Updated title picture, flickr's 1024 generated image seemed to be weird.

I cant just set the miner to pools like Mining Rig Rentals or Nice Hash.
Is anyone having the same issue as me?

Original firmware has some bugs that were fixed in firmware updates.

There are 3 different files, what is the difference between them?

The difference is the frequency different batches used different frequencies.   You can tell in file name: s9-20160624-650M.tar.gz  So this one is for the 650 frequency.  One that uses this is Batch 1 I believe.

Look at Batch 7 - https://enshop.bitmain.com/productDetail.htm?pid=000201607061255410704Cf0TyV70656 you will see on spec - Default Frequency: 600M .  So you would want the 600 frequency firmware s9-20160624-600M.tar.gz .

So check batch on default frequency before selecting firmware.   As always be cautious during firmware updates don't restart during or other bad things.

Any possibility to upgrade the fans to quieter ones without losing cfm or compromising performance/cooling?

At stock speeds (of batch 1 anyway) the boards are pushing their absolute limit. With a moderate underclock I believe you could swap out the crazy loud fan for a 'normal' 120x35 which would bring the S9 back to S7 levels.

It is worth noting if you do this you technically have voided warranty:
  "a. Customer removes/replaces any components by himself without receiving permission from Bitmain first;"

Don't know chances of getting caught but if honest that would void it.  I personally would not risk it on a new S9.  But if you do like dogie said underclock, and also make sure to monitor heat after and see how it does.   During summer it can get hot some places.

I have no ventilation in my garage so summer mining has to be in the house until fall, which heat isn't a problem but the noise is so I was just hoping there might be a way around the noise. Thanks for the replies

Regarding the instruction to register, what is the 'username' in the 'username.worker'? As i understand it, 'worker' can be any name i choose, right?

Username is your antpool username you used to sign up on the site with. Worker can be anything.

But i sign into antpool with an email address. Ive tried logging in with the only other username that comes out from the antpool account, but it doesnt log on successfully. Do i use that username for 'username.worker'?

Yes use that username, mine is dogie.

Hello guys! I'm quite new to bitcoin mining (also don't mind the writing mistakes pls, English is not my first language). I've bought 4 pcs Antminer S9 and on one of them I have a frustrating problem, maybe you can help or maybe you have an ideea (other than hitting it with a baseball bat!   :) )
And they started mining like 2 days ago...
In the Miner status window under ASIC I only get 2 rows of "ooo... "
In the Kernel Log I get    "Chain[J7] has 0 asic"

and
 
"Test Patten on chain[5]: FAILED!
Test Patten on chain[6]: FAILED!
Test Patten on chain[7]: FAILED!"

P.S. I have started a ticket with Bitmain, but no answer yet.
I've rebooted, reset, hard reset, reflashed with latest software version

1. Unplug modules until you find the bad one.
2. Try that module on a different controller port (shift the white ribbon cable over)
3. If no luck, RMA the board with Bitmain as there's little we can do for this.

Hello! I've performed a FW upgrade and now I see the middle row (chain 7) but I've got an x under temp and still the hash rate there is 0.
??..

And another thing (becouse I am verry lucky) I've updated the others to the latest FW version and I cannot acces one of them...
The upgrade went well, but I can't see it's IP and cannot connect to the web interface.
Mining can be frustrating sometimes.
Do you know if I can flash the antminer S9 from SD card?

Board is still dead and nothing really changed. Still proceed with RMA.


Have you tried holding down the reset button the controller? As long as the firmware update went fine, the S9 should hop back to DCHP as it was when it shipped.


Instructions for S2+ are here, although the file doesn't specifically mention the S9 its the right technique at least. If you can find an s9.img then those are the instructions you need.

Has anyone had luck with knocking the noise level down on these beasts?
I just ordered the latest 14th batch. and will be running it in an apartment with free power, so noise is somewhat a concern.
Additional quitter fans is possible, spreading the boards on in a bigger case maybe with more fans etc.

been searching around, having a heck of a time though.

