Title: [Developing] Altcoin Voting Platform
Post by: Coinbuddy on January 24, 2016, 07:15:54 AM
Hi
I am thinking of making an altcoin voting site, like first users have verify their account by connecting social media accounts (or any other type for confirmation). Then they can vote for the altcoin, but i want Altcoin Exchange site to trust our platform without this it will be unsuccessful.

I thought that One vote per IP per Giveaway+No proxies+No VPNs is best option

How do you think?

Actually a good idea. The main challenge for such a site will be to prevent voting fraud. Either you have good anti-fraud detection features or you need to add registration for instance, what will discourage people to vote.

Is it just about fraud voting? i

I have some ideas in my mind like sms verification, social accounts connections

You have concluded the project by mention trust and exchangers but i know for certain that crypto exchange platform like to be independent and dont expect corporations from all of them especially those that charge per vote.

I will not allow paid votes! It should be very transparent platform, so we can convince the crypto exchange sites.
In this way maybe: 1st sms verification, then they vote for the coin, select the exchange and its votes accepted.

I refused to "verify" to get my free NEUcoins and I surely am not going to "verify" to vote on some altcoins.. Maybe you can think of something better.

would you like to connect 3 social accounts?

I don't have 3 social accounts..

What exactly is the point of this voting site? I see that you say exchanges need to trust it and I suspect that means that you want the exchanges to add coins based off of the votes on this site, but I'm not sure.

How about One vote per IP per altcoin and No proxies and VPN allowed?

In the market people vote with their wallets, which is arguably the better measure. I think there could be an Altcoin launch platform ("mints") where the mint provides some infrastructure for the project, e.g. contacts to exchanges, development expertise, legal expertise, etc. In turn a mint requires some significant interest behind a project (new ideas, new code, ...). In general connecting social accounts is probably a good idea (see also keybase.io). It might make sense to use some algorithms to determine truthfulness of the account (github with lots of commits and starred repos is close to impossible to fake). A mint could also be a place for discussion, which has some different mechanics than Bitcointalk. BTT is 90's style bulletin board and never build for this purpose.

Altough a voting site is a great idear, i would never connect any social accounts nor verify my cellphone number to cast a vote...

Other suggestions on verifying:
- emailaccount (altough i would never give that out to cast a vote either)
- 1 vote/ip (can be circumvented)
- signed message from an address holding coins (can be circumvented)

But i have found that one vote per IP per altcoin, no proxies and no VPNs is best option. It is no hassles for voter. They don't even need to register on the website.

SMS verification is the fairest. It is essentially one vote per mobile phone number. One vote per IP is the simplest but can be easily gamed in all sorts of ways including by using a dial up modem connection. Social media accounts is by far the worst. Why are you making providing all your personal information to the NSA a condition of voting on altcoins?  Seriously.

I voted for SMS verification.

Thank you for your opinion.
Hmm! It is much transparent way than all of them, maybe we can also use Authy as well, but let's see how much votes we get on it.

You install app on your phone, code is sent and then then we put it on website and it get verified :D

Also Google Authenticator can be helpful

It should have a signed message as well. But such voting may not be applicable to every audience as it will take some time for everyone to learn what cryptocurrency is for and its features. Human nature is hard nosed to change so you got to explain it to everyone very patiently. How about making use of colored coins.

Hmm. not everyone have deep knowledge about Crypto Currency.I think SMS is more transparent and much feasible

I don’t like to give contact detail of my mobile. That is not a safe thing and I don’t want to share this information.

I think the best way is really IP-related. That seems to be legit and you will also get more voters then with the other options.

Its a mix response yet, some people says SMS verification some says IP address. But SMS verification is much secure and transparent then IP-address.

Can't you give people a choice to verify by SMS or by vote from IP?

I would implement just a captcha voting, similar to faucets. Additionally user has to provide an address for the coin he is voting. Then you only accept votes with different addresses and ips.

Still you could fake it, but not so easily.

I talked with C-CEX, they said we already have one vote per IP, please do something different that that! We need to think something out of the box.

Well, I don't know how many IT guys we have here who have access to several customer site, but for example I can reach almost 90 customer sites with ssh, VLC or remote desktop access to local servers. That means nearly 90 votes. As all remote sites have dual internet connection if I'm doing this at night and spend some time on changing the routing priority and briefly swap sites to the backup ISP, I can double my votes. By using some mobile networks (5-6 phones) and free WiFi hotspots what I know, I can add something like 20 more votes. So, with this quick and dirty solution I've made some 200(ish) votes :). I think using IP as an ID is not a really good solution.
Using SMS is probably better, as right now I have access only to 5 phones and I can ask some friends to help me with more, and I can also use some "receive SMS online for free" services but I wouldn't be able to get more than 30 votes, what is an order of magnitude less than the IP based approach :).

Exactly...
Instead of SMS how about using Google Authenticator? that sends a code to your smartphone in google auth app and then you put that on website it you added a vote.

Google Authenticator looks like a good idea but there are some flaws. Running Android as a virtual machine is a common practice, and since WinAuth is also available for Windows PCs I can install as much "Google Authenticators" as I want, therefore theoretically I can make infinite votes. However as I would need to put some effort in making a lot of votes, my willingness to do so would depend on the expected profit. So GA could work if the profit doesn't worth the effort. I think SMS is still the best method.

SMS is the most fair method I think. It can be gamed, but it would cost someone something to heavily game it. All other methods can be heavily gamed at no costs.

Yes!
It secure, but most the people don't like to give their personal details like phone number for just voting

People can create lot of emails and verify them selves!
