Title: Is the price of bitcoin important?
Post by: cjmoles on May 28, 2016, 09:54:10 PM
I've noticed that there are many people who approach bitcoin as though it were some form of "get rich quick" scheme.  But, in reality, the true value of bitcoin is transmitted through its utility.  As long as an equal day's wage is exchanged for an equal day's productivity, the system will be sustainable.  Yes, early adopters were blessed with the fortunate opportunity to be "in the right place at the right time" but that was only because they were the first to recognize and understand bitcoin's utility and that "blessing" was just a side effect of the larger picture.

If bitcoin's monetary value increased without bound, then the experiment will fail.  Only when bitcoin can be exchanged with equity (labour hour for labour hour, productivity for productivity) can it be considered a success.  If bitcoin is held as an investment, and bitcoin's price continued to increase at the expense of late adopters, then wealth will centralize as opposed to distribute....

So, when we're pondering the direction we should be guiding bitcoin, should we approach it as an investment opportunity or as a vehicle that opens up freer and fairer access to the global economy and the world's resources?  Is bitcoin a "get rich quick with very little effort" opportunity or is it an opportunity to bring about social and political change by taking back control of our personal productivity?  These are questions we should be asking ourselves....

Thoughts?  Does the price of bitcoin really matter, or is bitcoin's utility where value is realized?

Of course, a stable "price" is desirable in the long run, however, it is unclear to me what a fair stable price would be. It depends on the economy and the speed at which goods/services and money are exchanged.
Consider a hypothetical example just using bitcoin as a payment for manual labor: if all work done by all humans on earth would be paid for in bitcoins, and everybody would get their wage at the end of the month, then the value of one bitcoin must be high enough such that this payment can happen using the "free bitcoins" available to employers.
Simple-minded calculation (may be off by two or three orders of magnitude): there are around 7 billion people, of which maybe half work for money. Average annual hours per worker are between 1400 and 2200, so monthly hours roughly between 120 and 190. Let's assume 150 for the sake of simplicity.
That would be 3,500,000,000 * 150 = 525,000,000,000 hours of work. If the total possible number of bitcoins (about 21,000,000) were used to pay the wages, one bitcoin would need to pay for 25,000 hours of work. Hourly wages differ considerably, of course, I'll just assume 1 Dollar for the sake of simplicity, too. This is quite a bit lower than actual wage in high-end economies, and a bit higher than actual wage in low-end economies.
Under these assumptions, the value of one bitcoin should be at least 25,000$ to be just sufficient as salary for all of earth's workers. Naturally, you'd need to consider that goods need to be bought and that people would hold savings, and that a good chunk of the 21 million bitcoins might be lost and thus not available, so the actual value would be quite a bit higher.
In reality, it is very unlikely that the world wide labor force (or any significant part of it) will ever be paid in bitcoin, let alone the goods on global markets, so I would not bet on such an outcome.

yes because it draws attention from media, and has enough vapital to actually be useful to put serious money. Further the larger the market cap, the harder it is to manipulate.

Eg lets say it goes to 10T, who has 100B laying around to just throw at BTC, I would posit a lot less actors. The old system even has problems transferring this money

why whouldn't matter? everything with utility has value so more utility higher price.
if the whole planet start to using bitcoin we would see a big pump.

Ya it matters, attracts attention of media = attention of people = more people using bitcoin = higher price = bitcoin FTW

When bitcoin first started, the price was not important at all. However, when people start to use it to replace money, hold it as asset and join mining for profit, price becomes an important factor for the participants to continue with bitcoin.

