Title: What do you think is killing Bitcoin, if anything is?
Post by: Monnt on April 04, 2016, 11:33:32 AM

I think bitcoin is fine as it is, as long as we find a solution to this blocksize cap soon. Because something needs do be done about it.

It's also the arrogance and stubbornness of bitcoin miners, thinking only of themselves (although that is what you would expect from a decentralised system)

We need to find the perfect balance of democracy and decentralization.

IMO, sometimes medias do the most damage to BTCitcoin and it's image as a whole. As soon as a criminal uses it, they use the opportunity to make it a big news and as result damage it's reputation (that's why some think BTCitcoin is used for illegal activities only). On the other hand the differences of some of developers and miners could have a saying as well but it's just temporary setback and eventually there will be a flawless community behind it.

I think bitcoin is still growing a lot, but the biggest problem IMO is the block size debate. it makes transactions slow and fees high, which was one of the biggest advantages of bitcoin.

Lack of knowledge, lack of awareness and lack of trust from the people is killing bitcoin as they get carried away with the news that they listen related to bitcoins.

Pretty much what umaOuma said, also the fact that it is difficult to use in the real world for everyday purchases, although there are various apps out there we don't yet have one killer app that can be used to pay with bitcoin in stores.

Just recently I heard of Plutus which sounds promising, it allows you to pay at any NFC enabled merchant with bitcoin through their app, things like this will encourage more people into bitcoin and also some more positive media!

I think bitcoin is fine as it is, as long as we find a solution to this blocksize cap soon.
There is no solution as far as the block size limit is concerned. Raising the block size X amount of times does nothing but postpone the 'problems' (as some claim).

Because something needs do be done about it.
Something is being done: Segwit, Lightning Network.

It's also the arrogance and stubbornness of bitcoin miners, thinking only of themselves (although that is what you would expect from a decentralised system)
What makes you say that?

We need to find the perfect balance of democracy and decentralization.
This is probably impossible due to how humans are.

The nly thing that can potentially kill bitcoin is regulation and governments. If Governments start a persecution against bitcoiners it could harm the ecosystem up to the point of killing it!

I think time is killing bitcoin... as we are approaching the next phase of bitcoin growth, if we are unable to solve the blocksize issues, bitcoin will died slowly. However, if we work together and overcome the obstacles, time is going to be with us....

goverments can't make bitcoin stop existing. even if they ban bitcoin usage in the entire would, then it still isn't possible. to entirely kill bitcoin you need to close the internet or all the power in the world. otherwise nothing can stop bitcoin.

Nothing is killing it, rest assured, what doesn't kill you makes you stronger, even governments hostile to Bitcoin can be by passed by Tails Linux Live OS which has electrum pre installed you just need to restore your wallet there. So nothing can kill it as long as its digital.

It's not the lack of it exactly, rather the resistance and ignorance of people. I know people who just don't want to use it but they know exactly what bitcoin is.

If anything is doing damage to bitcoin it's Classic & their supporters. The price would be higher if they'd never come along & whatever other forms of no sense Hearn & Gavin have tried previously.

People don't like investing into things that they can see are experiencing issues.

I think it will fix soon after halving and bitcoin will still alive and if the blocksize is the problem why they don't increase the speed of their transaction via the internet speed per mb.. i think maybe the problem is the speed o the internet thats why the transaction is very slow.. but i know its a miners decision if they confirm it fast..

Yes.

I expected someone to bring up the 'ragequit'. It was damaging, but Bitcoin grew past it.

It is obvious that you don't understand how Bitcoin works exactly as this does not make sense. Transactions are near instant; confirmations are what take time (usually 1 per 10 minutes).

but i know its a miners decision if they confirm it fast..
If the person behind the TX doesn't add adequate fees then the pools might ignore their TX for X amount of time. This should be expected.

It's more about "what is keeping btc from giving its full potential"!
Humans.

