Title: How safe is to storage private keys in the cloud?
Post by: USBitcoinServices.Com on May 21, 2016, 12:57:41 AM
Can someone know where a private key belongs once a person have found it?

Let's say a private key copy is stored in the cloud and is found for a bad person; is it possible for that person to know where to use that private key?

yeah, man. all they need to do is copy the key and import it to their wallet and they'll be able to spend your bitcoins.
storing your private keys online is never safe.

This could just as easily happen to a cloud account.

Get either a hardware wallet (ledger if your cheap, trezor if you want something a bit more durable) and keep a backup of the paper seed separate OFF of the computer, or a coinbase multisig vault account with a strong passphrase and keep the print out of the backup/recovery keys (can be used to recover if coinbase goes bust with your passphrase) or if you forget your passphrase and coinbase is still alive, used to recover the vault from a forgotten passphrase.

Just do not keep private keys in the cloud.

I would suggest bring your private keys offline. It is scary to store them in the cloud.

If you really want to store in the cloud, look for a credible cloud service. Back it up and keep it safe from prying eyes.

How about to storage it at  https://clipperz.is/ ? it is an encrypted platform..  or  in a decentralized platform like storj or any other similar? or at a decentralized exchange like CCEDK.com,  openledger.info

I personally highly, highly recommend against storing your private keys in any sort of cloud database, as any breach of the database, unless it is encrypted and the encryption keys aren't compromised as well, would result in your private keys being available to the hacker (or anyone with access to the data from that point) and it could be a race against time to move your Bitcoin before the hacker finds your key and takes the Bitcoin, assuming he doesn't go for it right away.

It is called private keys for a reason. They should only be known to you and held in strong storage accessible only by you. Never trust cloud storage.

I suggest you never store your private key in the cloud, in other words do not store the private key online. Because it was too risky, blockchains a big company can be hacked. What about us? having only protection is not as good as blockchains course.
So it's safe to keep your private key offline, as written in the paper maybe...
thank you

I think it's best to keep private keys offline and possibly on paper only.  If you keep it on a computer, you should encrypt it and make sure it is extremely secure.

Never. Two choices are:

1) Old school. Use Electrum or Armory for cold storage using two computers, one online for watching only half of the wallet, the other strictly offline for the wallet and private keys. Use a USB drive to transfer transactions. Still popular with some.
2) Bitcoin hardware wallet. Trezor is the most trusted having a two year track record. Also most versatile.

id say its really safe to store your keys in the cloud if you put them in text file and encrypt them in a rar file with a good password.

even brute force it would take 100s of years to crack a good rar password.

I agree that a well encrypted file is pretty damned secure, but even better to not have the file available to those that don't need to see it.  Better to keep your keys as private as possible.

Yes, that could work with proper creativity.

Or you could just add "1" to the second number in your key, or subtract two letters...  Just remember exactly what you did.

In general it would be better to go with a Ledger or Trezor.  I like them both.

why do you want to make it harder than it is, learn how to encrypt the private keys and you can also put it in a txt file and then put that txt also in a .rar file which is password protected (this way would be double secure) then upload it.

There are many type of private key not just bitcoin and other altcoin some encrypted data also uses private key. if the bad person somehow obtain the private key and he knows about bitcoin that will be his first step and try the other if it does not work.

I concur, and this man deserves a cookie.

I had not considered bad actors as custodians of the data. It truly is best to keep this data as far away from a connected device as you possibly can.

To be honest, it's not that "private" to store private keys in the cloud. Especially if you're planning on using the address as a cold storage one, or you're planning on depositing a lot of bitcoins into that addresses.

If there is a major hack into that cloud provider, there is every chance that you will be effected too. To lower the chances, you might be able to try BIP38 encryption. Makes it a bit harder for the hacker to decode.

Once the bad person finds your private key, he can spend it. There is no such thing as knowing where to spend it. He can spend it anywhere he wants.

It's best to store your private key in a paper wallet.

how if i said nothing is 100% safe if you store your data on cloud, essepsially if you store your data on google drive, its have security weakness, just like Edward Snowden said, cloud is really sensitive place for hacker to hack something from there.

