Bitcoin Core developers including Gavin Andresen expanded on their more substantial vision for bitcoin advancement at an MIT event yesterday.

There is no need for bitcoin to do that. Monero and Dash can already achieve anonymous transaction. Bitcoin should remain a transparent money.

Anonymity and transactional privacy are not mutually exclusive. Adam Back ably pointed out that anonymity is simply a by-product of fungible money, and so any improvements to privacy/anonymity only contribute further to Bitcoin's inherent money-like properties.
