Well I don't know why people hate demurrage. I think it is a good idea for an along-with-bitcoin cryptocurrency. Although I think a demurrage of 2.5% would be the right amount (From my Islamic background point of view).

But basically in the state of Islam (which means any place where they implement islamic laws), one require to give up 2.5% of personal savings to the poor.

There are a lot of specific rationales and details But specifically for precious metals (mining and storing), Whenever you own a total of what equals around 85grams of gold that did not move around or spent for personal use for a whole year, You are required to give away the equivalent of 2.5% of your savings worth to the poor.

The 2.5% is from the "zakat", It was not called demurrage but it certainly fit the definition. The article called "zakat" as tax. But it differs from tax because you are not required to pay it to specific authority for redistribution as services. You can do it yourself or pay someone to do it for you. This "Zakat" was for specific possessions (Cattle, Precious metals and else) which are kept and not spent in a specific period of time (a year mostly).

P.S. Yes there is no such thing as "Interest rate" in Islam. It is forbidden.