You should not store your private key as plain text, but encrypt it, the best way to be safer. It depends on the bad person who finds it, if he knows about cryptocurrency then he will use it, otherwise people will ignore it as they don't know what is it.

It's not safe to store your private keys on the cloud because anyone who finds the file can simply import it in to their wallet and empty out everything you own from your wallet into theirs. If you need to store your private keys on the cloud though at least try to disguise the file as something mundane like photo-shopping the keys onto a picture and hiding that picture in a big folder of photos from your last vacation or something. Sometimes thieves won't be checking folders with boring names like that and it's best to hide your most sensitive information in plain sight  ;)

They dont need to know where to use it, all they have to do is enter the private key in their wallet and they have the funds by importprivkey.

If someone hacks into your cloud storage account and is knowledgeable about Bitcoin they can notice your back-up of private keys on there and all they have to do is import the keys in their own wallet to gain access to your Bitcoins. But in general I think if you maintain proper security of your cloud storage account like using a very strong password and email address that is very hard to compromise whatever you are storing on there would be safe. I have stored login information for different websites on my cloud storage before and I have had no issues but of course anything could happen so be careful.

Yeah, google drive is very helpful and it gives convenience to secure a very confidential data and to avoid an unwanted thing (Compromised).

Private key is supposed to be private, and cloud is not a safe thing. I'm not telling about it can be steal by the cloud service itself or someone, I'm telling about how secure is the cloud. If it just a normal cloud service that doesn't have a proper security system, than you shouldn't use it.
By the way if you think that if you save the private key with Google Drive and if you think that Google itself are able to see your private key, that's wrong. Because Google itself can't go into your files in the cloud, you are the one who can do that because you know the password.

Private key is not stored on cloud i mean not in the decentralized bitcoin ledger, it will only be stored if you generate address in online wallets like coinbase, blockchain.info etc so you are the only one who know private key if you generate bitcoin address in offline wallet or from online paper wallet service. And where you keep that private key determine how secure your bitcoins are.

I just use two good online wallet with nice password and always check if my pc is clean.
I'm pretty sure blockchain/xapo have way more security then my computer will ever have.

The only way someone would get my bitcoins would be with my password so i just have to keep track on that... not a file, not a hard disk that may fail or anything like that.

How safe is to storage private keys in the cloud?
It can be very safe, or very unsafe. It all depends how your store your data there.

Unencrypted, plain data: UNSAFE.

Automatic, you use a "cloud app" that automatically "syncs" your data: UNSAFE.

Encrypted, by the user prior to upload to the cloud: SAFE. I think I should not highlight the importance of a strong, random password. But alerting is never too much: Use a STRONG and RANDOM password.

It can be very safe, you just need to know how to use it. And always use reliable services that are guaranteed to stay online, or upload to multiple servers.

The general rule is, never trust you backup and/or storage in just one place. Redundancy is very important.

EDIT:
I keep all my wallets stored on "Google Drive", so I can restore it in case my local backup is lost: https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B1NkCCdVgH7JNUJJalh2MVJwZEU/view?usp=sharing

yeah, man. all they need to do is copy the key and import it to their wallet and they'll be able to spend your bitcoins.
storing your private keys online is never safe.

If you encrypt the file that contains the sensible data, either be it a .txt file with a seed phrase or a wallet.dat file (which should have it's own encryption anyway) compressed in a .rar or .7z file or whatever format you prefer, then to make it even harder to find, change the extension of the file to something else... it's pretty much impossible that someone will first find the file and realize there are bitcoins inside, then bruteforce the password of the file (any strong pass will be impossible to bruteforce, winrar or 7z use SHA256 for passes which is same as bitcoin hashing algo).

Another factor can compromise is the communication between cloud and your local device, if someone evdropping the inter traffic, he may figure it out.
For example, someone hack into your router and tcp dump all your traffic ...
Even you are SSHed, still not as sevureas private address.

Not at all safe because it goes to 3rd party  and you have no idea what they could do with your uploaded data. But could trust Google and Microsoft because they have huge data and files and they won't search your private keys.

