So if you look above last two jumps were decent maybe rates are going to continue to be stable for a while maybe not.

contest rules are not changed.

we start picks on the 600th block and end picks on the 1200th

below are a few of last months picks including the winner

+4.2 = VirosaGITS

+4.4 = ingiltere

+5.0 = tlhIlwI
+5.1 = wlefever
+5.2 = blindminer
+5.4 = alh

the contest winner is in bold.

okay You need a 30 post minimum
you need to be on site since Jan 31 2016

this is {b]free[/b] so if you make a pick you abide by my rules.
only 1 entry  once you make it  you can not change it.

I now have .5 btc to give away.
This starts at .1 btc but if everyone misses it I will roll it over.

Lastly I plan to add enough btc to this to go 1 week past the ½ ing

At that point I may change the format quite a bit.

Picks do not start until the 600th block but feel free to spec.

yup. making this the 201st diff period

Block 403201 was made at

 403201 (Main Chain) 2016-03-18 09:50:30

403241 (Main Chain)   2016-03-18 17:18:25

40 blocks in  7 hours and 20 minutes   should be  44 blocks so we are real time -10%

Congrats to the winner, well guessed!

So basically the last two adjustments have cancelled each other out, I think we can all be happy with that.  Hopefully diff will stay flat now until new hardware makes its way on to the scene.

Congratz to winner.  It was under 5 so I feel we all won a little, no big jumps... so that is good.

We are losing value on BTC which stinks.  A little over 10 dollars in a day is not a fun jump.

Block 403201 was made at

 403201 (Main Chain) 2016-03-18 09:50:30

403267 (Main Chain)   2016-03-18 22:40:02

67 blocks in  12 hours and 50 minutes   should be  77 blocks

so we are " real time "    67/77 -1  = -12.987%   very early but very nice numbers.

Congrats ingiltere!

Mining is so surprising!  2015 was a great year to mine.  Can't say so for 2016 up to now...

Anyone has inside info from Bitfury, Bitmain, Canaan or any other manufacturer to help us set the next difficulty change?   ;)

Block 403201 was made at

 403201 (Main Chain) 2016-03-18 09:50:30

403297 (Main Chain)   2016-03-19 03:06:38

97 blocks in  17 hours and 30 minutes   should be  105 blocks

so we are " real time "    97/105 -1  =  (-7.619%)    very early but very nice numbers.

update  block 403344

403344 (Main Chain)   2016-03-19 11:10:25

so this is the 144 block this jump     and was done in 25 hours and 20 minutes    we should have done 152 blocks  so

144/152 - 1 =  (-5.26%)

Not bad

Below is bitcoinwisdom's future guess it is higher because it uses part of last jump which was a positive number

 https://bitcoinwisdom.com/bitcoin/difficulty

Bitcoin Difficulty:   165,496,835,118
Estimated Next Difficulty:   169,085,767,187 (+2.17%)
Adjust time:   After 1872 Blocks, About 13.3 days
Hashrate(?):   1,148,412,808 GH/s
Block Generation Time(?):
1 block: 10.2 minutes
3 blocks: 30.8 minutes
6 blocks: 1.0 hours
Updated:   7:15 (3.1 minutes ago)

and here is bitcoin charts

they are more realtime

https://bitcoincharts.com/

Blocks   403344
Total BTC   15.334M

Difficulty   165496835118
Estimated   164437596179 in 1872 blks

Network total   1163073.842 Thash/s
Blocks/hour   5.89 / 611 s

164437/165496 - 1 =   (-0.639%)

all 3 numbers

-5.26% real time
+2.17% bitcoinwisdom
-0.639% bitcoincharts

are good numbers.

I will try to keep posting them this adjustment.

I really would love to see the -5% come true.

price is about 410 usd on coinbase.

While way hugely early, there isn't any indication of a huge increase coming this time around.

On a related topic: Where do folks get the BTC price since btcquote seems to be stuck at $413.36 for a week or so?

Value seems to be slow moving which is good and bad.   I want to see 450 again just as I would like a solid raise up.... but don't know how long that will be.