OP has pretty much said everything, but you can find something useful in being constantly paying attention to price... Accumulate more coins :D

I agree that the price of bitcoin acts as an incentive to promote participation and, in that regard, the upward  trend in price is attractive.  But, if the price was allowed to reach some form of equilibrium and it was appropriately scaled, will we be left with a system that is fair and equitable?  Or, will we be left with a lopsided system in which a minority controls the bulk of the resource again?  It's a big question, and the direction it takes along the way will ultimately be the deciding factor of whether or not the experiment is a success or failure.  It seems that the price doesn't matter as much as its utility which enables control over personal wealth and productivity.  Bitcoin is so much more valuable than its exchange rate....It could be a path to freedom for many....it just depends on the direction the world allows it to go.

...

Well, yes, to me it is obvious that price of Bitcoin is important!

If BTC goes up, you can buy more with it.  If it goes up faster than the price of gold went up slower than BTC's, well then you get more gold!  That matters!

Moves upward may wind up attracting more attention and users to BTC, which also matters.

the bitcoin price is a direct result of the limited amount of bitcoin, and for bitcoin to be used on a large scale it needs to be worth much more.

For example, china has a total of $30 trillion in savings. Right now there's about 15 million bitcoin in circulation.

If even 1% of chinese savings were converted to bitcoin, this would mean 1 bitcoin would be worth $2000.

And that's only (a fraction of) the chinese savings, the worlds savings are more like $300 trillion.

So bitcoin has to rise, a lot.

I think that by that logic, bitcoin has already failed to be what you want it to be. It's a great speculative tool, medium of exchange and for some store of wealth but the most common most use cases are dependent on its FIAT value. The reason so much bitcoin gets traded and transacted as well as mined by so many parties is because it is priced on monetary value through something as widely accepted as FIAT. It's not bad to measure bitcoin's value on money that's more widely accepted, that's what's actually happening in fact. I think that it's good to go by that principle and call bitcoin successful already. Because bitcoin doesn't need to surpass the dollar or even compete with it in order for it to be considered successful, all use is good and as long as it's used in any way it's not failing.

yes price of bitcoin is important. if I was the one who took the decision of an investment then I was the person most responsible for all the results obtained.

All wealth concentrates in a limited number of hands no matter how you try to set things up. That's just how the world works and Bitcoin wouldn't be any more or less immune to it.

I'm not super convinced it'll become a regular currency. It makes a lot more sense as a store of value to many. I for one would rather spend what's in my bank account than in my Bitcoin wallet just in case it goes up. If it gains some real traction then I struggle to see how it wouldn't continue spiraling upwards.

The price of bitcoin is important. Its value is one of the factors that drives people to use it. Some take bitcoin as an investment because of its ability to rise in value. Both the price and usability play a big role for bitcoin to stay in the mainstream. :)

there is no question in my opinion. bitcoin price determination depends on how the market acts. the higher the price of bitcoin, the greater the bitcoin users in the world market.

everyone can give or appreciate an item, the first is due judged based on whether the item has a price and appreciated . because in this century something which has no sale price or value would certainly be abandoned or discarded, not much different from humans, appreciated if he could have a little ability and usefulness to others. and the same goes also with bitcoin.

I don't really pay attention to the price as much as one would think.  I place a dollar value on my work and get paid according to that value....When I spend, I shop around looking for the best deal and make the purchase....I don't wait around for the next ticker movements before making those decisions.  So, the price isn't as important to me as being paid a fair wage for my services and receiving a fair portion in return for my wage. Of course the stability of the currency is important but being paid a fair wage for my labour and receiving an equitable return on my earnings is most important.

price of bitcoin is very much important for us. if bitcoin price goes high then we will be rich in no time. actually our total extra profit totally depends on the price. so we should not underestimate the price of bitcoin.