Ofcourse he would know, unless he never heard of bitcoin and does not know if what is stored there is a private key which can let him have bitcoins from a wallet, so if you have mentioned in there that it is a private key then your bitcoins are gone for sure.

Nothing that is available to the third party isn't very much secure. I wouldn't be so brave and store the private key in the cloud. How could you know that your coins are secured and not exposed to the risk to be stolen or hacked? Save it somwhere offline.

Indeed, not a good idea to store your private key in cloud storage. It is not safe and theres a possibility that it will be hack. But if you happen to store there I think you have to device a strategy. Example you can  divide in different file the keys that you only knows it. you can have also password protect the file etc. But still it is not advisable in my opinion to store online. :)

Many believe it is convenient to store private key or paper wallet in cloud like google drive however there will be always a risk of getting your private key exposed/lost if those cloud services got their hard disk crash as well as your cloud platform account got hacked.

Better to print out paper wallet, laminate it with plastic, put one copy in bank locker with insurance and put one copy under glass jar, bury it on your backyard.  ;)

If you are not comfortable with uploading sensitive data to the cloud you could try setting up a home server. I would buy one of the little cheap server boxes and get 2 SSD's or HDD's and do a RAID 1 configuration that would allow for increased reliability in case of a disk failure. This little server box would be kept offline. And voila you have a super durable long-term storage for your private keys  ;D

like i said earlier in this post i dont see an issue uploading your keys to a cloud if you encrypt them..

truecrypt, even tho its an abandoned project it allows you to encrypt a file and use that as a container..
you can name it anything you want, so weddingpic.jpg could have your encrypted keys in it.. seriously nobody would know..

just dont lose the password.

A cloud is ok for some things that you want easy access to wherever you see but you should never use ot for personal things esspcislly financial assets like bitcoin. I mean would you risk half your life savings to an online cloud ? Rather not take the risk. The best protection is prevention. Rather print them out and put them into a physical safe.
It is much more secure this way and you are in control fpr the security so noone is to blame but you but that is a good thing rather then having to blame the cloud service.

actually saving the private keys and other personal things on a cloud service is a good idea because hardware failure and risk of loss is always there which any computer that you are using or even if you store them on pieces of paper.

however you should never store them on cloud un-encrypted. instead there are so many different methods of encryption data (for private keys or any other personal document you want to store there) and then you can upload them. that way you always have access to them and nobody else can know what they are even if they hack your cloud account.

It is extremely dangerous to store private keys or in general, any sensitive information on the cloud. Cloud storage can be compromised very easily and anyone can access them with your password. Once they have your private key, encrypted or not, it have a chance of getting cracked. The encryption method may have vulnerabilities discovered over time or dictionary attack can be ran against them.

A paper backup at different geographical locations would work better.

Just make an ring with your private key, make a tattoo under your feet, just don't trust on internet.
maybe to simplify when they're in needs of the private key immediately so they could just simply open up their cloud account and then take the private key. though cloud storage is not so secure. for an example when some celebrities' photos were taken from iCloud (yeah it's iCloud and was made by Apple). even cloud storage which was provided by a professional company like Apple and quite expensive also have a hole on it

Everything online stored in a cloud will always be dangerous and can be hack by the pros. there is nothing secret when google indexed it.

Why would someone on their sane minds put their money and priv keys in a cloud? Everyone knows that everything online could easily be compromised if the user is not precautious on what he is doing. Also, if in a need of getting the funds fast then why in a cloud? Why not in your mobile device where you are in full control of your money eh?

If they are zip/encrypted offline,  placed in an encrypted veracrypt container (offline) and stored in a zero knowledge cloud risk is very negligible.  I just like to have options.

That will work. Just don't lose or forget your decryption keys. I store some BTC in an encrypted wallet within an encrypted zip file attached to a gmail draft message  ;D. It is ready to use anytime from anywhere in the world (except maybe in China and a few other countries where gmail doesn't work).

I would not recommend storing your private keys into cloud as it has significant chances of getting hacked. If possible store it offline. Write down the private key in a notebook stored in a safer place in your house.