I still can't figure out difficulty trends:
Mar 18 2016    165,496,835,118    4.46%    1,184,672,491 GH/s
Mar 04 2016    158,427,203,767    -3.10%    1,134,066,098 GH/s
Feb 19 2016    163,491,654,909    13.44%    1,170,318,852 GH/s
Feb 07 2016    144,116,447,847    20.06%    1,031,625,717 GH/s

And looking to be another slow difficulty (hopefully).  I'm still wondering who the gear was on feb 7th, and feb 19th periods.   I don't think it was bitfury (unless they are really good about keeping quiet).   So leaves in my head bitmain, avalon, or possibly those b-11's.   Or a mix of those.  All still complete guesses though.

403446 (Main Chain)   2016-03-20 05:45:52

246 blocks in  44 hours    should be  264 blocks so we are real time

246/264 -1 = (-6.81%)

it is early  but the numbers are good.

next diff would be 154.2   would not this be something ;D

A long way to go here.

Well much to early in the period to know what is going on, but the first full Day was -5.56% 136 Blocks, and the Period Run rate so far, 7 Hours in Today is -5.4% but climbing. So here's hoping it will be another low one.

403488 (Main Chain)   2016-03-20 11:29:03

288 blocks should take 2 days or 48 hours

it has taken     49 hours and 40 minutes

we should have made  298 in 49 hours and 40 minutes

so 288/298  - 1 =  (-3.355 %)

picks will start in about 312 blocks or 2 days

we have made 367 blocks in the time we should have made 386

so 367/386-1 =   (-4.92%)   not bad so far  but 1630 blocks left. so we may do well.

So two negative Days and Yesterday the first small positive with +1.39% 146 Blocks. Run rate this period, 9 Hours in Day 3, is -4.6%, but it seems to take 600 - 900 Blocks for any sort of stable position to emerge, we are at the mercy of how much hash is added. But OK so far.....  :)

So are we still waiting for picks?

Picks start after the 600th block for the period, so

Adjust time:    After 1532 Blocks, About 10.8 days

When that reads 1416 blocks picks are open.

yes and you need more posts to join the contest.

On current numbers

we are at block 403684
we started at    403201

so this is 484 blocks

time has been

72 + 12 = 84 hours and 30 minutes

so 84 x 6 = 504 + 3 or 507 blocks for  a 0%

484/507 - 1 = (-4.53%)

not bad but a lot of time to go.

I like the current number -4.53% it it holds diff becomes  157.99  and would keep us safe until april 12 or 13.  Fingers crossed

I agree with fingers crossed, it has signs this could be a good change.  Seems either manufactures are slowing down on making compared to january, or altcoins are helping.  And could be a mix of both.

I would be very happy with a negative.  Also past 24 hours price is moving up just a little and currently over 411.  So not a huge jump but still looks nice to see.

Yes I have this feeling that if you were a big farm then you will have made your S7 / Avalon6 investment, perhaps you have turned off some older Miners and everyone is waiting for 14/16nm before making any more serious investments?

Yesterday back to being a negative day with -3.47% and 139 Blocks. A possible band is emerging with the run rate moving between -4% & -6%, so here's hoping that the net of these 3 Periods can be Zero, or even a little negative?

quite good numbers  a little price creep to 415 usd

the  (+0.25%)   above is off by 4 percent or so we are real time

403201 (Main Chain)   2016-03-18 09:50:30

567 blocks in  4 days and 2 hours

4 x 144 = 576 + 12 = 588

this would mean a diff of 159.6 about march 31

Looks like we leveled off a little over 415 to.  So was a nice little boost but looks like were done for a few day's I would guess.  We don't seem to get big upswings anymore very often.

I still am very happy with looks of difficulty, I think altcoins could be helping on this.   So I think it's temporary.   Also it's hard to say when but I still fear next big batch of miners.

The week still is not looking bad on difficulty.  And coin price is holding pretty well (coindesk http://www.coindesk.com/price/) :
Today's Open - $416.93
Today's High - $417.72
Today's Low - $416.35

So no big surges really lately on price.  But if we can keep difficulty changes in 5 or less with that I will be happy.  But I still will admit I cant for the life of me understand February's difficulty changes.

that 3 week period near the Chinese new year holiday had to be a 1 time 1 cent power contract and someone ran s-3's + s -5's while swapping in s-7's

a 3 week jumps can not be variance  so it had to be that.

http://e360.yale.edu/feature/chinas_great_dam_boom_an_assault_on_its_river_systems/2706/

maybe they load tested this dam

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Changheba_Dam

timing could be this.

the good thing is if true that hash may never come back on line.

which would mean at least 3 good jumps

this all translates to   Feb 19 - May 12 = flat  for 85-95 days

So Yesterday we ended up with +2.78% 148 Blocks for the Day. Earlier this Morning we pushed out of the -3% to -6% band we had been tracking and hit -2%, however a very long 95 Minute Block has left the Period Run Rate at -3.9%. So we are still in negative territory but anything can happen from here...

