Title: If you had to choose a better name for Bitcoin, what would it be?
Post by: Laniakea on May 16, 2016, 12:21:08 AM
Say the Bitcoin community would ask you for a new name;  a new name must be chosen for Bitcoin.

What would be your proposal?

It's already a perfect name but if I will have my way will name that coin to Digicoin but we have already a coin with that name but people can relate that it is a digitalcoin...

But I will oppose if they want to give bitcoin a new name it's like stating all over again..

Unicoin would be a nice name. It could mean a unique coin, a universal coin, plus it sounds like a mythical creature. It's all good for me. This could make BTC prices surge even higher, what with its wicked-sounding name.

The protocol should have been named: The Blockchain Protocol

The currency should/could have been named: Blockcoin

The distinction between the protocol/technology and the currency would have made things easier to understand, imho.

If i had to choose a better name for bitcoin it would be " Digi Money" so that if other heard about it theres a clue in their mind that this new name is money online. And the new abbreviation DIGI MONEY = DG haha cool. And the new name of satoshi is Digi Coin and the new name of bits is Digs.

for commercials.

I think Bitcoin is perfect for what it stands for but otherwise bitgold would be nice as well, because it is finite and there are so many bitcoins in limited supply, which makes it rate, like gold.  :)

I would go for something that would represent both the internet side of things and also what it is used for. A name like iMoney < Internet Money > or even Dcash < Digital Cash > The coin in the name Bitcoin is confusing, and people associate it with fiat coins and think it has to be physical coins.

If I had the chance to choose a new name for Bitcoin I would probably name it VirtuBank for a virtual bank where you are the sole owner and in control of your account balance and no one can scrutinize what you do with your money. But I don't think people would like the word bank in the name as it symbolizes centralization. I also like VirtuCash or VirtuMoney or VirtuPay. VirtuPay sounds very nice though.

well... seeing as there is no actual physical "coin" .. here is what id suggest as alternative names that would be more mainstream (like 'cloud' is used instead of 'remote hosting')

eDesa = electronic decentralized pesa (like the epesa, the african community common currency.. but decentralised)

oledge = open ledger

ellipts = elliptic curve based currency

ursat = your satoshi's

other things that need to be changed is the "wallet file" should be called something like a "key ring" seeing as it is more like a place to store keys instead of actual funds..

so lets see if anyone else can be more creative and try thinking of names that dont use the words wallet or coin.. because those terms are actually more confusing when you look at the reality of how bitcoin works

Yeah, but, the public really likes the word "coin". It conjures up old fashioned gold coins that hold their worth. If you want to give people the impression that this is something that holds it's value, "coin" has to be in the name. "Ledgers" and "electronic" don't conjure up the idea of stores of value.

what public?
show me some statistics of opinion polls from the general public.

coins do not have an inherent mindset of holding value. most people think of coins as that crappy metal stuff left at the bottom of your pocket that a shop gives you back to pretend he hasnt ripped you off by a whole bank note amount.

coins remind people that even if you have a coin you cannot buy very much or anything with a coin. unless you have alot of them. and even then you sometimes need to put them into a machine to have it converted into credit because most stores dont trust their staff to count coins.

Agreed. bitcoin is the best name of our lovely crypto currency. I am very thankful to satoshi nakomoto to giving us a great digital currency. What would be your proposal?
I think I would name it Wincoin because only winners would use it. But I think that the name would not matter much at all the only thing that has to be in the name is coin the rest yours to choose.

That's true bitcoin is the best name for itself, but if I have to rename it then I would prefer to name it as wondercoin as its really best and wonderful currency.

Bitcoin is already a suitable name. But if asked to change the name, there are a few names: Bitcent, Bitdollar, Bitmoney, Bitcash, or B-cash :D

haha, I never thought someone would ask such question.

well, probably I will choose "ditcoin" for "digital coin"  ;D
it sounds mainstream, but that's the only name I got.

what do you say?

'ditcoin' sounds really ridiculous in my language. can't help laughing with that name.
from 'digital' to 'dit' seem not quite legit. call it 'digicoin' instead.

Bitcoin is already a good name and suits it well, I can't think anything else now.

Maybe if you've asked me this question at the time of bitcoin's rise, maybe I'd have some thoughts :P

I don't think that there can be any better name for bitcoin, I think its the best name it can have and now we are so used to this word so we cannot expect any other word for it.

No better name than Bitcoin in my opinion. Bytecoin was a close  second, but bitcoin just sounds so much better. Bit standing for digital 1s and 0s it fits so well.

Very nice question, I was surprised when I saw this topic. I didn't think about it before at all, and now I'm reading comments and I'm smiling what ideas people have.

Bitcoin really sounds the best. People who made it they really hit it, no matter how will try I don't believe we can think of something better. But at least we can have some fun.

Digicoin is ok, but its more suitable for some alt coin. Bytecoin sounds a bit funny to me.
Well after some time of thinking only good name that I can offer is a bit combination from some suggestions here and its digcash, or maybe digicash.

It took 5 years to promote Bitcoin and become mainstream by changing it's name we will need more years for people to know that they already change the name..So I will not propose a name could be you are just fishing for a new name for your new altcoin..

Bytecoin already exists though. I've been mining quite a few amounts of this infamous altcoin for a few days now.
Check out https://bytecoin.org/ and you'll see that's already been in circulation for nearly 3/4 years now.

Bitcoin; it just rolls out of the tongue. It would be cool though if it’s used a simple names such as “rin” That’s the name of the currency from a new game that I’m developing soon. But bitcoin is still a good name.

I saw a speech of Andreas Antonopoulos that said that he found Bitcoin to sound too nerdy, because Bit makes you think of geeky stuff, and then coin, which is wrong since Bitcoin actually uses no coins but keys, so he proposed Trustnet or something like that. I think he is terribly wrong, Bitcoin is a way cooler sounding name, actually no one but nerds care that you aren't using coins but keys.

I think there is none because from the root word bit and coin. bitcoin uses bits to demonstrate satoshi's and it is a coin so bitcoin is the best name that was given. on every bytes of computer genarate's algorithms to mine bitcoin. It is coherent for the name bitcoin  ;D ;D ;D

If it had a saying it would go like: Bits and Bytes; ur number one currency food right in your personal computer. Though I think it should be a simple one word name.

But if I was the inventor of bitcoin I would gave the name VCoin to it, which is derived from Virtual Coin.

Then don't worry your name is taken, there will be someone who will create another crypto currency and will choose that name for that currency, as nowadays the currencies are more than the names available for them, so one attractive name is your one.

Even if I had to I would most likely refuse to pick a new name for Bitcoin because I couldn't find anything that fits better. If you were to force me to, I would just call it Bits. But that's not really what I want obviously.

I refuse to pick a new name for bitcoin even tge developers gave me chance.Bitcoin name has been a mark for peoples using it,and i think there is no enough reason of changing it's name to something.Bitcoin as it name nkw must remain to what is it no need to change.