Private keys are not required to use very frequently. If you are holding a very small amount of Bitcoin then storing into cloud is ok but if you are Holding a significant amount of Bitcoin then take precautions and act accordingly.

Thats a very dangerous idea. Storing your private keys at any cloud storage service is not recommended. If someone get into your cloud storage. Thats it, goodbye to your bitcoins. You can store your bitcoin in a cold storage which is way more safer than storing it at cloud storage. Cloud storage doesnt guarantee you security. Thats is not meant for storing private keys.

Someone that will hack you will be someone that is probably aware of Bitcoin. I wouldn't also trust the societies that provide you such services. They're well-known to attack the privacy of their customers.

It is not safe in my opinion if you upload it into cloud unless if you are just upload privately.. but it is better to make it rar your private keys should be in rar and put an password before you can upload it in any cloud server.. if you just upload without password or privately if someone found it they can ask to someone if what is that and import it into wallet and get you bitcoin like other said.. so always use rar archival and put password.

Its not really safe to store private keys on online even on those cloud storage, the chance of being hacked is high if someone is aware about bitcoin and do hacked your cloud storage then say goodbye to your bitcoin because they could easily import it and transfer all bitcoin into another wallet.Thats why its better to store private keys on a safe place like hardware or offline wallets.

Anything you store online has its own risk .So if you are planning to to store anything online make sure you understand the risk involved in it.Even banks are getting hacked now a days and so you can imagine how the security measures will be for a cloud hosting service.

Can someone know where a private key belongs once a person have found it?

Let's say a private key copy is stored in the cloud and is found for a bad person; is it possible for that person to know where to use that private key?

Just rename the file something like family_pics_2009.zip and it will be totally safe.  :D

lol. it makes sense anyway. the name is unpredictable  ;D

well, private key is an access to someone wallet. so if a hacker knows your private key, it is very possible to him to take control of your wallet. that's why saving your private key in a cloud is not recommended, unless you are cleaver enough to name the file.

I think the chances of getting it stolen by thieves in your home are way lower than having it somewhere online. Write these private keys, laminate them and hide them somewhere. If you want you can even type them from the right to the left so if anyone tries it, it doesn't work (like flipping it horizontally).. Hackers can get online and hack just anywhere in the world, while the chances of getting a home theft are pretty low.

Nope, Place it into a lot of the place, sometimes securing it in your cell phone will so risky. Anytime you can lose it and if you don't have any backup and then you will lose your money.

But every  person want to steal bitcoin was knowing about that, the private key, they understand about that.

2. paper wallet
3.
4.
5.
6. cloud - as in not safe at all.

Ever had a house fire? Or a burglar? Or just lost an important piece of paper (or had a spouse toss it or a toddler turn it into paper-mache)? I sincerely hope this is not what anyone is doing.

I'd definitely say no to that. Online is no way secure, its like you're letting someone hold on to your data, its upto them and millions of others if they let it stored or not.
So if it is something worth keeping safe, offline is the best option.

Dubious at best, highly unadvisable imo. There isn't really any point to doing any of that when you consider the security risks, however even if your key is compromised you might get lucky and the hacker won't recognize it as a wallet private key.

I wouldn't do it, you shouldn't do it, and it is far better to opt for a ton of hand-made copies or similar copies as opposed to holding it in the cloud.

It is unsafe. That's why I had stopped using my blockchain.info account and migrated to mobile wallets where only I have control of my keys. I am also generating some vanity address on my PC (online but browsing only trusted sites like bitcointalk) and store the keys only in my PC's hard disk.

P.S. I have lost a litecoin on a scam wallet site. You have been warned.

Noooo. Dont ever, EVER store any private key in the cloud. If you really have to use Pcloud not Dropbox. Dropbox could be working with the NSA in snooping on its users' files.

first of all there is always options for multiple encryptions that even NSA can not break, you should look into them before doing it. you don't just put it up there un-encrypted! anybody can steal that.

second of all so what! even if NSA checks your cloud which there is no reason for it, and then another if, if they break the encryption, are you doing something illegal? are the bitcoins gained from an illegal channel or did you evade paying taxes? if not you shouldn't be worried.