So the rate continues to pick up a bit, Yesterday was+3.47% and 149 Blocks. Today, 7 Hours in, is off to a frisky start with the Days run rate at +14% which has pushed the Period to date rate up to -1.3%. However all of this so far could just be variance with the period heading for Zero?

Will as ever leave my pick to the last minute, not that it seems to do much good...

What could be interesting is what will happen if they start selling lots of S7's at new coupon price.  We might see a temporary negative from machines being unplugged and shipped.  How much... like anything hard to speculate.

But I do see them selling a decent amount at new coupon S7 price.  Could be an interesting next month.

I don't think it will be enough to move the needle, the S7 has been on the market too long now for that to happen.  Plus everything they are selling is already running so it will have a net 0 effect on network hash power.

It is a nice sign not the 450 I keep hoping for.   But it is something positive which is good.  I wonder how much of it is due to people buying BTC to buy S7's personally.  I might be giving them to much credit, but the new coupon price was a little surprising to me.

my guess is the storm hits in the april 15 to april 30 jump

this jump ends say april 1  say +1%

next one after that ends april 15 say -1%

but april 15 to april 30     + 5% to + 10%

And there are new ~30PH pools popping up in China all the time, it's scary how fast they toss up farms over there.  I'm really hoping the halving makes big farms not cost efficient to run and we start seeing chunks of 30-40PH drop off the network instead of add to it.

A big thing is once we hit next gen to.  Once we hit it we likely will see a skyrocket on difficulty and likely they  will fill up internal farms of the lucky one that hit's it first before selling to public.

Bitmain is either pushing to make another batch or they are clearing shelves with new coupon price.  I personally hope it's just another batch as I would enjoy some extra time mining current gen before next gen.

Your right that the next month will be something intersting to watch for sure.

The good news to is the 424 price right now.  We seem to be holding in 420+ currently... which is nice if we can have a new spot instead of 400.   If that lasts we all really win.

I don't see a huge jump up on difficulty considering S7 current batch say's shipping in 5 working day's.  It makes me wonder if bitmain is shipping and clearing shelves or if they are making a batch and shipping as they make.  I think watching them over next week or two will be interesting.

While I forgot to make a guess this round, I probably wouldn't have guessed high enough. Looks to me like it's going to be north of 3%.

As for Bitmain and what it's shipping, I think that anybody that is expecting to receive a pristine newly manufactured device is deluding themselves. They are clearly selling "well tested" gear (i.e. used hardware with a full warranty). There may be some new production hardware mixed in, but the bulk of the latest batch will be used gear, just like it was with S5 in it's last batches. If you were to buy 10 of the latest batch, I'd be stunned if at least 6 weren't obviously used.

I have no idea what they are doing with any newly cleared shelf space.

Well looks like an upgrade on the part of bitmaintech.

So if they pull a s-7 at 4.7th off the shelf they are adding lets guess an 8th 1200 watt  s-9.  And off to the races we go.

And this is the big question.  Will they fill up space with more S7's and they got some quick ROI selling at new low price. Or will something more exciting happen like S7+ (unlikely) or next gen.

Bitmain has been very quiet on next gen.... but we have to believe they are working on it.  So just a lot unknown but I think next gen will hit us like a rocket on difficulty.

Sadly yes.... We are at Period to Date +1.76% and if the latest slope continues we will probably land around +2.5%

damn you VirosaGITS ;D ;D  (all in fun not for real)

yep   it is what we deal with  due to bitmaintech's ability to make tons of gear.  With no real completion at the moment.

Plus I suspect they can get short term  1 cent power contracts during certain times of the year.

Say a dam has a lot of rain in March and April  = Excess power and bitmaintech gets a good 3 week rate.

I feel they could have 100 to 200 ph sitting idol in old gear  and if they get a 1 cent contract they fire the stuff up.

