700. But the opposite happened. It went down very HARD after reaching $500. Whatever it is causing the current rise, it's nice :)

For now, Black Friday is the one who moves bitcoin price.
There are already few pump & dump in few days, and there'll more when Black Friday coming.

So, not only chinise market, but also special events which moves bitcoin price.

These pump and dump is too small. It does not affect the bitcoin price too much. Black Friday will have little effect too. We shall find the impact in the next few days.

Bitcoin being news driven is partly true. When there is some really great news, it barely affects the price. But when bad news pops up, then the price is going down. I think it will take a few more years before even bad news have no impact on Bitcoin anymore.

I do believe there are many factors driving the Bitcoins prices. I think a good place to start could be other kinds of assets, most notable stocks, fiats, bonds, gold and oil. When this kind of assets loses value, the interest in the Bitcoins could rise, because of people always wanting to make money, then it is logical than people would invest in the assets with the biggest ROIC. The demand on the coin increases, and simply demand/supply theory says the price goes up.

Yes speculating upcoming halving must be a big drive force for bitcoin prices in recent times. Because everyone is competing to catch a good buying price. In this way those who bought around $240 levels are a definite ultimate winners already.

Yes, speculation must be a one of the prime mover of bitcoin prices. In long term everyone believes bitcoin prices will goes to very much higher prices. This is because of the capped nature of total supply of bitcoin. So with the limited supply of bitcoin prices everyone always speculate it will go to higher price definitely.

I am not convinced news is a major mover of price compared to the stock market. Take 2014 as a perfect example...sure, Gox collapsing at the beginning of the year had a major negative effect on the price, but bitcoin companies raised $315 million in VC funding that year.

I think the market is greatly manipulated by bigger players. I think it is only logical an unregulated and volatile market will attract those types.

Title: Re: What moves bitcoin price?
Post by: MatTheCat on January 09, 2016, 02:55:30 AM
What moves Bitcoin price, are Bitcoin whales.

Everything else is illusion. So called 'fundamentals' are simply faerie stories that are used to 'explain' whale interventions which may be totally idiosyncratic, or indeed, the whale interventions may be timed to coincide with 'Fundamental Events', such as the pump that occured on the 2nd 7% China Stock Market drop.

'News' event occurs. Whales start Painting the Tape and ramping, market particpants put 2 and 2 together, and get 22, and pile in. Thus market rises. 'Explanation' in peoples heads is that market is rising, due to Chinese flooding into Bitcoin, but infact, the market has risen, because people believe that this is occuring, or will occur sometime in the future. Had the whales behind the CNY exchanges started dumping on the 7% Stock Market drop, then the 'explanation' would have been, 'Chinese investors liquidiating Bitcoin positions to cover losses in stock market'.

Nothing annoys me more than the volume of false paradigms that are propagated on places like this (and in investment media in general) and end up passing for reality. But buy into any of it, and you will pay the price, because far more often than not, believing in bullshit only pays off, until one day it doesn't pay off, and in spectacular fashion.

News isn't moving the Bitcoin price unless it's very bad news. Good news has barely any impact anymore nowadays. Many people think that certain companies/startups who raise millions are good for the price. That isn't the case. None of that money is being invested in Bitcoin as coin. That's why it doesn't have an effect on the price.

There are many factors which are usually moving bitcoin prices either up or down. The basic rule for any commodity is supply and demand. Usually supply and demand will move the price for for any commodity but in bitcoin ecosystem we have constants supply for every four years. So, demand plays a big role in moving bitcoin prices.

Had the same thinking. China is the one which decides the price. Now also the china market has fallen a bit high when compared to other countries. This has lead to a decrease in the value of bitcoin. No matter who decides it should benefit humans.

news has barely any impact anymore on the price. only very bad news can impact the price in a bad way. hacked exchanges, governments seizing/freezing all funds of the exchanges and such. at this point the only news that can affect the bitcoin price in a good way is when we find a solution for the block size. then you'll see a pump happen.

Also, I expect this upcoming block halving to move the price up, big time. However, we still have a few months until this kicks in.
Had the same thinking. China is the one which decides the price. Now also the china market has fallen a bit high when compared to other countries. This has lead to a decrease in the value of bitcoin. No matter who decides it should benefit humans.

also i'm quite convinced that Chinese users greatly affect on bitcoin price. huge market and particularly because of the cheap development mining hardware

Unlike any other commodity, bitcoin has most influential factor for deciding it's price levels, it is network's difficulty levels. When more bitcoin miners enters into mining bitcoin then we can expect the price raise of bitcoins. The vice versa also true.

If more people want bitcoin, its price will rise. It is quite simple. It is not affected by mining difficulty. If the price drop, miners will turn off their miners.

the price is purely build up on the demand, that's right. the difficulty simply adjusts itself to whatever the current price is. if there is low demand, then the result of that is a lower price, and that might result in a lower or less higher difficulty. from time to time you can see the potential difficulty increase will be 8%, if the price comes down for whatever reason, you can then see the difficulty go down from 8% to around 5%.

It also has something to do with demand and supply
Less supply and more demand means that bitcoin will rise in value.

Some of what moves the bitcoin price also has to do with stock markets.

Yes ultimately bitcoin is completely different from other commodities by having some definite supply for some particular period, which is highly different from gold kind of commodities. So, only the demand and future speculation of supply will influence the bitcoin prices.