This is not a good option for your funds. There other solutions where only you and someone you can trust have access on it. If these private keys correspond to your savings you can encrypt your private keys and store it in a safe in your home or to a bank locker. If the keys correspond to small amount, how small it depends from you, many members of the above have proposed some very good solutions.

I don't trust such things as clouds. I think as it's possible to steal private information by using public Wi-Fi as it's possible to steal private information using cloud. In the area of new high technologies people have to be careful.

Multiple encryptions would really do to make your files safe even you put it on cloud storage but we all know that not all people is aware to do such action and just carelessly put up any important informations without encrypting thats why its risky and as you said NASA will just check your account or cloud if you do something illegal though.

you can always take extra security measures like double encrypting the file, and do a password protection kind of thing on top of that, and including it among other irrelevant files which has no indication of bitcoin in them.
Decrypting an encrypted file will really be hard even how good hacker or expert you are.You are right it would really took million years before you could able to decrypt it specially if you make double encryption. No one would could able to touch your keys no matter what.

Can someone know where a private key belongs once a person have found it?

Let's say a private key copy is stored in the cloud and is found for a bad person; is it possible for that person to know where to use that private key?

A private key is the most important part of the wallet because it signifies that you are the owner of a particular

wallet. Now What if someone has your pprivate key, The answer is simple that person can easily access your wallet

by importing it and empty it in one go. Making an online wallet is considered very risky but keeping your keys in a

cloud is one hundred times worse. It is the best for your wallet and every important parts of it to be offline as

much as possible.

How about that someone decides to split their pvt key and store half of it in one cloud and the other half in another cloud?

Yes that will be easy for them when they get your private key, they can easily import and acces your wallet through their device without needing any verification which is bad in the side of private wallet keys. And they can freely spend your bitcoins everywhere

Or even in  three parts.

Sounds like a good idea, but actually it could complicate things for  key's owner .

I am not fully believe to store private keys in cloud storage, all our secrets will open if the emails we've been penetrated by hackers,
I consider the cloud is not a safe way because it still has a gap to be consumed together.

Speaking of privacy what email service would you use: Gmail (non encrypted) or protonmail (encrypted)

No, just no. Whenever you hear "online" you should know it's not safe to store critical data.

If the owner of the cloud storage wants to f*** you up, they can do that without any problem. What's even worse? They can use your BTC addresses without you even finding out about it.

I'd rather find a safer, offline way I can store my private keys and not let these guys possibly use them without my knowledge and agreement.

Don't do it if you can.

If you definitely have to do it then make sure that you are using a trusted service such as google docs or dropbox that also encrypts your document in the cloud. Don't use any of the small services.

Don't store any more than 0.1 BTC in the wallet either.

Just use an online wallet like blockchain.info. You are probably safer that way than to store your private keys in a cloud storage service.

There are cloud storage availability with several services. Even with browsers limited free cloud space is provided. Cloud storage were secure, but it has the chances of getting hacked easier than a offline storage. Cloud give the access anywhere option which is not available with the offline storage. We need to take it along with us wherever we move.

if you dont want to loose your bitcoins, then dont share your private keys, its as simple as that.

take your private keys offline. period.

Few know the probability of losing will be less

I think it is not safe to save your private keys in the cloud or online because it is too risky because there is no safe place in the internet and everything can be bypassed by the professional hackers. So if i were you i will just save the private keys in a offline device like usb and keep it on a safe place and i will also do a back up by having a copy on paper.

I don’t prefer and trust the private keys to be stored in to the cloud. I think it is like the involvement of something which is more at risk anytime. We are surrounded by many hackers and this is something that makes quite uncomfortable to think of it. I am more interested in keeping all my stuff in a PC or on my android app which is quite easy for me to access anytime I want and is safer.