An s-3 burning at .75 watts earns 17.00  usd
An s-4 burning at .70 watts earns  34.50 usd
An s-5 burning at .51 watts earns   40.30 usd

that would be in a month

they may simply have  far more s-7's not deployed

an s-7 makes pretty good money 185 a month at 1 cent power.

So we always face the fact the network may jump up from 1200 ph to 1300 ph in a day

I still wonder about old A1's to on 1 cent contracts.    There are a TON of lketc gear and other A1's in China that never were sold and were in data centers.  I'm starting to wonder if they pulled out and swapped gear without me noticing or if some still have them going on super cheap electric.

I know of a few data centers that were "cheap" but built to house A1's when then first came out.  But my info on what happened to them at this point.... is none.

Were down to 413 on price so have lost the mid 420's we started difficulty period with.  So kinda disappointing on that I keep hoping for new higher bottom.  I wonder if Bitmain cashed in a lot of that S7 btc money or anything.

Biggest thing is wondering what Bitmain's next move is.  They hit sales hard this week.... so wonder if one more S7 big batch that is mastered making cheap.  Or if we see next gen.... which next gen scares the crap out of me on difficulty.

So Yesterday was an ok +2.08% and 147 Blocks. However just when you think you know which way this beast is turning we have had an extremely slow start this Morning which has brought the Period to Date Run Rate, 10 Hours in,  down to +1.1%

So about 18 Hours to go, will be interesting to see if this slowdown continues?

hmmm  they pulled all the s-7's off the shelf that they sold with the coupons and shipped them?

I estimate they sold 400 s-7's so 400 x 4.7 = 18.8 ph  18.8/1300 = 1.44%    which is very close to the drop in hash rate.
The good thing with that is if true we will be near 0-1% for this jump.

we have made 1930 blocks

403201 (Main Chain)   2016-03-18 09:50:30

this has been 13 days and  5 hours 30 minutes

13 x 144 = 1872 blocks
5 x    6   =     30 blocks

So diffficulty wise we are not looking bad.  I am happy with a low difficulty change.  I still am surprised S7 sales did not have a bigger impact, but maybe next period.  But I'm happy difficulty wise.

Value wise not huge but we did start in mid 420's and are now around 416.  So lost some value but not a ton.  So hopefully we see a little rise, seems slow going on this.

Less then 2% is really nice IMO. Two more weeks with just a small diff increase. 2 months of "stability" wasn't expected on my side. Now that the S7 price went quite down, we might see some uptrend tho ... This is interesting ... Bitmain seems to want to give a huge pressure on Bitfury pricing, if and when they come out with some products or just ship some chips at all. This silence radio is disturbing me. I was quite sure we would see a massive flood of the new gen just around the start of April. I'm not going to complain, I like the current Diff movement.

If we could keep the same pace until the halving that would be epic. i'm just dreaming while i'm awake I guess :P

I only wish we keep same pace, I agree 2 and under til having.... would be beautiful for miners.  I think this S7 batch will do something. Either they are selling ton of racks for next gen, or selling a good amount of a new batch. Either way I see difficulty going up from bitmain.

And big thing is next gen it scares me.  I think if someone hit's  specs we  will see difficulty skyrocket as they pump out next gen chips.  I don't think we can avoid the next gen difficulty wave that is coming (i think at least someday).

The new Batch 16 of the S7 has one fan ... Not sure it's going to be a gold mine for them. I wanted to replace an S4 for a new S7 (used in fact) I will wait I think.

I think the coupon code will cause them more then normal sales, but I could be wrong.   But I think a lot of those will be batch 15.   I am not sure what to make of this new batch 16, I was kinda surprised they took off a fan.  But they did manage to make production price even lower... which I'm sure goal was.

The Batch 16 with only one fan looks really awkward - and of course the "warranty void" sticker is exactly where you would add the 2nd fan. For 7 bucks less, well I don't know what to say. Maybe they are running short on fans?

Batch 15 has arrived today and is already on the network "again". It looks new and smells like new, I can't complain yet. 2 boards are a bit wobbly (can't remember that before) and one board gets significant hotter than the other two...  it still meets my expectations.

Congratz to winner as always.   I feel like we all win when we get low numbers like this.   I'm starting to not be quire as scared of bitmain if change was just a new 1 fan model.... might not be the big changes I was thinking might happen.