Spreading the boards out and using a blower such as this http://www.globalindustrial.com/p/hvac/blowers/crossflow/crossflow-blower-14-wheel instead of fans is the only solution to noise that I can think of. Might also need to use a couple small 4-pin fans tied to the controller so it still sees fans.

thank you for your reply. I talked to Bitmain and they said I should RMA the controller and The whole machine with the deffective hash board (not just the hash board as you would expect..)
Anyway there is no SD slot on the controller board, just the hole in the front cover (maybe for esthetic reasons... it looks really pretty though :) )
So back to China it is then! It's gonna be so much fun ( I just can't wait to deal again with customs and shipping etc )

My long term feedback to Bitmain was always about cooling and tbh they've already achieved near the best they can given their board and chip structure. I don't know how else you can improve it without - as NotFuzzyWarm - suggests, dismantling stuff.

That's what I am gathering.
I like the fact that they stick with the same form factor, but feel they are getting thing's a little tight.
Who knows maybe having it that tight is best for cooling?
Maybe a new gen with a bit less power, less noise, but not as pricey as their latest home miner. Hmm

It is. If you think of gaps like a hollow pipe, the air closest to the wall is doing your cooling but then there's a core of air which contributes very little and passes though. The more space you have the more of these deadspots you get. This was evidence on the V1 ASICMiner Tube / Prisma which would waste a lot of their airflow.

Hello, I have a question about the Power supply for a S9 (batch 22). If I only have 220V in my house, is it okey if I just use another PSU, different than the one recommended by Bitmain, that can be used with 110V? If thats the case, do you have any recomendation? Thanks :)

EVGA 1600, or a 1k and 750, really any pc power supply, but realize you need 400-600 per board, so you'll want buffer, and one board can't have more than one psu.
I run mine with 2 boards on a EVGA 1300, and the third board runs on a 750 watt psu.

Ditto to that. I was just looking for a quiet ATX supply to run an undervolted s7 space heater and was rather distressed to see that when you actually look at the specs for the ATX suppies:
1. Not enough 6-pin PCIe connectors. Is typically only 6 on a supply >1200w
2. Current per-rail is marginal at best, typically a couple @30A and the rest are 20A
3. Remember - a PC style supply wattage ratting is for ALL of its outputs together. The 3.3 and 5v portions account for between 150-200w of that rating so don't count on that all being available on the 12v rails.

Frankly, if you are going to spend >$300 on a PSU(s) - get Bitmain's APW5. Will run a s9 on 110v just fine.

if you can help a newbie... I currently have 1 antminer s9 11.85th, i can control the fan speed and frequency. i want to add more s9's, but i read that the new firmware for the new s9's has fan and frequency issue.

There are no fan ""issues""
its all auto tune now, so you can't adjust the setup/speeds

Thats the issue im talking about, cant control the fan and frequency. many complain of high heat. if im gonna buy more s9 i need to know which s9 as this autotune. because i need to control the fan speed and frequency. because its hot in our country. ive been reading the forum about the s9. but i cant find info on which miners has this autotune.

Stick with 11.85th b10 S9 secondhand. Ask about what firmware they are using. All new S9's released from about a month ago have the new auto tune firmware. The old firmware is not available anymore so once you update to the new auto tune firmware there's no going back.

You could try them. But as stated its entirely at your own risk. I assume the 11.85Th firmware listed there is the original firmware my S9 is running now. But I couldn't tell you for certain. All that's listed on my S9 Info page is "File System Version-Mon Jul 11 18:23:27 CST 2016".

My 11TH has the same version, the thing about this version, its not very stable and smooth when hashing, its really erratic, the hashrate on antpool using this miner goes up and down alot. I also read the new firmwares are more stable in hashing on antpool, too bad for us, I tried to flash it to autotune but its the fan speed that bother me most. I really need to underclock the miner at 12noon here in the philippines. temperature soars up to 100 degrees. i dont like that, we know it shortens the lifespan of the miner. i want to be able to reach the halving in 2020.. hehe..

That's why bought it secondhand as it had the original firmware with fan adjustment. The newest auto tune works well from what I've read and keep the chips below 100c but it would be noisy. I've heavily underclocked mine down to 4.2Th and it's really nice and quiet. Anyway good luck with Antpoo....I mean Antpool (probably the worst pool going).