I could answer it in a bit more specific way but I don't think that it would help you. I could either list up examples of specific human traits that are bad, or the type of people that are working on suppressing Bitcoin (e.g. whoever is behind that bot in the speculation section). It can't get any more specific than that.

price is not gonna kill bitcoin, however price is unstable
It changes. The last 30 days were pretty stable. However, I do agree that the price won't kill Bitcoin.

The price could kill the bitcoin, but I highly doubt about that also because its not stable but also not going far down every time so that says enough.
What is gonna kill the bitcoin at the end of the journey is the banks in my opinion because they are also gonna make a similar system like it and have power over it.

IMO what is killing Bitcoin is ignorance. No, ignorance is not a bliss, ignorance is a curse which kills many good things in this world including Bitcoin. Let people know more about what Bitcoin is and maybe then they will accept it for their own good.

The indecisive nature of major issues that create polarized views and mislead people attempting to get a understanding of bitcoin. The constant manipulation so people can alter the markets and lastly the payments not being instant and needing to wait for confirmations. Its appealing but limited to the computer world due to the slow rate of transaction time.

the thing that is killing bitcoin the most is the fact that there are some people with a lot of bitcoins thus they can impact the price significantly with the currency they have and it is kinda getting more and more centralized

also there are other cryptocurrencies that not allow bitcoin to be the only currency that would have no rivals, though i hope it will remain the most popular cryptocurrency that will exist forever

nope, nothing has the power to kill bitcoin. The only thing that kills bitcoin is the fluctuations in its price. As the price is unstable, it can make the bitcoin value to be down.

For ideological reasons Bitcoin will resist the changes necessary to integrate with the existing financial system. This is a problem for the growth of the community. Today I read an article about Bitcoin fueling growth in the online poker world. An hour later I read an article about R3 partnering with Microsoft so that they can work with Ethereum and Ripple.

Reality > Ideology.

Well, technically there is always a small chance of a possible scam. However, experienced users should usually not have a problem with this (only in rare cases; e.g. someone very trustworthy ends up scamming). I wouldn't say that scams are a big problem for Bitcoin.

agree with that,i'm also thought that the only way to kill bitcoin is killed by developer, investor and user of bitcoin, they can do anything to bitcoin, even control the price. imagine if they have a plan to dump bitcoin until the price lower than etherum, maybe people will more likely adopt Etherum.

Skimmed the whole thread...
It's as if people here do not realize that 90% of Western economy is regulated, tax paying corporations, LLCs, etc.
No serious business is going to convert to a Gen 1.0, shady, anon developed cryptocurrency controlled by Chinese miners.

Gen 2.0 platforms like NXT, etc failed for the same reason.

But built-from-scratch Gen 3.0 networks like ETH are, in fact, being adopted by a plethora of major companies.

Bitcoin's problem is the whole "lipstick on a pig" syndrome...
Bolting complex shit onto a Gen 1.0 coin is a waste of time.

And "network effect" applies to Devs (not mythical consumers/hipsters)...
In mid-2016 there are probably more elite Devs working on Alts or Gen 3.0 than BTC.

Price fluctuations is killing bitcoin as price is the most important factor when it comes to bitcoin and if price falls then I think people hesitate in investing their money into it.

This fluctuation is a very bad thing. But in the end it is the community killing it self. So many scams, so many newcomers gone.
In the beginning i thought it was a bank cartel trying to hurt bitcoin, but these days it seems to me it is the community.

fluctuations occur because the user is still very small so the price movement can be set or manipulation. I agree with you maybe for now the biggest risk that fluctuations

Volatility makes Bitcoin very interesting for investors and others as it allows them to make profit whilst trading and it will also help bring in fresh money. What is bad for one person, is a good thing for the other.

Always bitcoin being "killed" by someone. But how? You never see a plausible method.  ::)
there's only 1 way to kill bitcoin

outperform it and steal all the users.

when altcoin is better than bitcoin, bitcoin will be killed by the other altcoins which has great features and faster than bitcoin, we can see so many altcoin out there trying to compete with bitcoin, but i trully believe that only small of them will be survive

What's killing bitcoin?