This might be a reason and there are even some say that due to bitcoins getting accumulated over few people the bitcoin price moves. The market strategies of china impacted the bitcoin. Likewise we are hearing various predictions.

Unlike any stockmarket, bitcoin prices cannot be pump are dumped in overnight. Because we are having exchange all over the world and the sentiment of traders all over the world will not be same. So, bitcoin prices is not influenced to buy a single trading group of people.

I feel that news and stability about the blocksize, scandals (cryptsy, bitcoin used by criminals) etc. move the price in a good measure, but there is also some influence of people/big holders buying and selling to make the price move.

A big whale can open accounts in many exchanges and buy/sell at the same time. That will affect price in many exchanges. Some people will also do arbitrage, that will also make the price change in  the opposite direction.

Yes, bitcoin is rapidly spreading out to many new people around the world just like new technology. So, the demand for bitcoin is increasing rapidly on daily basis and we have constant supply of bitcoin per day. This will make bitcoin prices to move up. Demand is the prime factor for bitcoin also for price moving.

Since you can't analyze earnings or business prospects per se with bitcoin, the price of btc is very sensitive to news.  Like the recent Mike Hearn comments--that alone was responsible for at least part of the drop we've seen.  And enthusiasm for bitcoin waxes and wanes, and the buy and sell orders are always fighting each other.  That's what moves markets.  More buyers=price rise.  More sellers=price drop.

He was not donated big codes in bitcoin. He is nothing according to me. Price is pumping because of demand of bitcoin and mining level makes decision of bitcoin price. Dump is happening happening its because if less interest and less awareness of bitcoin.
After halving I guess bitcoin will stand in steady race and steady price.

You of all people should know this.
Yes this is true but, if you think about gold for example why gold does not have such great rises and downfalls like bitcoin? Why gold has more or less stable price..? Bitcoin is still very young and he is speculative. Fear and FUD are included in determining price in some moments.
And of course Whales!!!

Based on economics, it was clear that it was supply and demand. If the bitcoin users hoard some bitcoin to buyers, it will increase the demand because there are not too many sellers to sustain the demand of buyers that will lead to the rise of value of bitcoin. :D Supply < Demand = ^ Value of bitcoin and vice versa.

The conclusion is easy the real spikes are created by china and the little are create by the people that are investing and selling.

Also include the people who are just holding bitcoin and god knows when will they let go of their coin,i think they are waiting for the halving since it will bring a nice price to them.

those that are holding bitcoin for a very high value to sell are somehow embroiled in forcing a value increase in the future, because they are making more valuable the other coins that remain in the market

so i can assume that holder can drive the demand up, they are a precursor of the demand

I used to think it is influenced by the news & media. But these days i expect that the price is influenced by whales and so.
Just look how the price did go up the last couple of months without any relevant news..

Whales and chinese miners are manipulating the prices right now thats why you can see it constantly going down.
They just want to buy more bitcoin so that when halving comes they will profit more.

They are still thinking if the price should go down to 300 before the halving so that they can buy more coins and after that they price will be higher.

Yes many people are still dreaming like that. But as per my analysis and speculations, we have came far away from $300 price levels for ever. Hopefully, we can see bitcoin prices testing above $1000 levels by the time of halving.

For stock exchanges, situations like what happened in Paris with the terrorism attack, means changes in the prices of the stocks, but due to bitcoin is kind of different, for you, what do you have to be in mind when you speculate about the price? I mean, what type of news or kind of doings, you have to keep in your mind to get winner in the bitcoin transactions?

china moves bitcoin price form day 1, china is very important for bitcoin, of course supply and demand changes price, huge things like things in paris last year creates a panic, or  when somebody else creates panic, and then price falls down, there are lots of reasons why price rises or falls

Everything moves the price. Because it also depend on the chinese and the economics. So that is really important.
But you can see that the value is rising slowly and that is very good also. But the halving is also coming so that is good. But you never know what will happen.

the bitcoin price goes up if people want to buy bitcoins and they keep on buying but if there is no interest and people sell coins there is a big drop

bitcoin is a decentralized currency and it will never be regulated by any government thats one of the best things about it

It depends on the people how much they use Bitcoin and how much they spend it. It will also be good if it will be more acceptable in stores.
So we can spend it more and people will get to know about Bitcoin and that is very good.

huge panic waves drops price of bitcoin for sure, lit cna drop by 100$ or even more if panic is huge

china changes price of bitcoin form day 1, they change it now too

and probably most important thing that changes price is supply and demand, if nobody would buy, price would be very small

There is no panic waver at the present. People are used to 20% a day volatility. The volatility will be lower in the future.

Supply and demand along with the market situation moves the price of bitcoin. One more major factor moving the bitcoin price is the speculation made by most of the users.

Most people get this confused.

Theres 2 different forms of demands that generate the price. 1. The big whale - which can fufill its order of the mass 2. The mass that actual find bitcoin

Also China changes price and don't forget large panic or halving,  they change price too

Supply and demand is the real reason why bitcoin prices changes constantly and add to that miners also do some part in changing the price.

Fundamentally, supply and demand determines the bitcoin price. But it will be affected by sentiment as well.

I think the speculators move the price mostly then it's the Bitcoin publicity which can be negative or positive and can move the price accordingly, Bitcoin issues like the Blocksize debate, news about Bitcoin being used by criminals and terrorists etc. Bitcoin is just super volatile and its movement can depend on so many different factors it's very hard to predict.

In long term, the price shall be higher. But it also depends on the continuous development of the protocol.