Title: Re: Is the price of bitcoin important?

in my opinion how much the price is, is less important than how the price changes. i mean it doesn't matter a lot if the price is $200 or $2000 what is important is that how the price reaches for example $2000

if it rises to 2K in a couple of months and because of just hype and pump it would be worthless but if it reaches 2K because of adoption and real user base increase then that is the goal and the dream.

but this will only happen over time, we can't expect it to be 100% like this today. it would take some more time and attention to reach this level.

when you say "is the price important" many things come to mind regarding this. but I think the most important thing about the bitcoin price is how it changes.
if the price change is slow, close to a stable price then that is the most desirable scenario for bitcoin price. and being most volatile, with big swings every day is the least desirable.

but in my opinion it is not important what the price is for example if it is $100 or $10,000 because it would still be bitcoin and will still be offering all its features, although low prices may cause some problems with mining and profitability.

The price of Bitcoin is really important and that is because you have to know that there are more people that is using it and you can earn some profit with it so that is nice.
But of course it is hard to know what the value will be in Bitcoin and that is the risky thing.

Title: Re: Is the price of bitcoin important?
Post by: ObscureBean on June 17, 2016, 08:29:05 AM
There is just too much risk involved with Bitcoin (in its current form) for it to be viewed as anything other than an investment. It needs to be regulated and backed by a trustworthy entity like the government (I know) before the masses will consider using it as a regular currency. If the Dollar drops in value overnight, you don't really feel it because you can still buy bread with the same amount of money in the morning but if Bitcoin drops overnight, you're screwed. If something goes wrong with the Dollar, people know who to turn to, who to blame. Nobody is really accountable if something goes wrong with Bitcoin and that's kind of scary if you're not rich and your family depends on the money you bring home.
I think that if right now Bitcoin value were to stabilize permanently, we would see a huge portion of the Bitcoin crowd suddenly lose interest and move on. Bitcoin would still probably continue to evolve but it'll be at a much much slower pace.

For me, it is both. Price also plays an important role aside from utility. It drives more awareness and people to accept and use bitcoin. If utility alone, there will be limited people to embrace the digital currency😄

If not the price then what else?? The majority of the bitcoin users don't know what is blockchain and how it works.

All they are concerned about the price. The price is the only factor which makes bitcoin attractive to the mass. If it drops to $1, then so called bitcoin lovers will also start mining altcoins and leave bitcoin to die in misery.

For me the price is the only and the most important factor.

In the first place traders do trades to make profits that's why they care for the price lol. So price does matter for them.

Also there's no such thing as exact date or time when a trades will do such buy and selling move. It's all about the "price" and the "trend".

Price of Bitcoin is indeed important because people use it because of its value now. Some traders who use bitcoin use its price as an advantage to get more money from it. Some also use bitcoin to trade for other alt-coin which will give them big amount of alt coin to hold  and sell in the future.

I agree with you.People literally look at Bitcoin as a sort of investment or the "Get Rich Quick" scheme as you have put it.I Think 70% of the Crypto holders have only one intention behind it,keep holding. The remaining 30% includes the actual users who bring justice to the innovation. You can't really blame the small players here.Even coinbase or big shots like Mike Hern has no intentions of promoting as a currency of the future but the valuable asset of the  digital world.

Probably it will make more sense to me if the value of bitcoin is not calculated on basis of fiat currencies. That would bring use to next big problem which is buying bitcoins. As long as we're privileged to buy bitcoins with fiat, there is no way we change the procedure.

Bitcoin at this stage, i think price matters, it attracts investors, innovators and developers.  Just think of this thing, will you lay your interest in a 0 value thing? Of course no.  People have this  "oh shiny" syndrome.  And of course lots are attracted to "get rich quick scheme".

The higher the value of Bitcoin, the more it catches attention.  Those people who see Bitcoin as their vessel to wealth will then be the Bitcoin  community /supporter  and will start to develop  stuff so they can utilize bitcoin for daily use and of course generates profit . Just a domino effect i guess.  But all in all Price do matter.   ..Will you choose Copper over Gold?

The price of bitcoin is really important not only for the bitcoin itself but also for altcoins because they are pretty much realated to the bitcoin, if bitcoin is up then also mostly of other altcoins are up, if bitcoin price decreases then the value of altcoins decreases a bit. For early adopters the price is useful but not much important if they plan to sell after a long time.