Give me a good reason why I should go out of my way to buy bitcoin to use as a currency.  I have yet to hear a good answer to that one.  I do like it as a store of value and to gamble with, but it absolutely sucks as a currency (except on dark markets, I've heard).  But everything I want to buy I can more conveniently and more safely buy using fiat.

A pertinent question is what equals life and what equals death?

Is death continuing as a niche that serves enthusiasts and dark market type stuff and it staying that way forever? It could well do. I wouldn't call that death but it is missing out on a planet load of potential.

I think the fluctuation has advantages and disadvantages and certainly no one who likes fluctuations as investors and traders. but if you ask ordinary people like me. of course i will prefer to stable price

Apart for the technical nitty-gritties, I can say, the presence of around 650 altcoins is definitely killing the bitcoin. Even though the bitcoin is having the highest market cap, but the total investment, which should have been flowed in to the bitcoin market, is getting divided in to 600 odd altcoins.

This way the total market cap is decreasing and the price increasing is not happening as envisaged.

I believe the long term issue going on with the bitcoin core and classic is one of the major factor which is killing in terms of growth.

There is no issue with the bitcoins that can never be solved. Small issues are with everything and they tend to get solved. So if u think bitcoin core and classic is one of the major factor which is killing in terms of growth, you are probably wrong.

money laundering is the obvious thing that gonna kill bitcoin,

If bitcoin have been used for money laudering much more, maybe some country will do something

do you mean more countries and politicians will start using bitcoin more, once they realize they can use it to launder money or hide money

panama papers may be good news for BTC

What is killing bitcoin?
That is internet extinction.

If internet can't be used anymore, then bitcoin would become history.

All i can say if all holders do massive selling will affect the price and it will gonna die if investors are in panic selling And if the wallet provider is being hack or bankrupt it may also 1 factors that bitcoin might dead.
if price goes low
the bulls show their support
if price goes high the bears show resistence

that is how trading works, BTC is where it is now due to demand vs supply

and according to VPRO some miners are/were running at a loss (oct 2015) when btc was below $300
which would indicate the price to be undervalued at that time.

Right now that seems to have adjusted and BTC is trading where it should be.
even if big whales dump a shitload, there will always be other whales looking to pounce on that oppurtunity and buy a shitload at low prices,
as would probably many non traders, the low price would attract attention and create demand driving price back up (fast slow whatever)

as for companies going bankrupt, they go bankrupt do to fiat, and more importantly most likely due to the interest fees they must pay to their fiat creditor.

hacking, is just poor business model, by any company that wants to work with BTC but thinks security of its servers is not priority.
this gives more claim as to why we need P2P, as third parties cannot be trusted when they put (fiat) profits before prople.

Truth. No internet, no bitcoin. That is the fact that bitcoin is an online currency. Thread about bitcoin changing fiat will be impossible. It is entirely different than physical money.

Well if that thing would happen then it will really kill bitcoin but i think what would really kill bitcoin is that is the blocksize wont be upgraded to 2mb we will see a slow confirmation it the coming months.

i don't think anything is killing bitcoin, because it looks strong to me and growing each day.

but i think there are a lot of things that are keeping bitcoin back from its real potential and becomming huge. things like the FUD that is being spread by the media, and a lot of stupid traders who are looking for a temporary dip or the altcoin pumpers like the ethereum supporters.

There are factors that my kill bitcoin like if many user will sell all their bitcoin and dont use it anymore and n o user for bitcoin i think thay is the worst scenario for bitcoin and it will be dead but for now its impossible price keeps rising everyday and many people buy more bitcoins now because they speculating the price increase when halving is come the price of bitcoin will be more high.

Traders are like that - looking to make money of temporary movements. It is good if they can profit while bitcoin's price is moving up as well as down. You need different kinds of people to make up the bitcoin ecosystem.