Since a family member of my wants to start mining witch ASIC machines(BTC) i want some information about it.

1. The bitmain ASIC miners, are they only for antpool mining?
2. I have used in the early years (now about 3-5 years ago) bfgminer, can this be used to for the ASIC miners? Since everything here is stand-alone mining!
3. Is it still worth mining now we are 120+ days further, and if buying 2 asic miners! will it be profitable? Using for now free electricety and Internet!!

No. You can mine at whatever pool you prefer.
These miners have built-in controller with Bitmain's fork of cgminer.

Hi sorry I know its quite late for this post but is it possible to disconnect from router after setup and move the miner elsewhere where I can plug the Ethernet in the back of a pc in another room?

you connect miner through pc? antminer need ethernet cable that connect to internet, no need pc to make it work except for setting pool

my latest S9 just lost a board in other words it was working fine for about 24 hours then i made a psu change and it just stoped hashing. two interesting details, one, the miner detects the board but no its not hashing at all GH/S(RT) shows 0000, two, if i connect that particular board by itself it does hash, but only by itself.

And here I thought it was just me. Every time I attempt to download the firmware update from earlier this year I get an error message. Anyone know how to get the files directly from bitman?

People say no but when I change my browser adress on my autotune S9 from http://192.168.1.102/cgi-bin/minerConfiguration.cgi to http://192.168.1.102/cgi-bin/minerAdvanced.cgi  I do get a secret page where I can change my frequency.

In case I want to underclock I would not worry too much and could try the 550 setting..

But If I would like to overclock to 675 frequency, and I don't like the heat and noise it creates, how do I change it back to the original autotune setting?

Anyone tried to overclock using this trick of the hidden advanced page , and how did it work out ? And how did you get back to the autotune mode?

I tried this on my new ones (order oct del dec) and it did not work, I could not find such a page, even loaded an img of flash and tries to dos list directory's, could not see anything on my units :-/

Hi all -

Received a batch of 14TH/sec miners recently - had a few observations:

1)  Fewer chips on one side of the board.  Chips running at 687Mhz, so suspect they hit a power limit.
2)  Most came shipped with the July 2017 firmware, not the August 2017 release - although a few have a November 2017 release
3)  I bricked one while doing firmware upgrades - got distracted, and somehow managed to open two web pages into the same box and managed to start the firmware upgrade twice.
4)  Much to my surprise, some of the APW++ (the cheaper $105 units) are temperature sensitive.  I'm cooling with outdoor air now, and some would not power up miners until they were warmed up.  Had a few start at 40F, more at 50F, and a couple that required 60F+ to boot up a miner.

Question:  I have a 32GB FAT32 SD card, and tried unpacking the s9_fix_upgrade.tar.gz files to it and power cycling, but no joy.  The unit remains unpingable.  Reset has no effect either.  Any suggestions?  Bitmain Parts does shows the controller as out-of-stock.

When using two power supplies, just make sure that each hash cards is powered by the same one.  e.g.  Hash card 1 & controller by power supply 1, hash card 2 & 3 by power supply 2.  Do NOT mix power supplies on a hash card.

Not their APWs... the paper clip trick generally only applies to generic PC power supplies, not specialty ones.

Only Bitmain knows that.  Watch their twitter feed, sometimes they give a few hours notice.

Holy SCHNIKES!  The secret frequency page URL is true!  I just added "/cgi-bin/minerAdvanced.cgi " after my s9s IP address.

However you get a pop-up warning.  Hence, my question is... what does that "It will take about 3 hours on search frequency before mining!  Are you sure?" I have never seen this before.

This is my 1st brand new factory sent Antminer - on any of the half-dozen used ones I have had, I understandably never had such issues, due to others having already over/underclocked.

I can get to the advanced settings page but I don't want to touch it as there's no "Auto" in the drop down list to change it back to.
My frequency in the drop down list is set at 550.00M and with that setting the boards themselves are at 631.95, 639.50 & 640.36 freq will all hashing at about 4.6 Th/s.