Most of us checks the price of an Altcoin base on the price of BTC. so yes it is important. This is so the reason why we bid on auction using 0.001BTC.
The price of BTC also dictate the price of altcoins.

It's a currency. The price is the only thing that matters, to be honest. If bitcoin tanked, I would drop it like a hot potato. There is always a bleeding edge thing with promise to invest in, if you are shrewd.

Well, would you really get rid of your USD if it crashed in price against something like AUD? Absolutely not because the goods in your country is still measured in USD and unchanged.

If merchants starts accepting BTC at face value, then the price will not matter. But currently, yes.

Well, that is really not a smart thing to do. Buy low sell high, that's the virtue of all traders. If you buy high sell low, then you probably should just quit the bitcoin community altogether.

I think it's important, but some people care way too much about the price.

Yep, the price of bitcoin is really important, that is the reason why us is earning bitcoin. Because of it's value, right? If the value of bitcoin is just like the value of other currencys, so i think its important.

Who say it isn't , then that person its plain stupid and the below example shows why bitcoin price really matters, its a daily life example

When bitcoin price was 350 USD, with 1 BTC you could buy a normal gaming computer online or offline stores
Now that the bitcoin price is 750 USD with 1 BTC you could buy an extreme gaming computer online or offline stores

That is a 400 USD difference price per 1 BTC , imagine if someone one had 100 btc that it is 40.000 USD, this amount is life changing in India for example. Thats why bitcoin price really matters.

Yes, bitcoin price really matters. Those who already have gathered and stored lots of BTC, with the current increase in the value of BTC their savings are doubled or maybe tripled in few months. Lets suppose the price of bitcoins was only few dollars, then no one would have bothered about it and it would not be so famous as it is now.

I believe bitcoins biggest utility has been unrealized. It's the novelty of the technology that's valuable. I see blockchain as the future of not only banking but also real estate and all sorts of privacy sensitive transactions or records.
Bitcoin is just the tip of the iceberg, the blockchain tech.

At this point the blockchain technology should get way more respect and support from people than it already has. But then again, the majority of the people only care about earning themselves a few bucks, and all the other is "not important" or they simply don't understand how it works and what it exactly is.

Price = Value of anything is important to draw attention of people for investment.Everyone wants to get good money as profit or wants to get rich.Bitcoin doesn't have any exception in this regard. The higher the price will go the more people will begin to know about Bitcoin.Price of Bitcoin is very important both for early investors and for bitcoin by itself for further adoption and growth.

Bitcoin price is definitely important because it is an investment.

There's really no point in investing in bitcoins if it's price would stay the same all throughout or if the price would just drop. Both the fluctuations and the increase of bitcoin's value is important for us traders because it's a way for us to make profit. And that's actually what we love about bitcoin. The price is volatile.

The price is of course important, Investor need to know about the future of bitcoin :)
Nobody want to invest in a dying currency :P

As user like me it's important also, since bitcoin has not been available worldwide as payment method I will need to convert it into my currency, if the price are on the roof I would make a good profit from my job :)

Although I would love to see the price drop so I can grab myself a cheap coins :P

Yes the price of bitcoin is so important especially to traders who earn profit with the volatility of it, if the price of bitcoin is stable it's good for us but for trader they want the dynamically  value of it.
Price is really important not only for the traders but also for the normal users who are earning bitcoin as they will prefer to sell only when price goes higher.

why whouldn't matter? everything with utility has value so more utility higher price.
if the whole planet start to using bitcoin we would see a big pump.
Ya it matters, attracts attention of media = attention of people = more people using bitcoin = higher price = bitcoin FTW

Yes, it all adds up the more the users the more the demands and the more the demands the more the price becomes higher. That is the rule of supply and demand and you have explained in a simple way. Business Logic will tell us that the price is the very reason why commodities are being traded and why people are interested in investment and many other things. Like bitcoin without the price its just useless.