Yes assuming they figure out what the point of the code is when converted then someone could easily gain the private key and use it.
If its just random noise maybe not but offline storage is best.

if the key is evident, it is not safe. you can only steal something that is there.

that being said, storing keys in the cloud, or any sensitive information for that matter, is an inherently bad idea. the storage is centralized; if the database is compromised, your data is compromised along with it.

there is one caveat, however, and that is encryption. if you encrypt the data yourself, you can make it unusable to anyone that doesnt have the key to it as well. note, you wont be able to stop them from getting the file, but you can stop them from accessing the file. with bitcoin, the access is more vital (there are locked wallets right now with untold fortunes). you should be practicing encryption as part of any robust cyber security scheme already ;)

i think it is perfectly safe to store your private keys in a cloud like google drive as long as
1, the key is encrypted.
2, the keys are stored in a RAR file with a password not the same as the encryption password.
3, the google account has 2fa enabled and a unique email address specific for storing the keys.

but always keep a hard copy. no way to know if google drive will stop working someday.

I think a person hacking your cloud is smart enough to find what to do with your keys. I prefer to save it in many pieces of paper and save them in safe places.

That is what i did in my private keys in my wallets of bitcoin. I put it on a piece of paper and i put it on a very safe place so i can have a comfortable life because i don't trust online storage sites like cloud storage because they have still chance to get hacked and if i will put the important files there then it is game over for me.

It's a good idea to store your private keys in the cloud, even though you camouflage the file as something normal like shopping for photos on the keys and hiding the photo in a large folder of holiday photos. Your recent or something
I think if you maintain the proper security for your cloud storage account using passwords and it is difficult to compromise with whatever you are hosting there will be safe.
If you think that if you save a private key with Google Drive and if you think Google itself may see your private key, it is wrong.

Keep in mind that google drives will close their services for next year, I think the services of all cloud services are safe, but in the end they will become very commercially fast, I do not trust the cloud because many cases are happening due to the influence of various conditions. I'd better backup data manually and more than one device.

google drive isnt closing, they are getting rid of the windows app that automatically backs up your files.

Hey guys,

Some of you might brush me off because of my newbie status on the forums. I've just got into crypto less than 6months ago, but I have a legit solution that I am thinking about building myself.

I am an iOS and Android developer, have my own startup (in Canada) and have a CISSP (so I know a lot about security, and was involved in identifying security holes for some North American Financial Institutions before my startup). I've been developing apps for the past 5 years, and have been a programmer for just over 15 years.

I have an idea that may help secure our private keys through a decentralized cloud storage. This would solve the problem of one cloud being hacked, as you would need all other cloud services being hacked as well (in and around the same time). Before I start developing the solution (thinking start in 2 weeks), I'm trying to gauge the interest of the crypto community.

Let me know what you guys think. Positive criticism is always welcome, but you can keep unjustified negativity to yourself. Thanks in advance.

Store private keys in the cloud? Um, this is a very bad idea. I mean if you know what you are doing then it could work, but not recommended generally speaking.

Cloud is also secured in some how. That concern site should be loyal full site Dropbox or one drive else you cannot be able to go with the cloud for security concerns. If you are worry about private key should not be shared means you should not use the any online wallet   first because it been shared with the online wallet provider only.

Thanks for the feedback guys. Definitely would go with reputable and secure clouds, not just random clouds. As an information security professional who's worked with implementing security for North American Banks, I can guarantee when implementing the app, that I would follow the same security measures that banks would use, or at least we advise them to use.

As I get close to finishing the project I will share more details of the implementation and the security measures put in place.

Bank accounts and services are hacked and frauded every day. Maybe security that is in the level of North American banks isn't enough.

In a cloud storage service, someone surely will have access to your file, because if the justice request them, they can fulfill the request.  What if someone from the cloud storage service reads the key and use it to move the coins, how could you prove the service did something wrong?

Better use an online wallet if you are willing to save private keys on the cloud. Or save the keys encrypted

Print your private keys on a piece of paper, put it in a sealed envelope and bury it among your personal effects with the word Imprtant written on the outside. Dont store them online. IF you ever get burgled and your paper goes missing, move your BTC to a new wallet before anyone figures out what the string is about.

Here's what you do:

Download Veracrypt.
Create an ecnrypted file store.
Mount the store and put all of your private keys into that encrypted store.
Backup the encrypted file store.