Yes it is. The price of the bitcoin may be vary. But it is so very important. Because that's one of the basis for trading sites. Other trading sites don't offer more about other cryptocurrencies but Bitcoin is so broad, this cryptocurrency can be a bridge to convert your dogecoin or some other cryptocurrencies into US Dollar. Some other sites knows that Bitcoin price is so high right now. So this will cause to higher conversion bonus.

price of bitcoin is very much important for us. if bitcoin price goes high then we will be rich in no time. actually our total extra profit totally depends on the price. so we should not underestimate the price of bitcoin.
Rich? how many bitcoin you've can make you are richer when the price of bitcoin rise if only less than 50 it will not affect in your financial.

yes if the price of Bitcoin goes high we can not become rich unless we have some coins. But that price will full fill our daily expense. Yes, the price increase means we can sell that coins, and we use it for our personal use. Yes for me the price of Bitcoin is important.

if you have very few coins and if price increases means it wont make you rich, you should have enough coins with you to become rich. eventhough price matters a lot to its users that it will provide good profits if price increases.

Well it can make someone a bit richer, but if someone doesn't have enough coins, it won't make much of a difference.

Imagine that you have 10 bitcoins. If the price rises by $40, you are already $400 richer without doing anything.

Of course yes, it decides how much we will get when we convert it to fiat. If we want to convert 100$ at the current price of more than 650$ i think it is less than 0.15 btc. But if its price drops to approximately 500$ then 100$ worth of btc is 0.2. The higher the value of bitcoin, it is easier to earn some amounts.

The price of Bitcoin is very important.

If the price drops by 50% it means my spending power drops by 50%

If it drops enough, people will leave it.

Sure, if you are using some currency you should be interested in price at my opinion, it's very rare for me to see people who don't interested in price of currency.
perhaps the poor are not so smart would not be too concerned with the price of a currency, they may not know the value of their local currencies against the dollar. so I think the price would be important to those who know only the interests of the bitcoin prices

i also agree with you. i think the whole game is around the price of bitcoin. if the price of bitcoin start decreasing then no one will be able to stop it. i think people will lose their confident and they well then never like to invest in bitcoin. therefore it is more important that the price of bitcoin must stay. and remain stable.

Bitcoins price do matter because most people are involved with bitcoins as investments. If the price starts decreasing then the people will have loss. Then they will lose confident over it. Yaa so the bitcoins price do matter. I think it will have less importance for price if many people start to use it as currency.

i think there are many traders that do not care which way bitcoin is going, and only care about the change. so as long as there is a change whether it is going up or going down they are going to make a profit out of it.

but for those who are using bitcoin, and like to see it mostly as a currency the stable price with very little fluctuation is the dream.

I think I can say that they care for bitcoin price too much about the price of Bitcoin.  When will it go down, or when will it go up.  They even monitor it closely because it dictate when they will sell Bitcoin and when they will buy it.  Remember trader's motto, Buy low Sell high! So price of bitcoin really matters for them

yeah probably most people will leave because bitcoin prices are very low. but if the price is only down 50% I think people are still able to tolerate it and hold bitcoin them to rise again. a low price does not necessarily make the most bitcoin users become afraid. But still the price is very important

What does that even mean? You buy bitcoins with $, then use it as "currency" to pay a merchant, who turns around and immediately liquidates it for $?

What's the point? Bitcoin is digital gold. Someday people will realize that adoption at the consumer/merchant level is just not important. Peer-to-peer digital gold.

well, that is two totally different views about bitcoin. many only believe in bitcoin as a p2p cash so the price is not so much important as long as you are taking advantage of what bitcoin is offering you as a currency like the anonymity and cheap money transfer to any place in the world.

but also as an investor for example the price is the most important thing because you wouldn't want to buy something that swings around everyday and you lose money.
